Cummings head on a plate for Christmas

He said that back in January. I’m surprised the Cummings obsessives missed that...or perhaps it’s just an expedient forgetfulness on their part to assist in their continuing campaign against the evil Tories and those who dare advise them.

It was in his blog - was it all over the press - January is a long time ago in the current scheme of things

For all his many faults at least Cummings fought against the standard political view of what could be done.

He must have done something right if both Labour and the Tories hated him.

How come no one has ever reminded us of that when he was being railed against all through the Durham fiasco? Not once did anyone say, well, he'll be gone by Christmas.

Just like he did with that episode, he's probably amended his blog after the event 😂 😆

Why the surprise? Cummings always said he would be gone by the end of the year. Now just let Carrie get on with running the country.

Yes it seems a lot of political capital has been wasted by Johnson over his refusal to sack him a few months ago. If he was leaving in December anyway why not just get rid of him in May and avoid the ensuing sh1tstorm? It’s not like Cummings has helped turn round the Government’s ineptitude since then.

Oh yes...totally correct. Probably Johnson just wanted to stick by the man that helped him be on the winning side of Brexit and ultimately secure the office he craved which is understandable. If anything Johnson hasn’t been ruthless which is what the job requires...especially with Brexit and Covid on the go at the same time.

people also forget that Brexit was a decision of the voters at the end of the day when they get embroiled in party political point scoring

Just read the blog again. It was the one when he was encouraging 'weirdos' to apply for jobs, and that they would then mean he would be redundant by Christmas. That was pre-COVID, and whoever has come in has certainly not done a good enough job for him to leave with everything running marvellously, or am I missing something?

He and his allies on here are now skewing it as if he said he had a definite leaving date. That's clearly bollox.

The original weirdo and misfit! Who cares whether he intended to leave at the end of 2020 or not! He is going! Bozo next!

Sir Reginald Smythe-Carter has been quoted as saying how relieved that he no longer has to wear Thai Dye in Whitehall and that he no longer needs a backpack with spare clothes to change into for lunch at The Garrick.

A backpack? A portmanteau carried by the butler, surely? 😉

And he’s gone 👍
Are you sure?
He might just be having a walk to Windsor Castle, (it’s too far to Barnard), just to see if he’s fit enough to be ceremoniously kicked up the arse, all the way down Downing St, at Christmas?

Always sad to see Westminster civil servants leaving their job with the obligatory box stuffed with their personal things.
I wonder if he snaffled a pack of custard creams, a Jubilee silver spoon, some departmental napkins and a teapot with Margaret Thatcher's photo glazed onto it like others did?

I care.
We are stuck with this Government for another four years in all probability. This is a big reset opportunity for Boris.
Dominic Cummings was poison to the possibility of having a decent regime.
I hope Boris can grab this opportunity and develop something more constructive very quickly. He needs to for himself, and for all the rest of us as well.

Another SPAD who came in thinking he could mould the Civil Service in his own image, and leaves with his tail between his legs. I am confident in saying that he is not being missed.

What was all that public departure about? He could have slipped out via 70 Whitehall with no fuss, but clearly wanted his last fifteen minutes of fame.

🙄 He decided to do the shorter walk first to be sure that he was ok to do the longer walk later

Briefing against Bojo and Nut Nuts and dealing with Weaselgoveage as Boris dithered, too

What a Kant

Not that I believe everything I read in the papers, of course

One thing is for sure. He will go down as a hugely influential member of this Government and one of the heroes of Brexit!

He sure did shake up the civil servants at Whitehall for a while!

I bet the sickness absence record went through the roof whilst DC was there 😄

Whilst I can’t say I has much time for Cummings, I think you sum up very well why radical change and modernisation in the Civil Service is necessary.

To view change resistance and the ability to fend it off as some kind of quality or ‘Mission Accomplished’ is the sort of attitude most of us might associate with workplaces pre-1980’s.👎

Unfortunately though it’s a bus that will have to be turned around very slowly as I’m afraid too much quick and jerky movement will shatter too many inflexible old egos.... I used the phrase the other day ‘evolution not revolution’.

I mean the upheaval when the tea and biscuits trolley was stopped was enough to push many over the edge.

Sounds like the PMs missus has won the day in the number 10 comedy. Carrie on cumming, well actually he’s already fired

This news is quite revealing about the state of Johnson's government and his priorities as a PM.

A few months ago, our PM expended an enormous amount of political capital in defending Cummings when he was shown to have broken the lockdown rules. Does anyone remember the rather nauseating co-ordinated messages about Cummings 'acting as a good father from various cabinet ministers, the smears on members of the public who reported it and the farcical press conference in Downing Street that raised more questions than it answered. The fact that Cummings was not sacked at this time will have cost lives as many people stopped listening to and following government guidelines as a result, spreading CoViD more widely in our communities. We were made to believe that Cummings was indispensible and had a post Brexit plan for our country's future.

Now a few months later, because of the infighting inside the government and on the advice of his girlfriend Cummings is actually sacked. It really stinks. The government should be fully focussed on Brexit negotiations and managing the pandemic, not on this small stuff. A responsible government with firm, fair leadership would be doing their best to guide us through these times.

Our PM is weak and has no guiding principles, other than satisfying his own narcissim. He is easily manipulated by those around him and it would seem that he now has a new puppet master. This sacking won't save him as a PM, the truth is that he is not up to the job and this becomes more apparant with every passing day. I cannot be alone in wishing that the grown-ups were back in charge of the country.

You seem to know a lot about what's going on inside Downing Street. Have you got someone on the inside?

Good summary.

But where is Gove in all this?

Is all this carry on just a way of stopping Gove’s campaign to replace Johnson - assisted by Cummings - in its tracks?

Cummings whilst exhibiting a talent for data harvesting,

Agree with some of that EBSN, but it is my opinion that he is not that he is easily manipulated; throughout his life Johnson has been the arch manipulator. He may give the impression of allowing himself to be being manipulated, but that is borne out of his lack of appetite for hard work and absence of any great political conviction, and his preference to let others do the heavy lifting. I don`t think he is knowingly duped, it`s just he is a bit of a loafer.

Like so many before in Johnson`s life when the time comes for people to go under buses Johnson has little compunction, as his `self-preservation at all cost` instinct kicks in. He is a survivor par excellence - one of life`s cockroaches.

Johnson has never been a `commons tea room` type politician, and because of Covid has probably not hosted many `get to know you` meetings with new MPs - so hasn`t built much of a rapport and support from them. In fact the number of embarrassing U-turns (especially the latest Rashford one) would have royally cheesed off many. I suspect that this has been done in part to allow a return to a more cabinet lead government and restoration of powers to secretaries of states, in order to quell the unease on the back benches.

I also think it will lead to a government that is less hostile to the commons, and a more collegiate approach to government, after the failed experiment with centralisation of power and treating parliament protocol with undisguised contempt.

Whilst Cummings will be castigated by the party over time, we mustn`t lose sight of the fact it was allowed to happen because of Johnson`s character failings which make him unsuitable for high office.

Bernard Jenkins` fanciful comment that this would lead to "the restoration of Conservative trust, respect and integrity" did make me chuckle - whilst it`s a step in the right direction, I do think that is a tad optimistic...
