Bristol goal

I've seen quite a few blaming Connolly but looked to be the CB fault to me. He was their striker, not left sided player. The CB was with him, didn't need to go fwd as our other CB was there and free. The striker drifted back a bit and our CB who was tight with him, left him by going fwd and then calling for an offside once he had lost him.

Something for them to work on in training, need to persist with the same back four so they can develop some understanding.
If we do sign a good right back maybe we then move Connolly across to centre back and put Keogh on the bench.

think you make a valid point but for me it was still a case of Martin dropping wider and Connolly didn't have anyone to mark so he should have picked Martin up.

I've only seen the highlights but we looked like we defended well apart from the goal where Martin lost his marker and scored. We got a foot in and blocked a few. On a positive note the run by Bowler and the ball from Anderson to him was superb. Great finish by Lavery.
Get Kenny back fit ratting about and breaking up play and we should do ok.

Husband was on Martin and let him go. Looked like he was marginally offside when the ball was played in.

The only doubt is if Keogh's left foot is playing Martin onside. It's a marginal call but given how poor all 3 officials were, unsurprising they gave it Bristol's way.
It was crap all round- 4 City players to 3 defenders in the danger area, who is the awol? Free header back post and that was Connolly's man. I don't expect a L sided CB to be covering a player in the RB position, you'll get murdered doing that.

Far far too easy for them to score that.

In contrast Lavery earned his goal and the defenders tried to stop it.

that freeze frame shows at least one if not both of our players in the wrong position. Keogh in a place where he can't see Martin and Connolly pretty mich in no mans land. He's nether covering Keogh/the back post or the two men on edge of box.

There was a few times yesterday when the defence were trying to spring the offside trap, but there was always one breaking the line. Which is something they'll need to look at, building that understanding is key. The positioning was poor for their goal, but I'm sure it will be addressed, well I hope it will. But to be fair I thought Connelly did put some good tackles in yesterday, just think there was a few nervous lads out there today.

I suppose it’s easy from the comfort of our professional manager goggles. When you watch it back I think the guy was always going to launch it back in. With a bit more defensive drilling we will know to push out all at the same time leaving Martin offside.

Both of their fault. Happens but Martin is a good quality striker. You can't give him an inch let alone a free header. Would love to have him play for us.

They tried the same tactic a number of times in the match and Connolly was not covering that RB position

Not all good strikers have great goal scoring records. Some have other important attributes that contribute to being a good striker.

I only watched the highlights on sky from yesterday so if anyone who watched love disagrees feel free, but we looked all over the place defensively in the first half particular from crosses into the box.

There were periods when we did look a little all over the place, 2 new players in a back 4 and one playing out of position probably didn't help. I'm sure when Gretarrson and Ekipeteta are fully fit and we sign a right back we will improve. Plus the 2nd half we defended much better, kept the ball and were in the main on the front foot.

Connolly forgot he was a RB for a moment. It was costly ! Having said that, BC tried it again and again, but he didn’t do it again.
I thought he was solid, as were all the back four. I don’t get this love in with Gabriel. He’s not that good a defender, and lacks composure when on the ball. Connolly is a better defender.

Keogh's fault 100% for me.

His starting position is wrong, As the back player he should be taking his line from the first man but he's clearly behind which allows Martin to drift forward. Only when the ball is played does Keogh step forward trying to play Martin offside but it only left Martin with a free header. Connelly looks to be marking his man (the right winger obscured behind the Play icon) but whether this is what Critchley asked for we don't know.

Even if Connelly was holding an orthodox right-back position he still would have been outside Martin so couldn't have stopped him winning the ball but arguably could have jockeyed him into not having such an easy header.

As a general rule, if a centre-forward scores within the frame of the goal then 99% of the time it will be the centre-back's fault.BC1-0.png
