It's a depressing old world isn't it?
They've already started, air strikes on the Yemen capital and another city in Yemen that is a Houthi stronghold.Yep. Sounds like there will be a military strike in the next few hours.

Hope it keeps a ‘lid’ on things and hampers the Houthi rebels and doesn’t kick off a much bigger regional conflict.
That's the big risk though isn't it? What with Covid and war in Ukraine and now the Israeli/Palestine war and now this it just never seems to ease off. We have the Chinese chomping at the bit to take Taiwan and a nutter in charge of North Korea!! Oh happy days!
Chances are there'll be a nutter in charge of the US again before this year is out, one who'll happily throw Ukraine and Taiwan to the wolves while openly encouraging armed conflict in his own country. That's the big risk though isn't it? It’s depressing, yet at the same time comical, that we can police the Red Sea but not the English Channel. It's a depressing old world isn't it?

I remember the days when Thatcher and co were in town and the Navy had a warship off the coast same when in Brighton. What good could they have done, went on for a few years the terrorist stuff when a weeks worth of bombing would have been enough.Air strikes on migrant camps in Calais would really go down a treat..
Interesting comparisonIt’s depressing, yet at the same time comical, that we can police the Red Sea but not the English Channel.
Because the people coming across in small boats are small fry who serve to be a political distraction for politicians to chuck bones to the bigoted dimwits. Thankfully the post office had currently filled that void hence the Rwanda plan has been filed to the back of the queue along with 50p LeeIt’s depressing, yet at the same time comical, that we can police the Red Sea but not the English Channel.
They are responsible for all this that’s going on in the Middle East right now they backed and supplied weapons and planning to Hamas for the 07/10 massacres and they are supplying the Houthi rebels with these drones. Its a shame we dont bomb strategic sites in Iran if they are responsible.
30p Lee, if you please, Shandy. Don`t inflate his value...Thankfully the post office had currently filled that void hence the Rwanda plan has been filed to the back of the queue along with 50p Lee

Happy New Year!

Nice to see some impressively thoughtful posts already. It is indeed a "shame that we can`t bomb Iran", as that would be really interesting idea and could end really well...
The same nutter who'll happily throw NATO under a bus.Chances are there'll be a nutter in charge of the US again before this year is out, one who'll happily throw Ukraine and Taiwan to the wolves while openly encouraging armed conflict in his own country.
Happy New Year!
I'm surprised they didn't seek Parliamentary approval before the bombing.Be interesting to see if this escalates further whether other NATO countries will get involved who are dependent on the Red Sea / Suez Canal for the shipment of their goods. No doubt there will be another demonstration on the streets of London this weekend against the UKs involvement in these air strikes!
Think they are still in recess aren’t they for Christmas/New year break? pretty sure they return next Monday.I'm surprised they didn't seek Parliamentary approval before the bombing.
It would almost certainly have been approved. As it is, it makes us look somewhat undemocratic.
I didn't realise that. Quite a decent effort.Think they are still in recess aren’t they for Christmas/New year break? pretty sure they return next Monday.
To be fair to Sunak he did get together the defence Secretary, the shadow defence Secretary, Keir Starmer (by video link) and Lyndsey Hoyle.
I didn't realise that. Quite a decent effort.
Explains why some Lib Dem was bleating about not being informed on the radio this morning.
He spoke to the people who matter, probably on military advice not to let the enemy know.
If Avftt ruled the world
Because Putin has told him to.The same nutter who'll happily throw NATO under a bus.
If this site ruled the world Wing Commander Dobbie would be leading the bombing missions. If Avftt ruled the world
The problem is Wiz (and your right) is that we couldn’t afford to allow the Houthi's to start moving their capabilities around and a decision needed to be taken immediately. This has probably been in the planning stages for several weeks whilst all the support infrastructure etc was in place before last nights strike. The Houthi’s crossed a big red line when they started to attack our warships and we shouldn’t stand back and allow pirates and terrorists in preventing shipping through the Red Sea / Suz Canal.I'm surprised they didn't seek Parliamentary approval before the bombing.

