Cummings whilst exhibiting a talent for data harvesting,
This news is quite revealing about the state of Johnson's government and his priorities as a PM.
Our PM is weak and has no guiding principles, other than satisfying his own narcissim. He is easily manipulated by those around him and it would seem that he now has a new puppet master. This sacking won't save him as a PM, the truth is that he is not up to the job and this becomes more apparant with every passing day. I cannot be alone in wishing that the grown-ups were back in charge of the country.
Agree with some of that EBSN, but it is my opinion that he is not that he is easily manipulated; throughout his life Johnson has been
the arch manipulator. He may give the impression of allowing himself to be being manipulated, but that is borne out of his lack of appetite for hard work and absence of any great political conviction, and his preference to let others do the heavy lifting. I don`t think he is knowingly duped, it`s just he is a bit of a loafer.
Like so many before in Johnson`s life when the time comes for people to go under buses Johnson has little compunction, as his `self-preservation at all cost` instinct kicks in. He is a survivor par excellence - one of life`s cockroaches.
Johnson has never been a `commons tea room` type politician, and because of Covid has probably not hosted many `get to know you` meetings with new MPs - so hasn`t built much of a rapport and support from them. In fact the number of embarrassing U-turns (especially the latest Rashford one) would have royally cheesed off many. I suspect that this has been done in part to allow a return to a more cabinet lead government and restoration of powers to secretaries of states, in order to quell the unease on the back benches.
I also think it will lead to a government that is less hostile to the commons, and a more collegiate approach to government, after the failed experiment with centralisation of power and treating parliament protocol with undisguised contempt.
Whilst Cummings will be castigated by the party over time, we mustn`t lose sight of the fact it was allowed to happen because of Johnson`s character failings which make him unsuitable for high office.
Bernard Jenkins` fanciful comment that this would lead to "the restoration of Conservative trust, respect and integrity" did make me chuckle - whilst it`s a step in the right direction, I do think that is a tad optimistic...
