How Fascism Starts

20th Century Fascism was built around the cult of the individual: Mussolini, Hitler, Franco. Yesterday I watched Boris Johnson deliver a resignation speech in which he blamed his demise on the backbenchers of the Conservative Party. He went on to say that he had been determined to stay in power for the 14 million people who had voted for him in the 2019 GE. So, it was him and nobody but him. His personality had won over the voters and nothing else. Leave aside the electorate's concerns about Corbyn. Leave aside the fact that the Tories attracted all of the Brexit vote. No, it was Boris and Boris alone.

And that, dear posters is how fascism starts. The cult of the individual. The needy politicians who crowd round him for high office in the knowledge that he is their only hope: Raab, Rees-Mogg, Dorries, Patel. Their resultant policies of trying to wreck the BBC and Channel 4 because they weren't 'on message.' Sending asylum seekers to Rwanda - the useless Priti Patel. Where's Heinrich Himmler when you need him.
Reducing the right to protest - surely Dr. Goebbels would be a better bet to see that through, surely?
You think I'm being OTT? Maybe. But this is how fascism starts. I saw people in Wyre on the telly saying they weren't interested in the Conservative Party, that it was Boris they were voting for. Mein Volk mein Reich, Mein Boris?

You know I am come on here because it is a football supporters website…I am sick of all the political shite, including what you have just posted,so that’s me off here for good.

Spot on 1966. I would argue that we are already in proto-fascist state. Deportations of "undesirables", a complicit press casting the judiciary as enemies of the people, suppression of the right to protest, etc, etc. And don't believe it couldn't happen here-pre-1939, the Mail was praising the brownshirts, members of the establishment from the royal family downwards were sympathetic to Hitler and his aims. We have a Tory party that believes it has a right to rule and that any opposition is unpatriotic. Be afraid

No I don’t think you are being OTT. We’re living in very worrying times.

And how it ended?

The guy is going to be a back bench MP in 3 months, two months of it on holiday.

Seriously, we are a million miles away from a fascist state, no matter how many times you try to draw parallels from history.

Honestly, we don't have to draw parallels with 70 years ago; just look 3000 miles east, where an actual fascist is putting politicians in jail for disagreeing with his decision to go to war.

It's a bit distasteful at a time when thousands of people in Ukraine are being murdered by a fascist regime to compare the two.

It also plays right into the hands of those who wish to denigrate those who oppose the current government as basically bonkers.

Calm down. I'm not at all saying that's where we're heading. I'm saying that's the seed from which these things start.

I am calm, completely.

So a bloke who was
chosen to stand as the Conservative Party representative in his constituency,
gets elected by the majority of said constituents, gets elected by other elected MP's (forming the majority and therefore are in power) and
wins an election by the members of the Conservative Party to become their Leader and as a result Prime Minister is the birth of fascism?

Sounds more like a triumph of democracy

In the same way that his removal was.

Not sure fascism is worthy of being mentioned.

Hitler was elected but the German constitution was subverted to enable what followed. That almost happened in the USA. Complacency is the biggest enemy of democracy.

Suppression of opposition and protest. The new laws about 'noisy protest' would have seen the Judgement Day marches illegal.

Compliant press. Nearly all the papers were huge fans of Boris up until a couple of weeks ago, while constantly denigrating any form of opposition

Deporting people to Rwanda. FFS.

Found to have broken Parliamentary rules so changed the rules.

Ignored cronies' deep failings yet jumped all over any suggestion of misdoings outwith the inner circle

Obviously we're not yet a fascist state, but this is how they all start.

But it hasn't here and was never going to.

At a time when we are witnessing what a fascist state actually is I can't believe we have people trying to extrapolate Conservative Party Policy to fascism.

We have elections at a local, regional and national level and can vote for people to represent us on a pretty regular basis.

We still have an independent judiciary which does it's job.

And a Parliament which works pretty effectively (as we've seen this week).

Being frank; the implication of fascism is absolute bollocks and does the left no good at best and more than likely; harm.

