Can lavery step up ?

For league one he'll be excellent. I think he was favoured over Jerry for some of that first season in the championship because he plays the lone striker role better than Jerry, and for whatever reason, we wanted to play that way in some games. Even though Jerry is a technically better player in my view.
Put it this way, I'd much rather SL is playing for us than against us because he's a right pain for defenders.

Favoured over Jerry who,was the first player in nearly 30 years to score 20 league goal then we get relegated. Food for thought eh?

Lets hope so!, he definitely looked capable the first 10 or so games in the first championship season prior to his injury, never looked the same since other than that game at Sheff United where he was excellent, but so was everyone else that day.

Was doomed the moment we broke out the "lavery's on fire" chant during the Blackburn home game. Lets hope Millwall don't come back in for him.

He’d make up a decent strike force but he’s no Jerry - not got the same guile, pushed off the ball too easily and doesn’t contribute half as much as Yates.
Looked like he'd bulked up a little when I met him a few weeks ago. Summer hols food or working out, who knows?

He's different to Jerry, more of a good old fashioned sniffer, similar to Brett.

If he's played in the middle (not on the wing please), and if we sign a taller target man for him to play off (unless Beesley is that player?), yes.

I think Jerry is a better player on the ball, he controls and keeps the ball better, whereas Shayne is quicker. When he first arrived, he scored a few near post goals by beating the defender to a low cross with his pace. He needs to return to those levels of pace /fitness, which he's not shown as much since his injury against Blackburn a couple of seasons ago (although being played out wide hasn't helped)

Champing is actually the correct word, chomping is an Americanism and a modern version of the proper saying, but both are used, however, champing is 100% the correct word. Here to educate all day 😜
Chomping is because he’s eating to much as a human being. It’s a play on champing which is correct for the Mr. Ed’s of this world. Do try to keep up.

I can’t be bothered to copy and paste google but we are both right so let’s call it a draw 😂

Is Lavery a bit overweight or just a stocky little fucker? I wish I was as “fat” as he is!!

For where he needs to be to play to his talents he’s overweight. That’s on him and the fitness coach and it needs to be addressed.

It’s an opening for him that’s for sure although it needs to be addressed if he’s not up to it and not just keep plugging away at it like we did in key areas last season.

He was good up until he got injured against Blackburn and not really had much chance to play as a striker since.
I think once he is playing in his position regularly and gets a confidence flowing he will be fine and could get 15-20 goals this season

He scored 15 Championshi goals. Charlie scored 19.
But he was dropped, injured, played out of position. 🤷 I suppose the inevitable "he wasn't that great" was always going to come now we've sold him for way under market value (as always). Never have I been more devastated at losing a player since Mickey Burns or Tony Green.

We need match winners and players who can make things happen. We have zero of that. We are mid table outfit currently.

We really need to step up in the market now we’ve lost Yates

Compare that promotion winning team and the likes of Keshi, Yates, Simms and Embleton with now. It’s not a nice look.

Zero creativity and goals but Critchley will know this though. Lavery will need service and I think he could have a great season, just can’t rely on him so we have to spend on a replacement for Yates.

He’s a great player, amazing work ethic… just an interesting stat into a general point really that we always need a few scoring.

Sort of linked too that we lost Charlie and Vaughany but still managed to get to Wembley again. A bit of an underrated miracle that really.

Yes ..undoubtedly

Play him in his correct position and he will rip it up. His speed at closing down opposition players will reap rewards with some of the divisions slowest defenders

Jerry's second goal.

I hereby predict - he is going to be awesome this season. Played in his natural roles as striker - mark my words. Two goals against Burton to get off the mark......Might have a tenner on it.

Jerry Yates = 241 mins per goal
Kyle Joseph = 303 mins per goal
Big Gaz = 444 mins per goal
Lavery = 630 mins per goal

If he gets the chance to play in a 2 I think he'll be great. He and Joseph is a very interesting proposition.

Lavery was favoured, but I didn't agree with it. Yates was on the bench a lot during that first season back in the championship and I think Lavery does play the lone striker role better than Yates. But we should have been playing a system that suited our best striker in my view.
I think Lavery will do very well in league one.

I don't know how Lavery will do. The hardest thing to predict for me. Could be brilliant could be terrible but will probably be in between.

Let’s hope he does good. If he’s out injured what is our plan b?
Plan b is to get relegated to League 2, and sell Lavery to help make up for the drop in income. 😆

Unless we sign some more strikers to replace Gaz and Jerry, starting with KJ. We will have 3 strikers by the end of the day, and plenty of time to add another before Burton.

He looked pretty slim on the training video from Ireland yesterday, I just think he's a stocky build. Like I say I wish I was as "fat" as him!! 😂

I disagree with some saying he lacks pace. When he’s fit he runs men off the ball and hassles and that’s to his credit. Good work rate. He was played out of position when we last saw him get a run of games.

I like Shayne but the jury is out on him being the answer. Last season, along with many, he was dreadful for long periods. The club need to have identified a replacement for Yates.
I think describing him as 'dreadful' is being a little harsh. Yes, his contribution in certain games might have been limited, and I think it would perhaps be fair to say he often appeared to be lacking any real sense of purpose or direction, but I frankly think that was down to the lack of constructive coaching from the pair of numpties we had in charge for much of the last campaign. 'Shocking' doesn't even begin to come close to describing the 'car crash' they presided over ...

I wouldn't disagree about your point about coaching, he was also played out of position, lost all confidence and was a shadow of what we had seen the previous season. I would describe some of his performances as dreadful however, but as I say, he wasn't the only one.

when he first arrived here and after watching his first few games i said on here that he had the potential to be better than Yates. Have to say that sadly i think i got too carried away with that assessment. However, we are in a league lower than last season but the key to getting the best out of Lavery is quite simple really. Play him in his best position! He's at his best when he's in the box and getting ahead of his marker to get on the end of the things. He's simply not good enough technically to play out wide even though you can't fault his effort to help out. Could be a make or break season for him. Firstly he needs the chance to play as an out and out striker and then secondly he needs to take that chance.

Clean slate for everyone after last season's debacle. We ought to see improvement all over. Lavery, Thompson, Dougall, Ekpiteta, Husband, Carey. What is Lyons capable of?

100%, it is a big season for the whole club. Every player has to do their bit and give everything to get the club back in the Championship.
