Carey

He's not a terrible player, the game just completely passes him by. I've said for a while he needs to go on loan somewhere but Critch loves him and I am at a loss to see what attributes he has.

Especially when we have Weir, Dale and moreover Dembele who could bring so much more to the team.

Partly because of the tactics, formation and role he is expected to play, Carey is often too deep, and expected to be able to tackle, so has to play attritional, minimum risk football. This is not his game, as his main assets are that he is quick-footed, likes a give-and-go and can shoot. As many on here have said, he should be further forward, behind the front two. Arguably, of course, he should not be on the pitch at all.

Oakley booth was the worst player on the pitch today by a fukin mile! He should have been subbed after half an hr or at the latest at half time. CJ was not at it today but has been our best player this season for me. Straight red sending off diabolical. It’s just one of those games today. A great fight back when Dembele came on but just too late. Hey-fukin-ho n on we go to the odd who are on good form.

SC had a reasonably good second half, but he needs to look up rather than playing a ball blindly to the wings.
On at least 2 occasions their player easily intercepted the pass and set up attacks down our right.

As said, he either needs to be playing further forward, or come on from the bench. Our midfield was very weak again today, not just down to SC

Carey 2nd half did ok.

First half (along with quite a few) he was garbage. If you watch their free kick for the 2nd though he gets muscled to easily away from where he was standing creating the space for the opp to score bottom right.

First off I think Carey has been awful this season and I don't think he should be starting however I have some sympathy for him as he's playing in a position on the left of a wierd 3 that just doesn't suit him. I thought he played better more central with Dougal after the sending off when Oakley Booth went off.

I think saying Carey was only ok in the second half was totally unfair. Not great in the first half, but who was? At least he was trying to close players down, something CJ never even thought about in the first half.

After such a poor first half for the whole team and given that it is possible to make 5 substitutions, I was surprised that the same 11 came out for the second half.
I would have subbed Carey but he did improve second half but it was too little too late.

The big decision was to send Casey off despite there being two covering players behind the advancing Grimshaw. Yellow at best.

....Carey Carey Carey. My thoughts and I said them during the game yesterday. Carey has all season been a player you just never notice, the game passes him by. However yesterday, in that first half he was getting really involved to the extent that i really noticed him. Thought he did some good things but there again he did some awful things including setting up their first goal. But it's still a mystery how he gets so many starts when Dembele is sat on the bench way too much.

let's not make things up. Only one covering player and would he have got there before the player got the shot away. Not sure. Grimshaw was advancing though. At the game i thought yellow but having seen it again several times i can understand why he gave a red.

He wasn't last man by any stretch of the imagination. There was a covering defender well behind Grimshaw.

We can manage when one player isn't keeping up with the game but when Oakley Booth is doing it as well then we were screwed. Both of them needed a kick up the arse today
OB was injured in a fair but hard tackle in first 10 minutes. Struggling to walk all half. Why doesn’t Critchley see that 😡

Grimmy would have saved it!
He covered his goal well, as you can see from pic, so striker had a decision to make.

The only logic I can see for starting Carey over Dembele is the (apparent) need to keep it solid in the first 60 mins before unleashing Dembele at the end. Not saying I agree, but it's all I can think of because the game passed Carey and OB buy last week and it seems like the same thing happened yesterday.

By the time the man was brought down, our man was behind Grimmy. That's before he went down right on the edge. Seriously.
It’s when first contact is made though, not when he’s eventually fallen down, rolled over and ground to sn eventual stand still 😂

Structure is key for the gaffer.

He likes this 3 man flat midfield and Dembele can’t fit into that. He “risked” it against bottom of the league but would have hyperventilated at the thought of playing him against Peterborough. The risk against Cheltenham was also quickly changed when we took Dembele off… back to the flat 3.

Not a great tactic is it?
If you have a good player than can damage the opposition play him from the start and take the lead.
It might mean we have to be a bit more conservative with the wing backs if Dembele starts but I'd be happy with Lyons, Thompson and Gabriel covering those positions.
Which then means Hamilton doesn't start every game but I think he would actually be effective in the solid for 60 scenario.
Hamilton totally ineffective without empty space to run into, but if we take the lead and the opposition have to come at us he is great in that situation.

The game passed Carey by, yet he’s our highest rated player from yesterday?

I wonder if he’s maybe just become a bit of an automatic whipping boy ?

good point. Our midfield were pretty much always in a line of three square on with each other. Their first goal came from a great forward pass out of defence to one of their midfield players who had got into space between our two lines of defence and midfield. Great stuff from them but it's something we don't seem able to do.
