Glastonbury Thread 2023

I went to the homecoming gig of the Monkeys in Sheffield two weeks ago. We unfortunately were a bit disappointed šŸ„²

In the past they were raw and really reacted to the crowd, got involved and equally played numbers that would get everyone going.

This time it was all a bit Hollywood? They were slick, musically tight but no interaction at all barring a quick ā€œhello Sheffieldā€. Their set was heavily ballad and smooth - great to listen to if youā€™re sat around with friends but everyone wanted blockbuster jump around tunes.

It didnā€™t help either that the Hives supporting them were awesome and I think did more crowd surfing than songs šŸ˜‚
I know what you mean. Singing in his Sheffield accent when they burst on the scene was just right. Whatever people say I am, that's what I'm not. What an album. The music is great but what's all this mid Atlantic shite?

Apparently Tony Wilson once said, Alex Turners Sheffield accent is so thick it could cut steel!

I met Tony Wilson years ago at a do in Liverpool. Lovely bloke who was responsible for helping form most of my musical allegiances. Wonder what he'd make of that performance?
Probably not a lot, as you say a lovely guy, spoke to him once by chance in the Lowry many moons a go. ā€˜So it goesā€™

Arctic Monkeys not quite on it, but love the last album regardless of reviews. Alex Turner is possibly the best English lyricist of the last 10-15 years.
He is, thatā€™s why itā€™s such a shame he abandoned most of those great songs tonight. Most underwhelming headline set I can remember, really bad

One of my sisters ā€œlames to fameā€ was that she once poured a drink over Tony Wilsonā€™s head when he was acting like a Cnut at the bar of the Norbreck Castle Hotel! Had a happy ending though when he apologised and gave her a tenner - circa late 70ā€™s! šŸ˜ƒ

Thought it was just me because by 10.30 I'd had a couple of beers settled down for Artic Monkeys and went to bed scratching my head and bored as hell.

Now I know reading here it wasn't the beer they where crap.

First 3 albums are amazing then the others just the odd good one here and there
I read somewhere they where planning the new album to be back to upbeat songs but then lockdown hit and it come out like that,

Itā€™s almost exactly the same set list as I saw Sheffield.

The new album is musically talented but when youā€™re watching live you want belting anthems to bop about too. It was all a bit Brian Ferry at times with Chicago lounge singer thrown in.

The crowd become totally detached.

Still an amazing lyricist

My last comment on Monkeys (I promise šŸ˜)

The new album is a whole album of making lurvvvvve music to candlelight - heā€™s still the best lyricist of this generation.

Theyā€™d be better doing the new stuff at the start of the gig to slow everyone down and then finish on 4 to 8 (depending on set size) of the banging classics

As you said earlier though Chunks he just didnā€™t engage or connect with the crowd either. Which makes a huge difference.

He seemed disinterested, or something.

I read a couple of posts on here slagging Dave Grohl off. I know who's charisma I'd rather have as a front man. Turner was awful last night. Didn't look interested and certainly didn't engage with the crowd. Grohl was like a kid in a sweet shop. Yes he's cheesey but he's a great front man who always gets the crowd involved.

Because Grohl understands Glasto they ain't your fans in the crowd and haven't paid to come and see you something AM forgot about last night.

I'm not a Monkeys fan but tried watching last night. They didn't win me over.
Seems to be a case of falling in love with himself.

As Iā€™m house/dog sitting this weekend, Iā€™ve had Glastonbury on (almost) all day. Looked forward to Foo F but that was not their best. Artics do nothing for my taste buds. Plenty of snippets. Some Iā€™ll look out for.
500 there from the BBC? Ok, ok theyā€™re working but having the ā€œwoke universityā€ babbling version of presentation sends me the garden for dog wrestling.
Got a feeling Guns & Roses will wipe the floor with yesterdays fare.
At least, Iā€™m looking forward to Cat Stevens, Manics, Blondie and the great showman - Elton.

Believe it or not that's the first Arctic monkeys music I've ever (knowingly) heard. I recognise a couple of the song titles, but that's about it.

I guess you can't listen to everything....

So I decided to watch the full thing with interest. Have to say I quite enjoyed it.

Strange way to present yourselves mind.

So to read all your observations about how bad it was last night is also interesting, because I've nothing to compare it to. I'll do some digging and listen to earlier stuff.

Never been to Glastonbury nor any festival actually. I enjoyed Fred seemed a genuine guy and I also enjoyed Cverches who put on a good show. Stumbled across Flo had no idea who the girl band were but was really impressed. Tight group.

Looking forward to the Lathams today at 1pm on the other stage

Havenā€™t watched yet but Turner apparently had laryngitis?

