Formula One 2022 thread

Yeah maybe but his best F1 finish is 4th so far where as Charles has 3 wins (I think) + multiple podiums, he's got a bit to prove yet.

If the Mercedes team can find half a second, we're gonna have a 3 horse race on our hands. Which can only be good for F1, can't wait for Australia in 2 weeks.
Not sure the Mercs are contenders this year, it would need a redesign from the looks of it, stranger things have happened mind.

The driver of the day vote was an interesting one. I might be biased but I actually thought it was Lewis. To gain the places he did on track with the hard tyres against cars running mediums was brilliant, especially given the issues he has with the car. He was really unfortunate that the pit lane was closed under the virtual safety car as otherwise he'd have been a few positions higher still and thus probably would've bagged DOTD.

Good win for Max, though. Him and Leclerc are going to have some epic battles this year.

The real loser in the whole pitting thing was Perez, great start, great pace and then the safety car timing meant other ahead of him got a free pit stop. Desperately unlucky.

Absolutely, that said you're always running the risk of getting done over when you pit when there still hasn't been a safety car on a track like Jeddah - especially with the likes of Latifi still on track. I wouldn't trust that guy to drive me to the shops let alone race at 200mph

Don't think they will be. This massive porpoising issue is not one that can be fixed in simulation therefore the whole car would need to be re-engineered from scratch which isn't going to happen.

Wasn’t the porpoising an issue for all the teams during testing though? Seems like Ferrari and Red Bull amongst others found a solution for it whilst Mercedes have struggled

Because theirs was (from what I have read), for reasons unknown is far worse than anyone else's. I think George Russell was quoted as saying it was almost undrivable at one point. Clearly tinkering with downforce has improved this for Mercedes (and others) but the issue appears to still be a major one. To be fair they are not far off competing but the problem is there is no quick fix and by the time they do find a working solution the title and constructors championship may be long gone.

Hamilton reckons they were down on power as well but might just be typical Hamilton as I'm not sure how you'd know with a car that can barely stay on the track.

McLaren, Aston and Williams all struggling too, the bottom 6 finishers in Bahrain with only 2 making it into Q2; Norris got a creditable 7th in SA, but otherwise the bottom 3 finishers with 2 DNF.

Yeah, they've all been struggling with aerodynamics as well and the Williams might be one of the worst cars of all time.

It’s a real shame Mercedes aren’t on the same level as the Ferraris and Red Bulls at the moment, the more even cars going for it, the better the spectacle.
It’s looking like a good season though👍

Well here we go in Aussie. Hoping for a good race.
That Ferrari is just too quick, great to seem them back at the front, Red Bull don't have the reliability this season, not sure if they're turning it all the way up and killing it trying to keep up with the Ferraris?

Merc have played a bit of a blinder here, their car is more reliable, just slow!

Excellent day for Mercedes and good weekend for McLaren.

Red Bull have some real reliability issues it seems. Only strange thing was Hamilton appearing to ease off in the final laps against Russell.

The Mecedes is slow in qualifying and early in races, but seems to be better on the medium tyres. Perez flew past Hamilton and got three seconds clear and his tyres went and Hamilton caught him and seemed to be able to keep consistant lap times. Mercedes also seemed to have a lot less bouncing than they had in previous races and practice. Hopefully they have got some improvement yhat allows them to be more competitive. Will be great if 3 or 4 teams get similar speed cars. Massive improvement for viewing that cars can travel behind each other ok.

I think the Merc has a fundamental design flaw, it still looks borderline impossible to drive, they're not winning anything this season.

Can't see anyone beating the Ferarri car right now, Charles is driving fantastically well and quickly. It'll be at a canter at this rate.

These cars ain't looking too good on their debuts in the wet today...

Quali this afternoon, sprint race tomorrow and GP on Sunday. Could be a cracker if the rain plays a part.

Nice to see Max beat the Ferrari of Leclerc today in the sprint race at Emilia Romagna circuit and sits on pole position for tomorrows main event.

Meanwhile Hamilton chugs home in 14th place 3 places behind his Mercedes team mate George Russell. 😮
