Favourite city outside the UK

Tokyo: Modern meets ancient in the most kooky of ways.
Kyoto: Beautiful gardens, and parks, and like all Japanese cities, immaculately clean with amazingly courteous people.
Memphis: Sun Studios, Stax Museum, Elvis, Lorraine Motel and Civil Rights History.
Rio: Edgy city with beautiful beaches!
Rome: Honeymoon there 46 years ago.
Venice: Delightfully mysterious on a misty February evening.
Palma de Mallorca: Gorgeous little City, lived there for 10 years.
NYC and Washington D.C. and Boston, Love American Cities.

Some good shouts for Lucca, lovely place. Any more NZ contributions?
did New Zealand on a cruise so pretty much only got a day in each place. Neither Auckland or Wellington blew me away thinking how great they were. Dunedin I really enjoyed but that's because perhaps it coincided with it being their big fete day or whatever term you call it. Enjoyed Napier too but neither of them are 'big' cities as far as cities go.

A sobering fact…
Prague is still a beautiful medieval city, and was not destroyed in WW2 like so many other eastern European cities, because Hitler said he wanted the city to be “a museum to an extinct race”.

Which is why the Jewish quarter and ancient cemetery still exist in Prague. In other cities, like Vienna and Warsaw, Jewish cemeteries were flattened, and headstones were cut up, reversed and used as street paving. And I think the Communists in Soviet bloc countries carried on that practice using up the granite stocks.

Sorry, this was meant to be an enjoyable thread.

Dunedin is very Scottish in character and means Edinburgh in Gaellic I believe (Which is a great city also) Was there in mid 70s and some great beaches in the area. Big great white population in the cold ocean may put some off going in. Vibrant music scene too. Saw Lou Reed while I was in town. Walked on the wild side that night.

"Walked on the wild side that night"

I bet you had a perfect day though.

San Sebastian is another great city. A Basque stronghold which its citizens are truly proud of. Donostia to give it the name it was born with it has so much. Wrote a review on Tripadvisor years ago. Described it as the Rio of Europe. Got the most views I ever got. Go check this wondrous city out. You won't be disappointed.

Some fantastic places mentioned in this thread.

I'll add

Pittsburgh; was great as a 23 year old having a look around. It felt fresh and safe.

Kuala Lumpur, 20 years ago was definitely at a turning point of history and modernisation. (I loved the humidity - great for my sinuses 🤣)
