Bolton v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 11.11.23

Hi, would anyone be able to swap a lower tier ticket for my upper tier ticket (area 4) for Bolton on Saturday. It would be much appreciated if someone could

Last time I saw us win there was 30th September 1967, a 2-1 away win . 2 fantastic goals from Graham Oates and Tony Green. As I recall , a very lively afternoon in the unsegregated Lever End .

I had a lump of coal hit me on the head after Graham Oates scored. Never been the same since hence my username.

Another lively session was in 1970 when we won 2-0.
We won 3-0 in 1976. In the open end for that one.

Waste of time if both Dougall and Norburn are missing. That midfield won't be good enough.

I am going though so will remain as optimistic as I can be.

Tony Green what a player👍 I remember chanting Tony Green, Tony Green for about half hour sessions we just loved him❤️
And a lovely guy too. I wrote him a letter when he broke his leg and wished him a speedy and full recovery. He replied in a very personal kind of way.

AM i reading that right. the toughsheet stadium. how many names has that place had. though it could be toughs..t for someone come 5.pm.

Excuses are coming out early from our lot. Jones and Morley picked up injuries last night and now it's rumoured that both our WBs - Williams and Cogley - may not be able to play either, which isn't good news for a team that likes to play wide. We knew Johnstone is out for the season and Dempsey is still recovering from a fractured vertebra but losing the WBs is big news. Or psychological disinformation. We do have a young lad Matheson who is trying to break into the team and provides cover for Cogley and at a push we could wheel out Iredale to play on the left but it's far from ideal against tough opposition.
We had a spell with 6 first choice players out 2 months ago and it was a nightmare so we could really do without that again now as we have such a small squad. If it is disinformation I'm sure Critchley will see through it though.

Management team happy to change it every season if we are offered an improved sponsorship deal. All over the money our owners. They raised £5 million from a bond issue and it was all invested in infrastructure and facilities - nowt on the pitch. They work the stadium asset with concerts and events like Pink launching her tour there in the summer. Season tickets are cheap but they've sold over 16.5k of them. Fans obviously want to see the money in the squad but this lot are canny and there's no way we're going down the financial ruin road again.

FWIW we like the Tough Shit Stadium. They're slowly improving it - although the pasty stand caught fire last week....

I'm pretty sure you'll win. I think we have play-off ability but it's still developing. I think you lot are pretty well organised. You may get automatic and you may not. But you'll be well up there this season.

I wish I was confident of that but I'm not. Our team is also still developing and trying to play high quality football that they can only manage for parts of a game so far. We have limitations in that we have a small squad, partially due to working with a tightly controlled budget and partially due to Evatt only being interested in affordable players "with the right personality and fit" - we're still a long way from the finished product. That said I have confidence in the players we currently have providing they perform as well as I know they can, but occasionally they put in a lacklustre performance so it all depends on whether or not they're on their game on Saturday.

Sounds like every team in this division. Oxford are 2nd and looked shite 2nd half against us at their gaff

There are no stand out teams and everyone can beat each other. It's all about who is the most consistent and sadly that is something we are shit at.

Consistent results often means a settled team.

In the words of Mourinho, if I speak I’m in big trouble…

Bolton v Wigan is a derby so probably police advice.
You're probably right as Wigan fans kicked off in Westhoughton after they beat us earlier this season.
We made a huge mistake when we - along with other clubs - voted to allow Wigan to join the FL back in the 1978, little knowing that two decades later, they'd be bought by JJB Sports' Bolton-hating racist Whelan who poured money in and engendered a new generation of supporters with a massive chip on their shoulder, jealous of our honours and success. We hardly noticed them for most of our existence. Think Fleetwood.
On the day we were due to be liquidated, when Anderson had run us into the ground and we'd sold off players and assets and there was no hope left, Wigan fans travelled to our stadium and held a celebratory picnic on the grass outside.
In the fire sale, they'd bought our training ground at Euxton for peanuts, a few of our players and now the f****** vultures came to dance on our grave.
They were gutted when we were saved a couple of hours before the deadline. Sadly, Bury didn't make it.

