I think that's the worry isn't it both on and off the pitch that it's taking us a long time to work out what the opposition is about. Is that bad planning or poor reactions? Colin Greenall could see the problem within the first 10 minutes - maybe they should employ him as a coach on a matchday rather than a pundit!
 
FA coaching courses which Greenall is involved with encourage you to pick a philosophy of playing and stick with it and persist.
Southgate epitomised this logic and obviously failed twice.
Adaption is the key but always relies in personnel which unfortunately we are lacking.
 
Not to state the obvious but we have Bournemouth and Fulham in the next 3 games. As above they have the quality to bury us. Millwall are established as well.

Hopefully we can strengthen before Fulham.

Games don’t get any easier in this league in fact looking at those upcoming games there getting even harder.
 
thought we did well in the second half. First half we were awful. His cooments are spot on and I particularly agree with him with the speed of thought and it's that which lets us down badly. Every other teams awareness of what is happening around them is so much faster than ours. That's why I said elsewhere that I have my doubts about some players being able to step up to this level. I know it can happen to any player but twice in the second half yesterday Anderson was waiting for the ball to arrive to him. He was stood flat footed allowing their player to anticipate the pass to him and step in in front of Anderson and get the ball. And their right back sussed CJ straight away. Pace and nothing else and his own pace meant he comfortably coped with him.

i think that has been a consistent thing, that we have waited for the ball to arrive at feet - ive noticed quite often where a pass looks dead cert for a blackpool palyer only to be intercepted. if there is one difference between what we have seen so far this year and last is that the games are played at a higher intensity, we seem to currently have a tactic to try to take out that intensity, and it isnt working. Second half yesterday we stepped up and looked decent

is that true about the FA because like you say, being able to adapt is the crux of any success, in any field. England, even though they got to the fnal were quite one dimensional. at the moment in this division we are as well. it might be that the players are still gelling and havent quite got the read of everyone around them, ignoring some obvious weak links and square pegs in round holes. an example of that is we are not pressing as much as last season, and yet last night we had two front players who have shown individually that they are willing and able to do it. my guess is that they have it in their head that they will share the duty but dont quite know when each is going to do it yet.

i think it will come.

It's the lack of in game flexibility that is his blind spot imo. Maybe he thought we'd impose ourselves more and make them dance to our tune but when we clearly weren't doing that, it took 70 mins to shift the shape a bit and even then it was a tweak, not a big change.

On the other hand, his patience is a virtue in different situations and on numerous occasions last year it paid off, whereas I'd have made bigger changes.

I don't think he can go 'same again' on Saturday tho.

It always makes me laugh when a forward chases down a centre back and the ball is charged down and goes out of play.
Ultimately we have again lost possession and surely the idea of 'the press' is to win the ball back quickly with opposition out of position.
Time and again last night Coventry made the pitch huge by getting players (so-called right/left back) into forward areas not allowing our players to remain as a tight unit to win the ball back.
Gaps between defence , midfield and attack is too large at the moment but like you said it is early days and something that can be addressed but we must do better in possession and retain.

Do the coaching staff not have examples of the opposition's play to show the players? Do they not discuss how their opponents will set up?
 
regarding what he says though, he's not going to come out in public and say X was garbage and Y's got all the pace of a glacial drift. Whatever he might say in the dressing room.

Of course, if he continues picking Y when Z is available then that's different.