Much prefer him as a singer and songwriter. Up there with Lennon/McCartney in my opinion.

Couple of Foo Fighters tracks I like but never really listened to a full album.

Did anyone catch the set by Chvches? They were ** ace imo.
Missed them off my list too, they are ace. Monkeys were really disappointing, I think they are one of those bands that I prefer to listen to at home and not live, whereas it's the opposite for the Foo's and Sparks are ** mint!

I canā€™t watch it, itā€™s the same sold and old lauded by a load of bellends

Whatever happened to exciting innovative music getting some air time? Itā€™s out there but you wont see it on the BBC wank coverage for plebs

He is a bit shouty and sweaty though. For long-haired old man meat and potatoes rawk itā€™ll often be difficult to out do Lemmy.

Nice to see Lathums working their way towards the Pyramid one day. Just think, they were playing the Waterloo before lockdown.

I like Grohl, think heā€™s a top performer šŸ‘Œ

If you listen to all their albums up to and including AM in 2013 there is some cracking stuff.

I'll disagree with you there and say Coldplay are bigger. Headlined it more and have pretty much dominated the world moreArctic Monkeys haven't done quite ad well. Doesn't make them better mind but I don't think you're correct with your
You're definitely right that Coldplay are bigger and have had more mainstream commercial success, I just meant in terms of a new band coming along and having a cultural impact. I don't think there has been one since the Arctic Monkeys, their debut is still the fastest selling debut album in British history, they pipped Definitely Maybe to that accolade - that'll probably never be beaten now with Spotify and all that.

Coldplay were about before AM, and they've basically become a pop band. AM have gone the complete opposite route, they release an album every 5 years now and those albums are pretty far away from pop music and even their old stuff!

Itā€™s too slow, theyā€™re my favourite ever band, but lounge music isnā€™t suited to headlining a festival
I saw them on this tour, I'm a huge fan and I was incredibly disappointed. The crowd was woeful even when they played the older stuff, I think they nullify any energy by slowing everything down and singing the songs differently so people can't sing along.

They're up there as one of my all time favourites, I knew every word to almost every song they did but I doubt I'd go see them again unless there is a shift in their live performances energy.

Bit contradictory if you read it back .. The other comments support what i said, but it is only my opinion. They are definitely not a headliner act . Sorry.
Well if they're good enough is subjective, I'd agree on this tour the way they do the songs isn't energetic or crowd pleasing enough to be a headline act - I wasn't impressed when I saw them and I'm verging on a super fan.

Objectively they are big enough though, record sales, awards, stadium shows, countless headline slots at festivals all over. They've just got it wrong this tour with the energy levels, all of Oasis's Glastonbury performances have been shite but they're still objectively big enough to do it at any point they want.

It is strange they've forgot that, they even addressed in 2013 that they improved their Glastonbury performance because they'd attended the festival (something they hadn't done the first time they played) and they then knew what it was all about.

The fact he changes the way he sings and all that, and changes the tempo of his tunes says to me its all a bit self serving. I think he's got a bit too stuck up his own arse unfortunately!

Totally agree.

Its been coming for a while though and itā€™s a real shame.

Could the same not be said of Bowie?
Turner clearly takes on personas for different albums, something Bowie did.
Artists are exactly that, they make art, change and develop. Iā€™m actually impressed that they have t just tried to churn out ā€˜look good on the dance floorā€™ songs for every album, and theyā€™ve pushed themselves to produce music that has a bit more to it.
I thought he was pretty cool last night, even though the set wasnā€™t what perhaps the audience wanted. I like Dave Grohl, but Foo Fighters barring the odd really good song are ideal for headlining festivals, songs everyone knows that all sound similar at a headbanging speed, but not a band Iā€™m bothered about seeing.

Will be watching plenty of it ver the weekend whilst on the Norfolk coast.

Arctic Monkeys, Loyle Carner, War against Drugs, Queensof the Stone Age, Unthanks, Gabrielā€™s, Barrington Levy, Sniff n the Tears, Glen Hansard and The Damned for me

Just spotted that BBC4, Sunday at 9pm, has a one hour slot featuring Barrington Levy and Candi Staton (who has a tremendous back catalogue, much much more than just Young Hearts Run Free).

Edit - Rumour has it that the wonderful Pretenders (Park stage tonight, 7.45) will be joined by Johnny Marr and Dave Grohl.

Shame on now. Absolutely having it.

Proper thrash punk at times. Big fan of stuff like this; very Idols-esque. Proper angry love it.

Just watched the Billy Nomates set to see why she was getting pelters online. Not my cup of tea but hardly the worst Iā€be ever heard.

Enjoyed the Generation Sex set
