Defending at set pieces

Watching the game last night, it struck me that Gretarson and Ekpiteta both stood at the near post. And that a corner to or just beyond the far post would have to be defended by relatively short players such as Turton.

There was a corner like that from the right in the second half which eventually went out for a goal kick via a scramble and bit of panicky Maxwell flapping.

Generally I think we we look vulnerable at corners.

Ballard needs to come straight in he's by far and away our best CB who kept out one of the best young strikers in the world recently on international duty,i'm not convinced at all by that back four if i'm honest.

Yep, he'd be back in for me too. Sure we, all recognise Ekpiteta is improving but could he have done better with their equaliser last night?
If Ballard is your best centre half he plays. Liverpool wouldn't leave VVD out just because some-one has done well in his place. when suspended or injured.

I've said this for a while. We are as bad at set pieces as any side in the country. When we're defending them we look all over the place. Against PBoro we left the goalscorer standing on his own with an unchallenged header. When we're attacking, it's no better. There's no threat on the goal in any form. Just a floated, pointless cross for the defenders to gobble up.

I’m not a fan of zonal marking either, but I think ypu have to give some credit to Donny last night, they came out like Barcelona second half and wanted it more than us. Then there’s the stone wall pen at the end when the lad decided to play basketball with it in the box, we score the pen and it ends 3-3 and there’s nowhere near the amount of negativity. For some reason we switched Off at half time and this needs to be rectified as we would of walked through the game if we had been. In NC we trust, he will sort it out.

Unfortunately, I don't have your faith in Critchley.

Although I have liked your post and I do agree, I must add in NC we trust however I am at a total loss to understand no subs until the 81st minute and then 4. Why? what was he hoping to achieve in 9 minutes. Surely he and assistants could see change was needed before then. Everyone else could.

It would appear he couldn't, that and the players lack of resilience is why we're at the wrong end of the table.

On the ratio of saves to shots, I just googled a website which provides those numbers.

Maxwell’s save ratio, at just under 56 per cent, is the second lowest in the league after Oxford.

After only 13 games there has to be a degree of randomness in such stats..but on the other hand I can’t recall him being beaten by too many “worldies”....

Yes I know, but no matter the manager I’ve watched over the years very few have made subs that make sense to me. There either too late, too early or the wrong player 🤷🏻‍♂️