As a club, we're trying to move away from old school rivalries, focusing instead on our own development as a community and family-friendly club although despite handing out over 50 lifetime bans to fans who cause trouble, we still have idiots who are too stupid to realise they damage the club when they get involved.

What do you think of your team ATM?
Notice a lot of folk are raving about Dembele and obviously we know about the quality of Rhodes and Lavery, but are there areas you think could be improved upon or players you think should be getting more starts?

Didn't they attack a supermarket?

Just realised how long it is since we last played you - 2019 wasn't it?
None of our that team that day are still with us - in fact our evolution under Evatt has seen a lot of players come and go as when he arrived we were still under embargo and he assembled a team of non-league and out of contract freebies so they were all given short term contracts. We signed our captain Rico Santos from Barnet in late 2020 - he'll be key in pocketing Rhodes and Lavery on Saturday - or not - but he's a 6'6" beast at the back with pace. Every year since Evatt arrived has seen ruthless activity in the transfer market and even last season's team has changed dramatically
Gone are Afolayan, MJ Williams, Bakayoka and Kieran Lee and we also had to replace goalie Trafford (on loan from City, now at Burnley) and RWB Bradley (on loan from Liverpool) and brought in Baxter in goal (so far so good) and RWB Dacres-Cogley from Tranmere (also doing well) as part of the drive to wean ourselves off developing young players for other clubs. We have just one loanee this season - Maghoma from Brentford and although he hasn't played a lot yet has good feet and movement from what we've seen. George Thomason continues to develop as a midfield battler but is a bit overenthusiastic at times and managed to pick up yellows in seven consecutive games leading to a suspension a few weeks back. We are slightly less ponderous and shot shy in front of goal than we were last season but there is still the occasional overelaborate faffing about at times. Dion Charles continues to score but his usual partner Adeboyejo isn't really knocking them in yet and there are questions over the other strikers, notably Nlundulu who can't buy a goal although he works very hard. We also have a couple of old strikers who have quality but not the energy they once had - Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Cameron Jerome although he's being groomed for a coaching role. Evatt tends to start Charles and Adeboyejo and sub them both after 60 minutes or so or when their legs drop off, whichever happens first.
After a spell where we had a bunch of injuries simultaneously - not good for a squad with only 18 registered senior players + goalies - more players are becoming available again. Apart from the long term injuries, only Kyle Dempsey is a doubt having played every game in that short-handed spell with what turned out to be a fractured vertebra so he's been rested. That said, we picked up 2 confirmed and 2 suspected injuries to first choice players on Tuesday.
The players we have now are generally good on the ball but we try to play like City/Barca but with L1 standard players so at times it's wonderful football and at others it's a nightmare - we tend to have feast and famine spells in games - so it's very stressful being a Wanderers fan these days even though we're doing quite well - we just don't know what to expect.

Come on - tell me your thoughts on the current Blackpool team :)

can't make this one but will watch on tv. Can't remember when i last didn't go to Bolton.

The omens are not good.
Evatt won the dreaded "manager of the month" which is usually the kiss of death and the ref is Ben Toner who has history with us - he's sent Evatt off a couple of times when he kicked off over some really bad decisions. Toner also reffed the Pizza Cup final and gave no punishment to a couple of season-ending assaults on our players, the worst of which was on Eoin Toal. Haven't got the video of it but it was very similar to this one by Dino Maamria, the Burton manager:

It's hard to tell you what the team will be because he never selects the same 11, win or lose ! We all know what we'd like it to be but it won't be that. I just hope that Critchley learns his lesson from the gutless performance that we put in at PNE in the season that he fucked off to Villa. Bolton away matters to us and we demand a performance this time ! I can't make this one but my son is leaving London at 5.30 to give it you lot, large !

Welcome to the board by the way !

Cheers. TBF I've seen various teams that folk want but without any detailed knowledge about who is good/bad at what, it's impossible to understand other than what I've seen of you this season which is basically game highlights. I know what Rhodes and Lavery can do, a bit about Dembele's interesting career and a bit about CJ Hamilton, Husband, Pennington and Norburn but the rest of your midfield and defence is a bit of a mystery to me - but I guess I'll find out tomorrow :)

We don't know who will play either:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Wanderers are still waiting to see which personnel will be available for Saturday’s League One clash with Blackpool.

