Brighton v Blackpool Official Matchday FA Cup Thread 23.01.21

Some players looked dead on their feet towards the end, extra time could have done us a lot of damage. A 2-1 defeat at a premier league side isn't the worst result.

I see a problem with seeking to get the next two games postponed. I reckon there are more positive tests to come all round the division and there is a realistic scenario we could end up two games behind by next Saturday and called off again due to yet more positive tests. It's all a bit of a mess at the moment.

Questions will be asked of everything we've done. It's the process of football. You try something, you see how it goes, it works, it doesn't. That applies to every team.

I don't really understand what people expect when we turn up at a Prem club with 4 kids who've never played league football. 2 players who've been told they can leave, a midfield who've never started together, a central defensive pair who've never started together and no replacements on the bench for the players in the starting Xl whose fitness is always going to be a question given their lack of game time.

From the team sheet onwards, that was never going to be easy. It was never going to be easy with the best team, let alone the reserves.

We had no answer to their high press, we kept getting caught at the back. But we had Thorniley and Marvin there. We had no Dougall, no Viking, No CJ. No Ballard, No Ward. All of which would have been far more comfortable playing against the high press, moving the ball or using pace to break against their style.

Spot on.

I just said on twitter to someone that we've got better things to worry about than whether a scratch team of players, some of which haven't played a game for months can beat a Prem side who just brought better players on as the game went on. As we tired, they brought on class, we had no fresh legs for the midfield and no alternative to big Gaz.

We need to worry about whether the first XI can find a way to break down stubborn league one sides, not pick the bones out of this one as it's literally pointless. They did ok, we didn't show as well as we could but we had half the ** best players missing! That's it. The end.
Yep agree. Where as it wasn't ideal that he brought Madine off, he [and Yates] had put a shift in. The important game is tuesday and we need Madineto be as fresh as possible for that game. So yep, totally understand the decision.

Yes, I complained about that in the blog, but conceded he was probably being pragmatic as really, what choice does he have at the moment?

I'll be honest, I'd like to have seen one of our kids instead of someone else kid running about pointlessly for the experience, but then that's also probably not very practical and it's likely Holmes is much further behind Simms in terms of his readiness for such an experience.

You said
"A strange selection. Affected by injuries and covid?"
There's a big ?
Given the enforced changes I think the team can take credit for the scoreline albeit against a very average Prem team.. There were however some needless mistakes in the defensive zone that would have been punished by a better team. That said there were also some very good performances and I have to say that Thornley looked much better than I was expecting given all the negative press. Need more defensive cover if he is shipped out.

Yes but away on their big pitch is a bit different to playing on a smaller on in Chorley. I think we would have done a bit better at home also especially with the first team if possible.
Brightons pitch is smaller than Bloomfield Rd

Blackpool 112 x 74
Brighton 105 x 69

Questions need asking of both the recruitment and coaching team. It's been a poor season so far. Too many mistakes all round, that's why we sit 16th out of 24.
Just another point to keep you updated about. There's a salary cap this season.
If you divide £2.5m by the squad size of 22 that works out at about £2.2k pw.
When you are re-building a squad you can't bring in 22 x £5k+ pw players. You have to take a "punt" on a few and you won't win them all.
There's no problem with attitude and application but some are possibly not what we hoped for ability wise.
They won't all work out and I'm sorry that they all don't meet your exacting standards.
I'm sure Simon Sadler and Neil Critchley will PM you and apologise for not doing better.

As things stand I wouldn't ship him out unless we have a replacement lined up.

I'm well aware of the implications of the salary cap and budgets, I spent half my working life dealing with budgetary control. I think it's you that should apologise for breathing. Please feel free to stop any time you like. Your condescending nature won't be missed.
Now where's the ignore button.

Hopefully it's 62 years and counting just a few remaining months. I wouldn't trust you with BUDGIE control.

You're such an amiable person.
Wishing that on anyone in the middle of this pandemic is beyond despicable.
Sleep well tonight and I actually hope you wake up in the morning and think about what you have just posted.

Still it would be nice if that punt was some players from our youth set up, I think we would be more forgiving

You’re a disgrace to this entire board.

Point proven.
They're a Premier League side who could have probably stepped it up a gear had they needed to, especially in the second half.
What makes you think they were beatable? If it wasn't for a couple of Maxwell saves and them missing good chances they could have put 5 past us.

The reason we played that formation was down to the amount of players we had missing, the late disruption to the side caused the totally understandable lack of cohesion we had.
The usual driving force from midfield, Dougall and Ward, weren't available. And we're missing our best player.

On a good day, with a full strength team and luck on our side, we may have stood a chance of beating them, such is the beauty of the FA Cup.

I think a reality check is needed for a few people.
to be honest brighton are rank average, no doubt they have some very good players but you can see why they are near the bottom of the PL. they dont really have much of a cutting edge. like you say a full strength pool side would have run them much closer on the stats front and could have welll edged the game. Doudal and ward or even ward or dougall plus virtue or Robson would have been a different proposition. Their defence looked like it makes errors, a bit more bite in midfield and we might have put them under a lot more pressure.

Unfortunately, from 60 minutes he tired, but he was doing Virtue‘s job too. Not the quickest and not great on the ball, his job is pure holding. Same with Robson. To be clear, Williams would not get anywhere near a full strength team, but today, I saw his performance differently.

I 100% agree we need another midfielder of the attacking variety.

Need to let go Virtue, Sarkic and let Bez go on loan for experience.
I have said all along that Virtue isnt good enough because he is WAY WAY too slow...today proved that and I really dont rate Williams either. Sarkic should be sent out/ released as he is miles off the standard required.

62, you really need to reflect on your comments. We all have different opinions, but you are in a minority of 1 in how you go about expressing yours. We are all BFC fans and sometimes we agree to disagree, but your comments tonight are exceptional even for you.

I sincerely hope you don’t mean what you type.
Incitement brings out the worst in me.

Nope ours is smaller you have measured yards for us and meters for them. I even looked on Google maps and measured and its definitely smaller.

Im fact on Google maps, well earth, it suggests the disparity is much bigger than them numbers suggest below. But it could have changed but unlikely.

102.4 x 67.7 metres - bloomfield road

105 by 68 metres - Ammex

Those are from wiki so may not be accurate. Maybe Brighton expanded further when they realised it benefits their style.

With many first team players not available the players and critch should be congratulated for doing so well against this sort of opposition

Brighton play in the richest and best league in the world

Shame. Should be prestige when a 4yh ed FA cup game, but it was a reserve team fixture. We had about 4 starters from our best 11 and less for them.

What if the opposition have problems? Should we get it postponed until they can also fulfill the fixture with their strongest team? All teams will get injuries and suspensions over the course of the season so you win some, you lose some, it's part and parcel of a season.
We don't know what the situation is with the COVID outbreak but it would be foolhardy to expose the players to possible further infections. Any other place of work would be shut down for two weeks. It's not about getting any advantage over the opposition.

We never saw VAR though

I thought we did alright especially with “big Gaz”
Simms was kicked about and he will have to get use to that
Maxie was brilliant
I’m worried about the league as we have too many now out
Signings are defo required

After failing to make it as a copper, you ended up in the Borough Planning Dept during the Oyston years.
Enough said.

Brighton’s second goal was unbelievably lucky, there was a crowd of players in front of him when he took the shot, it could have hit any one of them and gone anywhere but the goal.