The season starts at the end of this month... literally only days... just hold on to reality a little longer... you can do it.... nobody’s out to get you ... I promise 👍😁

No patronising intended but I had you down as a very thoughtful poster. You've certainly made me think on other posts. Here, I don't think you're going beyond Party politics.

Obviously we're not yet a fascist state, but this is how they all start.

Oil protestors haven't been jailed, neither have the Bristolians causing vandalism.

We have a free press, including the Morning Star and the BBC. In fact there's been wall to wall coverage of the PM's problems. And they've all covered it.

A policy designed to stop people risking their lives through people trafficking? Rwanda is safe and to suggest otherwise whiffs of racism.

He tried to change the rules, but Parliament said no.

The final point is a personality trait and it's common amongst politicians. Let's have a look at what's going on Scotland with the SNP protecting their own. It's not an exclusively Conservative Party issue.

Honestly, there's enough to go at without clutching at fascism.

The people of this country are pretty effective at choosing the best people to represent them at any given time; and come the next election, things might change depending how the next government deal with all the issues taking place.

Rwanda is that safe we took over 700 asylum seekers from there. Its a one party state.

The law has been changed since the Bristol situation.

It might well be Wiz but there are checks and balances in this country, as seen, rather belatedly, this week

This site needs a good bleaching with Domestos ooh so much muck in here😜😂

You're the one suggesting that an elected leader of this country could have turned us into a fascist state.

I just completely and utterly disagree.

In the same way Corbyn wouldn't have created a Marxist one.

I have great faith in the people and institutions of our country to ensure that we never end up in the places you allude to.

And FWIW, I'm meeting Lisa Nandy MP in Darlington in a couple of weeks to discuss Levelling Up (should have been next week but she's a bit busy!) so please don't try to work out my politics from what I post on here.

I didn't. You're going off on one I'm afraid.

Let's see how 12 good men and women interpret the law.

I'll be astonished if anyone is ever in bother for being noisy at a protest.

Our investment in Rwanda might help them become a better country as they will have more scrutiny on them.

We are not a fascist state, end of.

We are one of the most tolerant, diverse and democratic countries in the world.

We all have a democratic voice come polling day, we have a fair and open media force.

We aren't perfect, but perfect is an ask too much.
Agree with everything there Lala except the media quote.

Easy solution. Stay on the football section.

I'm not so sure it was checks and balances as removing someone who is longer a positive for the Party. Self interest, not that of the country.

Lala, look at what I said. No we're not a fascist state. I was talking about the way that such things start.

Aye, but I don’t think fascism will ever gain momentum in this country, and you were talking about how it starts and various connotations focussed around that etc.

Fascism will never garner majority consensus in the U.K.

You have gone at the game 66, go to bed have a good Kip and come back with a fresh outlook, your hatred as got the better of you.

I could be wrong and stand to be corrected if I am, but the roots of Facism came from the late 19th century in Austria and France.

Now then, where and when was Hitler born?

Reading some of the utter shite on here only strengthens my belief you lot are turning into some sort of weird cult.
It's refreshing, after the week your Lords and Masters have had, to see you reduced to single sentence ramblings in defeat.

We should be more worried about what’s happening in the rest of the world, Russian aggression which will continue, China and Taiwan, and Arabs acr the Middle East and North Africa now believing that their economy is wo under democracy., a view that will no doubt be encouraged by both Russia and China. There is no facism here, no more than we would have been turned to communism under Corbyn.

We are all fascists. Or at the very least potential fascists. It just needs the right conditions to bring it to the fore.

20th century communism was built around the cult of the individual and the absolute power of the individual and to keep the masses in their place by way of fear.

Don't forget proroging parliament and changing electoral boundaries to suit.

But then, by definition, we aren't talking about a cult of personality which is where the O/P suggests a fascist state starts.

Currently, those entering the process to be Leader of the Conservative Party have to convince others they have what it takes. Yes that includes self-promotion but that's not what they were being accused of.
