Few thoughts

1. The through ball for their goal was fantastic, but I thought equally as good was the one from James through to Keshi in the lead up to our first goal. It was brilliant, absolutely perfectly weighted and shows how important having that ability to pick a pass is. We need a midfielder who can do that!

2. Grimmy is an excellent GK imo, he just impresses every time he plays and with Maxi we aren't short on quality in this department. I can see him becoming our No.1 for quite a few years. I would even go as far as saying I feel more confident when he's playing than when Maxwell is. The save at the end was phenomenal.

3. The fantastic four of Ekpiteta, Husband, Wintle and Dougall was (yet again) the basis for the win. Posh had a lot of the ball but when those four are playing, there just isn't enough space for the opposition to play those intricate passes around the box to carve out chances.

4. The subs. Well done Critchley, the right subs at the right time. Actually if I'm being very picky I would've made them a little earlier but it worked well.

5. Yates - was great to see him on the scoresheet again. I still think he is championship quality but has suffered due to being isolated up front and a midfield that often lacks a killer pass. If we can get the missing piece of the jigsaw in midfield, watch him get 20 next season.

6. I thought Madine had a great game. I know this will probably split opinion but it allowed us to be a bit more direct and mix things up from time to time. It meant that when we had the ball we could be more purposeful with it, in contrast to when they had it.

7. Posh fans saying we're on the same level etc. Their manager needs to learn the importance of having a solid defence otherwise they're going straight back down. The reason we've done relatively well is because we're often (not always) able to struggle in games but still pick up points because we don't concede many. Even yesterday, they kept the ball well but we didn't look in any trouble of conceding at all so were able to stay patient and wait for the chance to come. I think they have the players to stay up, but their inexplicable love affair with Ferguson continually hinders them, for the money they have to spend to get to where others have for a much lower cost.

8. Lavery has looked rusty since coming back from injury, and although he wasn't at his best yesterday I think we did get glimpses. He was making some good runs in the first half especially. He could do with another goal or two to get him going again.

9. The fans I thought were in good voice and decent numbers all things considered. Poor run of form, Covid restrictions, just before Christmas and yet we were only a few hundred down and the vocal backing was decent especially after going behind.

10. It was good to see us come back from a goal down at home. This has been our achilles heel I think, as we really have struggled to break teams down that can afford to sit back. I guess we should be grateful that Posh didn't sit back but it should give a boost of confidence at a really good time. Ok, so they weren't great but every win in this league is hard fought and to have 30 points at the halfway stage in a higher league, 11 points clear of the drop, is excellent for us. Think how often newly promoted sides struggle, including how Hull and Posh are this season. Let's not undervalue how we've performed so far - it's really been very good despite the recent bad patch. I think 6 more wins will definitely be enough, and probably less than that.

edit to add...

11. I forgot to mention Bowler. He isn't at his best, seems to have lost a bit of confidence. However, two assist yesterday and it's all about the numbers. Particularly pleasing imo was, if you watch the replay of the third goal, he has a quick look up before playing a good pass to Yates. That's the kind of thing we need to see more of and it's a sign that he's working on that side of his game i.e. the final ball. Well played Josh!

Excellent OP can’t disagree with any of that lot. The spine of the team Marv, Hubby, Wintle, Kenny and Big Gaz were outstanding yesterday and that should never be compromised, that's what wins games!

Good OP. Was pleased for Jerry Yates. When the team were coming off at end of first half he was patting every player on back and giving encouragement. Not moping around at being on the bench. Think we got our mojo back yesterday.

Great o/p can't argue with any of that.
Yates needs to start, preferably with Madine, ease Lavery back in gradually when defences start to tire, I can't help thinking we rushed him and Maxwell back a bit too soon, but I do understand why.
I think Jerry Yates has loads to offer and it's about time he had an extended run rather than being on the bench.

Bowler has taken a weird confidence dent. Yesterday albeit still a bit frustrating can be magic.

And he only needs to be once or twice a game.

Great read. Only watched the extended highlights as I work however it's great to see Bowler picking up an assist (or two?) as he's definitely got something there, it's just how we get more consistency out of him week in week out. Grimshaw for me was unlucky to lose his place when Maxwell returned, but from that last save, he has great qualities... When was the last time we had two fantastic GKs in the squad.

Jerry Yates has 6 goals in 20 Championship appearances so far.

Jamie Vardy, in his first season in the Championship, managed 4 goals in 26 league appearances that year.

I can only see Yates improving after this year of experience.
Also I think Jerry suffers from being in and out of the team, he seems like a player who needs to get into a rhythm.
Remember last year he started slowly, and really got got going once played with Madine or Simms regularly

Bowler is not far off becoming a massive weapon. And I mean that in the proper old traditional sense! Like a good old plain and simple weapon of mass destruction. He's still a bit too Scud but looked a tad more exocet yesterday. Both of those assists yesterday were exactly what he should be doing, looking up and picking out a player, as well as running into the box. Which with his feet can cause defenses to go into major panic. Like what Fulham did.