Tuesday night’s victory at Shrewsbury took its toll on the squad and Ian Evatt admitted they have had a “busy treatment room”.

Evatt is hopeful those who are doubts will be able to train on Friday but does not want to leave any calls until the very last minute.

“We have definitely had some bangs and bruises from Tuesday,” said the Bolton boss.

“It was a brutal, physical game and we need to give the lads an extra day to help them recover and then see where we are at. There is certainly a busy treatment room this morning.

“We are hopeful that they will all manage to be OK. There are one or two who are slightly worse than others and we need them to improve tonight to be able to train (on Friday).

“They have to train on Fridays, there is no taking it to Saturday and seeing. If you are not fit for Friday, you don’t play on Saturdays. We will see how a couple of them settle overnight, we are hopeful that they will.

“They have obviously taken home the right machinery and Matt Barrass has been working his magic with his team. Fingers crossed, they will be OK.”

Gethin Jones limped off with an ankle problem early in the second half at Shrewsbury and was replaced by Will Forrester.

Aaron Morley, who scored his third goal of the campaign at Croud Meadow, also received a knock late in the game.

West Brom loanee Zac Ashworth has trained ahead of the visit of the Seasiders. The versatile defender has spent the past month on the sidelines.

Meanwhile, Kyle Dempsey is not expected to return to the first-team picture until after the international break.

The midfielder has been recovering from a back issue and also celebrated the birth of his son – Jett Reuben Dempsey – with his partner Olivia earlier this week."

If Jones is out and the WBs aren't injured as rumoured, my guess would be:

Baxter

Forrester Santos Toal

Dacres-Cogley Sheehan Thomason Maghoma Williams

Charles Adeboyejo

...with Sheehan playing slightly deeper as a 4, Thomason and Maghoma alternating as a 10, and both strikers being subbed around 60 to 65 minutes (Nlundulu and JDB)

Carlos Mendes Gomes may get a look in but as he's coming back from injury will probably not start. If the WBs are injured I'm hoping young Matheson gets a chance - he's shown enough to be challenging for a start anyway. Iredale likely cover for Williams, but he's slower and more defensive.

The Wanderers "Match Pack":

Thought it might interest you to see how the club is run these days. As mentioned elsewhere the owners have gone cards in on promoting community, family engagement, inclusiveness and the general removal of dickheads so it's very commercial and pretty damn woke - which I like.
It starts with
"Wanderers welcome Blackpool to the Toughsheet Community Stadium on Saturday 11th November for what is set to be an exciting Sky Bet League One clash. With a bumper crowd of over 23,000 expected, here's all you need to know to make the most of your matchday at Bolton Wanderers: "
...and then straight into:

Buying remaining tickets (at full whack if you haven't pre purchased or got a ST)
Act of Remembrance ceremony pre-match (2.45)
"One Wanderers Family" - including hotline for busting dickheads and reporting abusive behaviour to the police
Relaunch of the North Stand Gaming Station with PlayStation 5’s complete with the new EA Sports FC24 game and Philips Evnia gaming TVs (big screens)
Christmas at the Club Shop - buy your Wanderers Xmas jumpers etc..
Fan Zone (home fans only) showing Wolves v Spuds on big screens from 12.45 (bars & shops)
Madri pre-order beer terminals in 3 areas to avoid HT queues
Wellbeing hub with refreshments and dedicated kids areas with games and activities
Stadium hotel open for meals, drinks etc - also showing Wolves v Spuds
Wanderers TV passes
Equality Diversity and Inclusion - including how to report discrimination, harassment, victimisation or bullying
Car Parking including consideration for locals
Pre-purchase match programmes

It's a pretty slick commercial operation thanks to Sharon these days - arrive early, bring the kids, spend more :)
Couldn't be further away from Burnden or Bloomfield Rd in the old days.
