Blackpool v Sunderland Official Matchday Thread 01.01.23

If I might help

The time for change is long overdue

Look at Boris Liar
Look at Star Gazing Liz Trussed

Get rid of Apple Juice because he can’t recruit, can’t manage and is plain dim at this level

Beat Hull who got back into the game when Thorniley got sent off.
Draw against Sheff Utd, Carey's slip was the difference
Beat Sunderland, Sony over complicated the attack should have got a shot off when winning 1-0 makes it 2 its a lot easier.
Yeh could have been 7

Why can't people look at the positives for a change?
Ufortunately because these 'might haves' of yours didn't happen.

I did a thread a few days back "fine lines" where I covered all the aspects you described.
Yeh, we could have been battered today however if Sony gets his shot off 1st half when they were rattled it could have been a different kettle of fish but that's football.
I'm under no illusion whatsoever that we're in a relegation scrap but at 3.40pm this afternoon we were in 20th!!
We haven't been cut adrift at the bottom and no one can tell me that getting rid of Appleton will guarantee survival.
As I've said before in other threads this transfer window will make of break us this season.
I don’t disagree mate

That’s bollocks, beaten at the near post when he is the last line of defence and the striker has the whole net to aim at is not the keepers fault. Maxwell beaten with a slow header just to his left today that was shit goalkeeping
you need to have a look at both goals again. Clearly you strongly prefer Grimshaw over Maxwell and that clearly has blinded you to properly assess both goals. Stewarts goal was far from being a slow header, in fact that comment is bollocks. And Grimshaw never actually came off his line in midweek making it much easier for their forward.

Clearly you have never played in nets.

But how does changing the manager give players quality they obviously do not possess? The space in the middle is down to our best defensive midfield players are never available due to injury, but I suppose that is the managers fault too?
Better coaching, working on positioning and movement etc.

Goalkeeper is not a position we are struggling in...if we go down it wont be down to the goalkeepers who are both proficient but not top drawer...not much between them and they have differing qualities. Maxwell is a scapegoat but has done very little wrong

And replace him with who? Seriously, who is available, affordable and would come to us and do a better job right now?

For me, we’re missing key players. People seem to forget how poor we were at the beginning of last season until we got Gabriel/Sterling instead of relying on Connolly out of position. It made a world of difference having actual right backs. Poor Grant Ward had to play there for 2 games!

Then we never replaced Keogh at centre back. We’ve lost leadership and a good experienced CB as well as another man so we’ve not had to play Kenny Dougall and Husband there.

Keshi Anderson has his critics but again, maybe people are forgetting what a huge player he was last year and Appleton has had him for a total of about 20 mins all season.

This is all without mentioning that we sold our best player (Bowler) and didn’t have time to replace him. Even if we saw it coming, it’s not as though Appleton is in charge of transfers..

I feel that Appleton needs a chance with another transfer window behind him and players back from injuries then we can judge him properly.

Yes, he makes some questionable decisions - why we didn’t refresh an obviously tired midfield before it was too late? Why did he bring Beesley on at right wing when CJ’s pace was always an outlet/threat on the counter?

He dropped Yates today and people kicked off - his replacement scored. Yates has been out of sorts (and admittedly position) for weeks. His position wasn’t a problem when he scored 6 goals in 4 games.

There’s not much between Grimmy and Maxwell and the former had a poor game against Sheff U.

I really don’t think people screaming Appleton out and sacked in the morning during the game help. It creates a negative atmosphere and the players are scared they’re next. They are too scared to give the ball away so opt to go back to the keeper or an easy ball instead of the right ball.

I really don’t care if Appleton stays or not. What does bother me is people who would rather focus on their disdain for the manager rather than their love for the team.

If Sadler wants him gone, he’ll be gone. Until that moment comes, I’ll support the team.

td53 said it best, ‘Appleton is just some c..t on the touchline’.

The players need our support, they are working their arses off and Jan transfer window is make or break for our season.

