Thatched in a Poulton was a good pint of Boddies alsoBest pint of Boddies anywhere
What, The Vic’s prices were as cheapest around! You must have asked for crisps as well for it to be over a tenner!
Well it was dead good when I was in my prime.Only time I’ve been upstairs was for funerals or a party on occasion!
I said you were racist last time but we agreed to disagree. And it's your choice, not my problem as long as we don't move next door to you. You can hold whatever opinions you want Jaffa and live wherever you want. Your racism in itself doesn't make you a terrible person, just narrow minded possibly. Just my opinion, I wasn't ranting, thought you might see the humour in it. Obviously not, sorry for upsetting you. Some joke.
Why don’t you just come out and say you think I’m a racist just because I can pick and choose who I want to live next door to?
I’m a grown man and I’m used to it now.
Shame only you can turn a thread about old pubs on the Fylde coast into racist rant completely off topic so well done for that.
Lose the high & mighty approach. I wouldn't have wanted Johnny foreigner moving next door to me years ago. But I've learnt to take people at face value & treat everyone an equal, hopefully working & contributing to the Fylde Coast pot. If others have doubts about whether their neighbours actually do that then they are more than entitled to express views along those lines.I said you were racist last time but we agreed to disagree. You haven’t upset me trust me.I said you were racist last time but we agreed to disagree. And it's your choice, not my problem as long as we don't move next door to you. Like I said, I just saw an opportunity for a bit of humour, sorry it fell flat and glad you aren't bothered by it.You haven’t upset me trust me.
Like I said I’m just surprised you’ve brought this up again on a thread about old Fylde coast old pubs.
I think the Talbot was originally a Whitbread pub in the 1970s.On reflecion it was defo a Thwaites pub. Maybe they also sold one or both of castle eden or trophy. If not, where on earth did i consume those?
That's what I always thought.Funny how The Barn just seemed to be the vaults of the Bull or visa versa but they were named as distinctly 2 separate pubs?
I remember both the Old Fairhaven and the first days of the New Fairhaven. The last night of the old victorian-built hotel was notorious, as everyone ripped the interior apart to take home souvenirs (doorhandles, coat hooks, the lot!). The new Fairhaven became two very distinctly different environments, with a posh, G&T set, main lounge for the middle-aged and the much smaller tap room where us lads used to go.It was developed in the 70s, new owners no doubt, and became a crappy family pub type of thing. To be avoided. I was always gutted i missed out narrowly on the old fairhaven, and the Bodds it sold. My bodds drinking was done in the vic and the county. The Lytham pubs all got done up in the 80s, and ruined, in my opinion! A whole sort of thatcher yuppy culture took over, so I upped sticks and moved to London! Plenty of choice. Then on to manchester.
Ellis used to live in the Club's house on Ansdell Rd S. I think OO sold it off. He was often in The County sometimes with Paul Stewart.I bought my very first pint of Bods in the vaults at the old Fairhaven from Edna the hunchback barmaid, it was 12p!! Cracking old pub and ruined by the new build although Sam Ellis used to drink in there every night, I loved the Vic too
The County's original name was the "The County and Commercial Hotel". By its name, implying accommodation for commercial travellers.Queens, County, Ship & Royal definitely built primarily as hotels. Hansom Cab presumably the same. Got the info from the FB page called Lytham's Past.
Anyone remember The Buccaneer doing something like Bods for 4p a pint for a week as a throwback to a year gone by?Funny how The Barn just seemed to be the vaults of the Bull or visa versa but they were named as distinctly 2 separate pubs?
or the Top Club or Christ the KingWhy has nobody mentioned the Dinmore
Me & a mate somehow joined the Christ the King footie team around 1980. Met in the club for pre match coffee & team talk then we were presented with CTK tracksuits Grabbed back of us when they saw how we playedor the Top Club or Christ the King
Remember the Mardi doing a 60's night, music plus ale at 6p a pint. Fighting yesAnyone remember The Buccaneer doing something like Bods for 4p a pint for a week as a throwback to a year gone by?
Or the original Galleonor the Top Club or Christ the King
Glad to hear it’s still standing, what galaxy had you been visiting?Blimey, I used to go there with my mates, I went in when I came back home in 2915 and it was dire in there.
Loved the Winny back in the day , perfect downstairs for a group of lads when we 17,18 ish , two pool tables, pinball , the gents and Pete the landlord could turn the duke box up - great daysLooks like the Winmarith/Burlington/Spen Dyke has finally expired after years of decline. Shame as it was a thriving busy place back in the late 70/80s. Times have changed & the Arnold under aged element have also now gone. There was still quite a few going in even in the 90s but the place was going down hill. Pub culture has changed & this place looks destined for another use or demolition. It's a big place spread over 4 floors, last time I saw it packed was when they probably illegally showed the Blackpool games on many screens when we were in the Premier league & they even had a van in the car park with a screen at the back. Sadly over the last 5 years when I've occasionally popped in for a swift one on my way home from the matches there've been more staff than customers, they seemed to try during Covid with outside seating, but after that it was quiet inside. So I'm not surprised it's closed.
