Djokovic Visa

Borders are controlled at state level which is why we've been pretty COVID free in WA.
Isn't that the border between you and other Australian states though, where as the Australian international border is controlled Federally by the Australian Border Force (ABF).

No we can stop internationals from coming in too.
According to Australian government websites the international borders are controlled by them and not at state level.

I guess you may be able to increase Restrictions but not lower them as that could have a massive effect on the rest of the country?

I’m still struggling to understand why his inaccurate Visa application did not play a greater part in the court proceedings. It seemed much stronger argument than the “anti-VAX“ one

Continuing on the point, it is also surely more persuasive to say that he presents a risk to good order because he seems to have no respect for sovereign Covid rules, attending functions and meeting a journalist (even posing for photographs without a mask) when he knew that he had tested positive. He has admitted this in court documents.

Throw in failing to mention that he had travelled to 2 high-risk countries in the 14 days before travelling to Spain and it should have been a more straightforward case

It will be interesting to see what the judges reasons are when they issue them, not that it will change the outcome of course but interesting nonetheless

The approach the Government adopted was actually harder to appeal against because it was a broader brush consideration, harder to disprove. I watched the appeal online and onus was on ND's lawyers to show that the minister had not followed due process and acted unreasonably in exercise of his considerable powers in how he had considered the issues, evidence and both sides of the arguments. The appeal process was always going to be difficult for ND. It was a judicial review, not the merits of whether ND should stay or not. Some observers got a bit excited because ND lawyers presented his case first. The Government lawyer then followed and carefully dismantled the 3 grounds of appeal. The judgement was not a surprise to Australian lawyers, especially when they heard the legal presentations and we also didn't see all the evidence put forwwrd in the court bundles.

Weird how people seem happy to see him kicked out, seems to have been used as a political point by a country who turned into North Korea over covid.

Bizarre world we live on currently where some in Australia because they suffered horrendous treatment now want to see others treated that way too.

So now is he banned for 3 years making a mockery of the tournament?

I wonder if this type of thing could happen in other countries with harsh rules, champions league games, World Cup etc.

Teams losing games as some best players not allowed in all over a dying covid narrative and overreaction....

Spot on.

The UK and plenty of other countries have given exemptions for sports stars during Covid times and long before it.

We have even given preferential tax treatment to sportsmen/women to ensure that we were able to continue to host top events like Wimbledon, Champions League, Open Golf, etc.

The Djokovic thing was only ever a political thing and the square root of feck all to do with health.

As it stands at the moment, ND would not be able to play in the French Open. Their current regulatons require all players and spectators to have full vaccination certificates to enter a stadium. Of course, things may change by the end of May.
The USA also requires vaccine certificates to enter the country

Tennis Australia (TA) has now issued a statement saying it deeply regrets the situation over the last 2 weeks, the impact on players and that it will conduct a full review after the tournament is finished.
Interestingly, a document was leaked to the press a few days ago. This included 2 letters sent by the Federal authorities to TA in November that state clearly that unvaccinated players who have had Covid in the last 6 months are NOT regarded as exempt for Border entry purposes. They also state that TA shoild liaise closely with the Australian Border Force regrding entry requirements.
Despite those letters TA did not liaise with the ABF and wrote on the 7 December to the Association of Tennis Professional (ATP) with guidance from their own Chief Medical Officer stating that unvaccinated players, who had recently had Covid, could apply for an exemption and the process for getting an exemption.
So, either TA cocked up massively or they deliberately attempted to bend the rules or bounce the Federal authorities to get ND in. The fact that they did not liaise with the ABF, when advised to do so, suggests the latter.

Three more interesting developments. Firstly, Tennis Australia have been meeting all of NDs huge legal bills, in his case against the Federal Government. The same Tennis Australia which also receives huge grants from the Federal Government. Secondly, it is not surprising that TA paid his legal costs when their CEO has been a personal friend of ND for over a decade. The other unvaccinated player who was deported, Voracova, also asked for legal help from the CEO but was refused - obviously not a personal friend! Thirdly, ND is an 80% owner of a biotech firm that is researching and making Covid treatments. I bet he is not sampling their products whilst he is making money from them!

He seems to have all the qualities to become a politician when he gives up tennis

For those of you worried about how Novak is going to be able to continue earning a living, in an unexpected move the ECB have appointed him as England's batting coach.
"We acknowledge he doesn't have a background in our sport but we couldn't overlook the fact that it took Australia 2 weeks to get him out."
😂
I hope you're here all week. :)

Well it appears to me that Tennis Australia need to go in room 101, alongside Djokovic, Boris Johnson , Prince Andrew and anyone else who clearly thinks they are above the laws of the land whilst harbouring serious entitlement issues 👎

In a further twist, ND is apparently in discussion with his lawyers about a claim of £3.2m against the Australian Government for 'mistreatment'. No doubt his legal bills will be funded by Tennis Australia. I can't see them reducing his 3 year ban now!

Russian player Andry Rubev tested positive pre-flight but the Australian border force let him in because he was fully vaccinated. What a total clown show.

seems he's been caught out again although I can't believe it wasn't picked up by the Aussie court. The latest negative covid test dated 22/12/21 has a much earlier serial no than the positive test one submitted on 16/12/21. Clearly his reps have fiddled the dates in order to get him into the country. A full explanation from him of how this can be the case and then he needs seriously banning from playing for a significant period of time.

I have no doubt that the Croatian government will rush to his defence with some trumped up story that will rank alongside going to Castle Bernard to test you eyesight in the believability stakes. Those who want to believe will believe.

That seems to explain why he was out and about after the 16th December cos it was negative. When they played with the data they forgot he had been seen out and interviewed.

The serial number suggests he had covid just before the dates he was travelling to Spain as a superspreader!

As i said earlier, just a mountain of bull shit from him and his team. Really makes you question his overall integrity.

I'll just say this. His worst run of form over the last 10+ years came in 2016-2018 where he failed to win a GS on 8 consecutive occasions and lost in the Olympics in the first round. Maria Sharapova was caught for doping in March 2016. Djokovic struggled for any sort of form and then 'took a break' citing an injury that had plagued him for 'the last 18 months'.

Of course it could be a total coincidence.