Assessment of today.
I thought our first half performance was several notches up from what we've seen lately, even in the draws we've got. We looked positive, the attacking players were linking up really well and it's the kind of performance that could yet get us out of trouble. It gave me (and still gives me) cause for hope this season. Unfortunately, old habits crept back in in the second half and we were hanging on for a good 25 minutes, during which Sunderland could and should have scored a few.

When defending, we have a tendency to allow the player in possession to run way too far without making a challenge. It happened several times today and the worry for me is we aren't learning. We did the same thing when McAtee got the ball for Sheff Utd, and you'd think that knowing he ran nearly the full length of the pitch and scored, that we'd actually do something about it today. But no. We were very lucky that one of those runs didn't result in a goal. Put a foot in, foul them (like they constantly do to us without getting booked), just don't let them run so far.

I also think part of our problem with red cards is that our midfield provides very little protection for the defence. Carey and Patino are good players but positionally they're all over the place. Sunderland's dominance in the second half diminished significantly when Dougall came on because he's experienced and knows where to be. We must sign an experienced holding midfielder this month, it's essential.

Poveda is a very good player. I've no idea why he hasn't been playing, but if we're to stand any chance of staying up, he is a player that needs to be on the pitch. Excellent performance from him, I hope he can keep that up. You can tell why he's been involved in the England youth setup.

Overall despite the lack of wins, I'm quite positive about our chances and the reason is that I don't think it would take drastic changes to the team for us to stay up. Even a couple of good players in key positions (especially midfield) would give us a good chance I think. If it's true that Bowler is back, then having him and Poveda in the same side would take some stopping. Sunderland are imo a top six team and they struggled to contain Poveda today - imagine having to worry about Bowler too.

Sorry for the positive post, but I found today encouraging purely because I saw a performance in the first half that previously I wasn't sure we were still capable of. I'm fairly certain Appleton won't be sacked, but I still think if Bowler comes back and one or two others come in in key positions we'll stay up with or without him in charge. Our players still have that same attitude and work ethic that got us into this league. It's up to the board and recruitment team now but it's definitely within our means to do it. None of this we can't compete crap - we can and should be able to attract the necessary players.

A common sense view which I fully agree with. The constant calling of MA does not make sense. If players come in, then the board are backing him & he is more than capable of turning this around. Bowler looks to be on the way, Morgan Rogers could follow, if a strong midfielder for this level is
also secured with an experienced centre back things will improve.

You might as well throw Messi in there. History should tell you not to get too excited especially a January transfer window.

On here there are some who take an unbalanced positive view and try to ignore why we are doing so poorly and may well be relegated and there are other doom and gloom merchants who can see nothing positive to say.

The truth of course is somewhere between the two but clearly looking at our results and league position the balance leans towards more negatives than positives.

So when things are going badly supporters become critical and disillusioned and some lash out in all directions .

What is needed is constructive criticism not critics just lashing out destructively in all directions but accurately identifying the shortcomings at the club in both player strength and management and producing the plans to resolve the problems to turn things round. Is there enough of both wisdom and also money available at the club to turn the club around.

We must hope so but only time will tell.

Beesley on the wing. Tactical bang everage. Honestly we started going backwards in the summer….

Was in the South right in front, Wright pulled out no foul and Poveda got up smirking. Didn't complain .
watch the replay from the west, caught his foot. Poveda was an ironic grimace over the booking. However, it's all about opinions now it's over, booking was given and nothing will change it.

Cut out all the defensive lapses this season, been more clinical in front of goal, goalies saved every shot we'd be top of the league, funny old game

Rubbish. For one there are little positives. But for balance Poveda has been excellent, Patino worked hard, Maxwell had a good game. Defence generally have been ok apart from Connolly. Madine doing more than a striker like that needs to be doing such as chasing down.

None of the above alters the fact the team is so lightweight, unbalanced and gets battered for long periods of matches which is why we are second bottom.
It's not rubbish at all. You mention some positives when prompted to do so.

Good post. Positive signs but some glaring unaddressed weaknesses. Not all can be remedied by signings, some of it is coaching and decision making. So it's tricky.