Agree about Grimshaw - only one team has put more than one past him in his 10 Championship appearances this season, and that was Forest's 2 in his first game. He's clearly doing stuff right, positionally.

good o/p although for me Wintle and Dougall didn't have their best games.

One other point on Bowler yesterday. Certainly, early doors when the ball was out on the left with Keshi or James, Bowler was moving more into the centre of the pitch maybe allowing Gabriel to push forward on the right.

I was really impressed with Bowler yesterday. Not much came off for him in an attacking sense (assist aside) but his work rate, attitude & decision making were miles better.

Bowler certainly has something, the ability to take defenders on and beat them should never be underestimated, however, he needs to understand that he can be far more effective as a provider rather than trying to score the spectacular.
When he started to cut the ball back into the area yesterday we looked a lot more potent

That's true. Dougal was below par and Wintle looks like he's running out of steam having played so many matches. Not sure where Stewart's injury is atm but it would be good to have a proper third midfield option rather than Connolly. Let's not forget they bossed midfield yesterday and the decisive goal came from a huge deflected cross from our centre-half.

I didn't really get Bowler moving inside. Gabriel wasn't overlapping and it didn't feel as if the position offered enough options. I thought we looked better when we were prepared to mix it up and play balls beyond their back line or the occasional high ball into Madine. Last few games we've just been playing in front of defences and, unless you have Bernado Silva and de Bruyne, nobody really worries about that.

It feels a bit like last season where we hit a few ruts on the way but weren't afraid to go 442 until the confidence comes back. Keeping it simple might be the key for the next few weeks.

Good post with a lot of thought BFC_53. I thought Wintle was a bit off the pace (see my thread), but you are right in the main.
Can we come right? I dunno...maybe.

Keeping it simple is I think key whilst players build their confidence up again. We had definitely dropped the silly passing around our own penalty area. When we did do it, it was in much more advanced positions.

Good post, but would disagree about posh staying up. I think if we had played them two months ago when pool players confidence was sky high we might have put six or seven past them. The number of times we had them pinned in their own penalty area even when they had possession should have led to more reward.

I think we need Bowler and Keshi playing narrower, in the channels and closer to Jerry or Lavery, and get the full backs running into the wide areas. Use the full width properly and support the striker better. Play three at the back to allow the full backs more licence, perhaps. Dujon and Hubby are well suited to flanking Marv at the back.
Yes voy, agree totally that Bowler and Keshi need to play closer to the striker sometimes. We need to find ways to ensure Yates or whoever isn't so isolated. At the moment, with the players we have available I think mostly it will mean having to play two up front, one of which is Madine. But I think playing one up front will become much more effective for us if we can bring in that key midfielder that we're missing in January.

Agree Kurt, Bowler has had a few awful afternoons, but as you say he's the kind of player that can have a stinker and yet can still change the game in a second and he did against Posh. Good to see him getting his head up when in good positions and getting the ball into the right areas.

Excellent summary of our season as much as yesterday

I think it’s crucial we become a fortress at home - we can beat anyone on home soil and the 12th man is vital - the atmosphere on the radio home and away is fantastic and many Clubs we visit are stunned at our sell outs and comment on it as much about our vocal support as our numbers

Totally agree re Grimshaw - I thought at Reading he was outstanding mostly playing as a sweeper, keeping the sharp distribution going right through the 2nd half and why he was dropped was a huge mistake as Maxi clearly wasn’t match fit v Luton.

All the back four have done very well and if we can keep that solidarity we’ll be fine - we are literally 4/5 wins from staying up and yesterday’s victory provided us with much needed breathing space

There are NO easy matches in this Division. You have to be on it and positive every minute of the match - slack or below par performances will cost us dear and has done recently and heads have collectively dropped.

We are now in position where we have a few long term absentees returning from injury - they need to work hard to shift others out of position - we have a large squad - not sure what we need in January but we need to scrap for every point - long way to go yet.

We need a good long term assistant for Critch too

Best wishes

Yes I think he will become that player with a bit more experience. But Critchley seems to want to be patient with introducing him to the first team, and I'm starting to see why considering he has had games where he's struggled. Plus, we need more than one for his position. I reckon we'll go for Brannagan again at some point.

It felt like Brannagan not coming in summer was kind of final. They were a bit triumphant about it. I think Keshi can play there too. We could maybe sign a leftie to replace him out wide. I'm just chewing the cud. Depends who we can get. Carey may start getting more games and that may bring him on. He's 21 in January, hes trained with us for a while now and he's chomping at the bit.

Cows and horses in one paragraph. 👍

Brilliant stuff Voy, you should take this onto the Ashes thread. You'll have ducks, donkeys and headless chickens in no time.

Re Madine. He was a great focal point throughout his time on, holding, laying off. But yesterday he was starting from in front of the defender all day, it's much easier to win the ball from there.

I know he was only on 20 mins but Jerry looked bang at it. Really sharp. And seemingly he's been practicing the Delfonso Exit.

And in summary I think it's easy to forget how young a lot of this team is. We shouldn't expect miracles from them, but it's a great time to watch them learn. Some of these lads are going to be stars for us.
