If you’ve been in discussions before you should know illegal approaches/fines are few and far between. It’s the way of the world.
So in this case, using your example, an illegal approach would not have placed CB in the position to leverage a higher salary at Oxford. That was only possible because we did things the right way and made him a contractural offer. He then went back to Oxford and they offered him more. A player with ambition and true intentions to join would not have done that.
It’s frustrating, but the lad had his few hours in the spotlight. There are no other clubs truly wanting him, in this window or the past windows. I’m not going to get upset about it & help to increase the lads ego further.
Edit: just to add, many approaches are actually instigated by the player via their agent talking unofficially to other clubs, if they are unhappy or have ambition beyond their current club. It happens all the time. The buying club is often in a difficult position and invariably comes out of it being criticised for not following protocol.
