Companies in Blackpool that are no more

Would have been 1964 at Layton, I think the managers name was Nick but could be wrong.
Brought back memories, I guess you remember Ian Marshall, Derek Dowell, Eric Hall, Bernard Bradley, Alf Waters, Denise Hurst, Pauline Radley. Loads more of course, but as that was around 60 years ago………

Georgy Blackburns?

Me mum went there, think she knew "Georgy"?

Also glad Fatboy remembered Berry's pie shop on Dean'sgate, used to go there from work to get a "growler" & a bee sting..... Happy days

Catterall and Swarbrick brewery on Talbot Road
Andrew Vass Mens outfitters
Diana Warren —-ditto——
C & A department store
Lewis’s department store
The Lemon Tree nightclub
Yates‘s Wine Bar
Tivoli cinema
etc etc too many to mention!
Good grief….my Dad used to get his suits ( bespoke😳) from Andrew Vass….remember going there and laughing( discreetly) at how pompous it was….talk about pins and needles….but in fairness that was well before the days of mass production from Vietnam,Bangladesh,Cambodia and goodness knows where else.Anyone bought clothing recently that was made here..sadly I think not.

And my dad!

Regent, Hippodrome, Princess, Tatler, Ritz, Odeon, King Edward, Oxford, Royal Oak. Clifton Palace....
Must be some I've forgotten?

Palladium, Rendezvous, Tivoli, Dominion (Bispham), and not forgetting the various cinemas in other parts of the Fylde.

Woodmans BMW.
up on chapel lane there was a paint sprayer, ARP Baltic, think named after a horse.
Warbreck Hill High School for Boys.

UCP tripe shop and cafe.
Comet electrical store.

Anyone remember H.D Askew estate agents.
Another Fylde business rogue who ended up in prison for fraud.

Streets had cafes in Victoria Road, Cleveleys, and near The Squirrel. Better quality by far than what followed, IMO.
Used to work at Streets Bakery on Bristol Ave as an apprentice maintenance fitter & me & my boss work go to a long gone Tattersal's butcher's in Bispham Village for our pies rather than stomach one of Streets. Don't think the large spoon for stirring the meat & potato had ever been washed 🤮

Clobber.

And there was an upmarket place next to Dillons....I paid £200 for a coat there back in 78. Also returned a shirt a year after buying it having been worn twice. ( I was a cheeky get).

Davenport and Shaw or other way round, one did a stretch. Fylde coast has been full of con men over the years. Maybe another thread.

Carleys
Boston Man
Redmans
Mac Fisheries
Ron Reddies

Although the Chicken BBQ Abingdon Street is still there 😮
But does it still sell chicken? Abingdon Street Market isn't a market. So I wouldn't trust the name of any shop on Abingdon Street.

If I slept with the window open, in the morning I wake to the smell of the abattoir washed down with a whiff of C&S brewery polished off with some biscuit aromas. The rock factory would provide the smells for elevensees.

It was like an inbuilt diet.
Still preferable to the smell you'd awake to if you slept with the window shut.

A few weeks ago I had to drive into Blackpool centre.
When leaving and coming out of the main car park I decided on a nostalgic trip, up Charnley Road etc.
Could not recognise one shop on Coronation St.
Charnley Road was narrower than I remembered (it wasn't really) and the boarding houses seemed smaller (they weren't)
The memories I had of growing up in Fleet St almost brought a tear to my eyes.
I think I'm the only one left of the 'gang', except for 2 bothers and their sister, who emigrated to USA many years ago.
I am still in touch with them.

Apollo *something*, where Sainsbury’s garage is now. By the Mecca bingo. Random location that didn’t last long.

Fine fare? Now gonna be a hotel/tram depot. Exactly the combo I look for when booking a holiday hotel.
Apollo 2000 - like a curry’s or Comet

Cocker St baths, Derby baths, and the one down South Shore i never went to, all gone
I actually saw my first female pubic hairs at Derby Baths. She was a horse and no wonder they closed it.

You can lead a horse to water, but for god's sake don't let it dive in the pool.

Devvy Rd abbotoir. Actually on Abbotoir St, which was renamed, unsurprisingly, when they built houses on the site. Next door to C&S brewery, also gone, opposite from Devvy Rd hospital, also gone. Bit of a pattern really.