Yep, we wouldn't want squadron leader Critch taking a flight out, flying towards there before getting half-way, zig-zagging back and forth in a holding pattern, them returning to base having secured the majority of possession of the air space. If this site ruled the world Wing Commander Dobbie would be leading the bombing missions.
I believe so. There was no opposition from Russia or China. Much as the Russians might side with Iran (who supply the weapons), they aren't keen on armed piracy against commercial shipping.I presume these airstrikes were carried out under a UN mandate?
It is bound to escalate - next step is for the Houthis to send in the Blowfish - worrying times.Hope it keeps a ‘lid’ on things and hampers the Houthi rebels and doesn’t kick off a much bigger regional conflict.
I get that. Piracy can't be allowed, but Parliamentary approval would prevent the inevitable protests against the lack of process. The problem is Wiz (and your right) is that we couldn’t afford to allow the Houthi's to start moving their capabilities around and a decision needed to be taken immediately. I think the Russians are all for this, as they are the Gaza conflict, because it deflects attention and indeed, funding from the Ukraine.I believe so. There was no opposition from Russia or Chiba. Why would someone feel the need to protest about this action?I get that. Piracy can't be allowed, but Parliamentary approval would prevent the inevitable protests against the lack of process.
Because of the lack of transparency. We can't enter conflicts without Parliamentary approval. It's Sunak invoking Maggie in 1982, but even she went to Parliament first. Why would someone feel the need to protest about this action?
I'm fine with it and the country needed to act quickly and doesn't actually need to get Parliamentary approvalBecause of the lack of transparency. We can't enter conflicts without Parliamentary approval. It's Sunak invoking Maggie in 1982, but even she went to Parliament first.
So there is a Nuclear warhead heading to the UK, or our assets are being attacked in the Red Sea and we have no idea if more on the way.Because of the lack of transparency. We can't enter conflicts without Parliamentary approval. It's Sunak invoking Maggie in 1982, but even she went to Parliament first.

Completely different scenario. We've gone in because America has, as always. So there is a Nuclear warhead heading to the UK, or our assets are being attacked in the Red Sea and we have no idea if more on the way.
Do you think the PM should wait for Parliament to approve retaliation or defence of the realm?
…or the PM could lie just to get his way (now who was that?)
Reality is military decisions cannot always wait and can need immediate or quick action.
So all this, let’s go get permission first - is absolute bollox - the PM has the power and permission already.
They fired missiles at our ship and sent drones to attack it.Completely different scenario. We've gone in because America has, as always.
They've attacked plenty of other nations' ships too, but its always us who pile in first. They fired missiles at our ship and sent drones to attack it.
They did the same to US ships.
We went in together as they attacked us both.
It was not just the US and UK who supported it, we obviously had the assets in the region to do something - plus they shot at us!They've attacked plenty of other nations' ships too, but it’s always us who pile in first.
I'm not doubting something needs to be done, but once again we're going to be dragged into yet another conflict, thinking we've still got an Empire. It was not just the US and UK who supported it, we obviously had the assets in the region to do something - plus they shot at us!
…or are you not aware of that?
You do get that shipping around the world needs to be safe - otherwise you exasperate the domestic problems at home (and everywhere else for that matter).I'm not doubting something needs to be done, but once again we're going to be dragged into yet another conflict, thinking we've still got an Empire.
Meanwhile we have millions at home surviving through the use of foodbanks. We always find the money to fire off weaponry costing hundreds of thousands a shot but plead poverty and cut benefits when it suits.
Questioning priorities, that's all.
But there wasn't a nuclear weapon, and the laws of the Land give parliament supremacy. This was not some minor arrest of a boat, this was bombing which may or may not have hit its intended target, and may or may not have killed innocent people. There was no immediate threat to UK citizens. So there is a Nuclear warhead heading to the UK, or our assets are being attacked in the Red Sea and we have no idea if more on the way.

The PM has the power to respond without Parliament….do you not understand that? But there wasn't a nuclear weapon, and the laws of the Land give parliament supremacy. The concept of democracy seems to be lost in the UK today
