Grimshaw

He could have done better but he’s made some top saves especially at Fulham so a slight mistake where he maybe could have done abit better doesn’t mean he should be dropped it’s a tough position.

I'm absolutely certain that Dan Grimshaw being the excellent young but still relatively inexperienced keeper that he is will be desperately disappointed that he didn't get a hand to Dembele's shot.
If he had he could have added it to his list of last minute point earning saves.
It's certainly not the time to drop him.
Remember how much we all love Bowler now even though his game is littered with mistakes.
Dan made one.

I noticed Grimshaw came out late for the second half and then on a couple of occasions went to the touch line for some kind of Liquid…but not water by the look of it….I just wondered and said to my friend next to me if he might have had some kind of stomach bug.
Anyway you would expect the forward to score in the position he found himself in and he did unfortunately.
Grimshaw can’t be blamed for either goal.
Like everyone else I was absolutely gutted at the end but my rage was directed at the incompetent officials, who seemed intent on finding a way to give them maximum advantage, not at any of the players who gave everything.

Any keeper beaten at his near post shouldn’t be happy about it.

That mistake for the 2nd goal is the only error I can recall from Grimshaw. Poor OP plus Maxwell is injured. Grimshaw has good potential and has performed well.
Been outstanding

First was a lucky deflection setting up their guy perfectly and second should have been cleared earlier
We were settling for a deserved point and got caught out

How much have they spent too

Very unlucky but great game really enjoyed it apart from the result

This is the challenge us GK's face, one mistake and the executioner comes out. Grimshaw has been outstanding since Maxi's injury and after Maxi's unbelievable season in L1 I never thought I would be saying this but Maxi will do well to regain his spot as first choice GK if Grimshaw continues his level of performance. What people forget is the lapses in judgement and mistakes by the outfield players for the opposition to get in the positions such as Dembele did to score. We are very lucky to have the choice of 3 GK's with the qualities of Grimshaw, Maxi and Moore. UTMP 🧡

Really harsh to blame Grimshaw tbh. Hes just stabbed it home from close range. Absolutely no blame should be attached to him for that.

To answer my own question, I don’t think he should be dropped even if Maxi was fit. But when a keepers beaten at the near post there has to be some blame attached.

For people of my vintage, being beaten on your near post is referred to as "The Wilson Gap," after Bob Wilson conceded a similar goal against Steve Heighway in the 1971 FA Cup Final (Arsenal v Liverpool).
Clearly it was not DGs best moment of the game but which player never makes mistakes? He has been a massive reason for our success in recent weeks and in my opinion must retain his place even when Maxi is fit. We are very fortunate to have two such quality keepers.

We shouldn't be even talking about it he has been that good. Remember there was a big net for him to try and cover

Isn't this the OP the guy who consistently fails to check out with a double 7 or double 11 at BASIL darts nights?

Its ok calling people out for their weaknesses in sport, but folk need to put their own house in order first.

Mind you on this thread he's gone for the bull and notched up a reasonable score.

As a consistent scorer I rarely leave myself a double 7 or 11. Double 1 however...

He may have gone to ground to soon, if thats an error its the first one he has made. For me he stays as our number one

OBviously a WUM.There can be no other explanation.

I did post elsewhere that he did get his positioning slightly wrong for their second and paid the price but he is young and will learn from that and has been outstanding for us and I am sure has a very good future ahead of him. He`s been a really good signing for us.

You've picked the right word, potential. The man's still young and wil learn. The coaching staff will go over that one with him so that he knows what to do in future. I don't mind the criticism - it's deserved - but he shouldn't be dropped because of one mistake in an otherwise good performance.

Mods... surely this poster deserves blocking... we don't need any more WUMs on this forum.
I'd suggest straighters has been posting on here for many years more than you. If you don't get or understand his style it's probably you who deserves blocking for your ignorance. Straiters is up there as one of the best posters on here with a whole different variety of posts and not all a wind up. So just relax and enjoy his style.

From Kasper Schmeichel:
“It’s a myth. Something I have never understood. One day someone just came up with it and said a goalkeeper should never be beaten at their near post.

Anyone who has played in goal knows it’s a huge area and you try to cover the whole goal. You can’t try and cover the whole goal and the guarantee the ball won’t go in at the near post if it’s a great shot. Near post, far post, you try to cover it all and you’re not happy if it goes in anywhere.”

From Kasper Schmeichel:
that's fair enough and probably true but it wasn't a great shot, it pretty much crawled in at the near post. For me, Grimshaw would have been better to try and force Dembele to go across goal where he could even drag it wide. Similar one in the first half where Bowler was forced to go across goal and their keeper made a good save pushing it around the post.
All that said, Grimshaw is playing really well and we shouldn't be overly critical or making out of a molehill about it.

the near post thing is an old axiom from the old days where lefties played on the left side, and righties on the right and if they shoot aiming for far post the ball was highly probable to go wide, so gk had to only guard near post.
It still stand for bland shots on the near post for me, wich was the case in the second goal. But there were 2 players in front of grimshaw that could also recieve a pass and score.
C'mon Grimmy continue to show what you can do!

No, it wasn't a great shot at all. And he will be disappointed with it I'm sure.

I just always think of that quote whenever anyone says the "goalies should never be beaten at their near post" thing.

But I agree, Grimshaw has been great. And he will only get better. But all goalkeepers let in soft goals sometimes.