He’s Dr.Who surelyGlad to hear it’s still standing, what galaxy had you been visiting?
Permanent ban, ridiculousThey can have them, but they have to be on silent and have to be in a pocket or bag so they can't be seen. You can't even have it out to text someone back or read if you're on your own. I get having them on silent, but not even being able to read the news whilst having a quiet pint is too far, then getting a permanent ban if you do.
I remember that. The County's original name was the "The County and Commercial Hotel". By its name, implying accommodation for commercial travellers.
I DJ'ed there once and the next morning it was raided by police with guns and drugs found. This is a very nostalgic thread for me as I was DJ at about a dozen places mentioned. I wonder if it was was something I said :(Why has nobody mentioned the Dinmore
Had some great lock ins with Ken. Great pub sadly missedThe Burn Naze. A Souvenir Bully behind the back bar, bad karaoke, laughs. Ken the landlord's dog showering us with blood when we were getting changed for football under the regime of master football impressario Frank Whelan, because someone had trapped its tail in the door the night before and the bandage was slipping off. Ken's Mrs. Old school.
It was my local in the early 90s as well.I lived in Burn Naze early 90s. Ken used to do a bit of food.......Barnsley chop, peas and mash was my favorite....but it was very limited.......to just that.
Talbot was Whitbreads In the late 80s early 90s.I think the Talbot was originally a Whitbread pub in the 1970s.
Remember playing footy against the County and Commercial who at the time were a decent Sunday team and they switched the KO time to the afternoon on Park View, how we beat them that day remains a mystery as we were all in the pub from 12The County's original name was the "The County and Commercial Hotel". By its name, implying accommodation for commercial travellers.
One of our mates regular drove so we got about during the week. We went there & my mate was on the dance floor when someone threw an empty can. He booted it & it hit someone. The person in question must have been a prominent local. Queue scuffle, the 4/5 of us legged it to the getaway mobile & then ensued a car chase of about 4 motors all along Clifton Drive to Blackpool. Think it was something like a Tuesday nightThe Louisiana Belle , or just The Belle , inside The Grand in St Annes. Loved it in there from early70s to early 80s . Happy days .
I remember a 16/17 year old me drinking tequila in Scrooges. Subsequently spent the rest of the evening on the piss covered floor in a toilet cubicle spewing up. When I finally came round, the place was closed and in darkness. Fortunately, I managed to unlock the bottom door and make my escape.Always gutted when I come back from Manchester and see the tiny, unused car park that they replaced Scrooges with. What an absolute waste.
Many a Thursday night spent in there. The older generation remember it as a wine bar but it was the indie music bar for me when I was going!
Did you work at the Taps as well after?Talbot was Whitbreads In the late 80s early 90s.
I worked for them at the time
no. I worked for Whitbread in Blackpool. I knew all the landlords and cellar men as we would lend each other bits and bobs occasionally and some of the landlords would visit each others pubs on their days off.Did you work at the Taps as well after?
Thanks for the reply. I thought I might have known you.no. I worked for Whitbread in Blackpool. I knew all the landlords and cellar men as we would lend each other bits and bobs occasionally and some of the landlords would visit each others pubs on their days off.
I reckon that 95% of people wouldn't have a clue where the Durban was, a bit like that pub in St.Annes the Links, both tucked away off the beaten track.Worth mentioning the Durban in Cleveleys.
Some great nights in there including “Grab a Granny night”
It probably involved Tony Virco (RIP), he was the main boy back then in St. Annes. One of our mates regular drove so we got about during the week. We went there & my mate was on the dance floor when someone threw an empty can. He booted it & it hit someone. The person in question must have been a prominent local. Possibly Raging. Truth be known when they attacked us on foot one lad was way ahead of his mates. I said stop the car, jumped out & layed in. He soon legged it back & then the car chaseIt probably involved Tony Virco (RIP), he was the main boy back then in St. Annes.
I had exctly the same happen to me in the Blue Room. I had more tokens than everyone else combined. Thanks MimI seem to think Thwaites.
The Talbot was good. I was a particular favourite of the female staff who worked there so when there was a promotion on for an auction you'd get tokens with every purchase. These kind girls would collect all tokens not given out and hand them to me. Come auction time, guess who won the race for the Sega Mega drive with some games
Still got it set up with Sonic loaded.
