Daily AVFTT Feature: Day One: Your First Keeper?

Another one for Tony Waiters (we're getting old guys!)

Anyone remember Melvyn (or was it Mervin) Capleton? What a liability!

A Pool memory that always brings me a smile is when Capleton was in nets against Bamber Bridge at their place in a preseason friendly. Being Leyland lads my mate and I went and ended up stood behind the goal. We had a bit of a chat with him during warm up, very laid back character. As the game kicked off he turned to us, grinned, winked and simply said 'Enjoy!'. He then proceed to have a shocking game. Still makes me laugh. 😁😁😁

First keeper I remember was Barry Siddall.

So we thought we'd try and keep a bit of BFC going on AVFTT and so we'll start for the next couple of weeks with 'Your First'

So let's kick off with who was your first Blackpool FC Keeper?
Steve Banks. Loved him. Still the best Ive seen at Bloomers.

Tony Waiters and Gordon West two great Keepers, couldn't remember which was first.

First match programme says Kevin Thomas ( Ipswich Town) 1967 and I really rated him as a young school kid as I was at the time but Alan Taylor played more games that season. What a season that was!

For me I think it was Dave Stewart in 1978 which was my first visit to ER,going over on that ruddy National Express bus that called at every town on the way.Only seen Dirty at local ground before then where it'd have been David Harvey.

Good old Coliseum bus station providing that service.

Steve McIlhargey. That purple top, those trackie bottoms, that one handed pen save at Wembley. What a man
Yeah I always remember him in trackie bottoms & thought he always wore them ... but after re-watching him in the 1989/90 season thing on you-tube I notice he didn't wear them to start with ... I'm waiting for the "tipping point" match he started wearing them 😃

Being an old bugger and watching the Pool from being about 7/8 mine was Tony Waiters in the mid sixties, from what I recall of him we've not had a better one since.Waitersges-71983775-1024x1024.jpgWaitersges-71983775-1024x1024.jpgWaitersges-71983775-1024x1024.jpgWaitersges-71983775-1024x1024.jpgWaitersges-71983775-1024x1024.jpgWaitersges-71983775-1024x1024.jpg

We scored second too Robbosa - a Bradshaw og? It snowed as well I seem to remember.
Didn't Darren Bradshaw score our goal & The own goal ? ... Not sure about the snow but I remember being gutted that Andy Morrison wasn't playing ... it was new years eve 1994 wasn't it ? 😮

George Farm,my dad used to say he was agile as a cat and as a kid I thought he was a top goalie as we called them but with so much time in solitary confinement I recently watched the youtube 10 minute highlights of the`53 cup final and Farm had a stinker being responsible for at least 2 of the goals but I suppose without those the game would not have remained in many memories outside of Blackpool for so long.

I remember Hall occasionally standing in for Farm and then Wylie.

Surely our greatest era for keepers was the sixties when we had West and Waiters who both played for England,West later when he was at Everton.

Ian Hesford - I lived near Ian in Cleveleys and as kids we used to play against him in the park. He was only a few years older than us but even then he was difficult to beat. RIP

Tony Waiters. In the days when a goalie could only take four steps then he had to bounce the ball. There was no time wasting like we saw against Tranmere.

Dont wanna give my age away he was sold for 15 times what we paid for him🤪

Alan Taylor was the first keeper i saw, but Budgie was the first keeper i took notice of. There was a period where Budgie and George Wood were competing for the top spot and i can remember being gutted on a match day when Wood was in goal.
