How to get the best out of Yates

No doubt a huge talent, scores crucial goals, is a popular member of the squad and more than has the ability to go all the way however there are many games when he plays alone up front where we just don't seem to make the most of his presence in the side. I thought Lavery proved more a threat when he came on than Yates did the whole game. This isn't a thread to criticise Jerry as I just think the way we set up the team quite often doesn't suit him. Thoughts?

I think a lot of what Gerry offers is his ability to press defenders. He needs to be a pain in the butt and get the defence hurrying up and making mistakes.
It might just be me but I think he's not done as much of that in the last couple of games.
Lavery is of course similar.
So now we have both of them fit I think I'd be looking at playing them 60/30 and getting them to up the press and the "ratting".

His main problem (and he doesn’t have many) is his first touch he very often has a bobbly one and loses the ball.

It’s not easy playing up front on your own. Your work rate needs to be immense
You need to want the ball every time we win it at the back and you need the ball to stick to you like glue.

I like Jerry Yates,he has a wee tendency to drift out of games or go quiet but he has a happy knack of scoring important goals or being in the right place at the right time

I think he’ll get better as we improve as a team - like everyone at our Club, if he’s prepared to work hard he’ll get his rewards and he does - he’s not Bob Hatton but might become one

Good luck Jerry👍

He's no good when he his team mates are 25 yards from him throughout. It's his intelligence of movement in and around the box that is his biggest attacking attribute, rather than his pace or strength.

This is why Jerry needs either a striker partner, which we aren't playing with, or a midfielder who can play close to him or get past him. When he has that he's a threat, Preston being an example of the former and Reading being an example of the latter.

This ⬆️ definitely more effective with Madine alongside him, we know he can do it alone as he did last season but I think at this level he needs more support.
The answer is Gaz Goals or equivalent.
His season lit up last year when he partnered either Madine or Simms.

Seems similar when he played at Swindon with Doyle (I think it was)?

Good points made above though, Lavery looked more potent but Jerry had run the steam out of their defenders for 70 mins with his constant runs and harassment.

Also he was shouting at the midfield to play the ball through quicker as he was making the runs but the ball was one second behind him so he got caught offside.

Definitely needs someone close to him was surprised with the line up yesterday and thought after the QPR game Keshi would have been that man but he was to far away from him.

For me he can't play as that lone striker so 4-3-3 or 5-4-1 you might as well go with Madine in that system.

he's reverted to be being played how he was at the start of last season. A lone striker with no-one near him with his back to goal. And when your opponents are dominating possession it makes his job much harder.

I suppose it depends on who we are playing, Critch obviously saw a way of trying to stop Swansea yesterday and therefore he changed personnel and formation and although it may not have been a spectacle, we got a point against an in form side in their own backyard.
I would always prefer Madine or Simms with Yates, just as I would prefer to see uncle Richard alongside Marv. The good thing is we do seem to have quite a few options when everyone's fit, keeping them that way is another matter.

It will be interesting to see the line up against WBA

yeh fully agree. My concern is that perhaps Yates is starting to feel a bit under-valued and how that may reflect in his performance. An unused sub when we needed a goal and other games on the bench since Laverys injury might not in his mind reflect Critchs faith in him.

I remember Rafa Benitez as a TV pundit being encouraged to disparage the performance of a player (I can’t remember who but think it was Jordan Henderson for some reason)
He said, I can’t really comment as I don’t know the role or the tactic that the manager has set up for him without listening in the changing room.

In Rafas terms, Critch might well know the lone striker role damages Jerry in terms of goals, but overall his job might be to exhaust their defence enough until the last 20 mins when we strike? I might be wrong but it’s always a thought before we criticise players.

I saw yesterday that Saka was given a clear role to stop Van Dyke carrying the ball out of defence. It was extra running and workload for Saka and he was knackered mid second half. Sacrifice of a talent to aid the team.

Agree, we are definitely not getting the best out of him. He’d be a different proposition played with Lavery, which is a partnership I’d like to see develop. Of course, how we set up may not allow for that.

If Simms returns, then it gets more difficult and I’d struggle to see a spot for Madine.

He is waiting for Ellis Simms

Lavery plays the lone striker role for Northern Ireland and he plays it very well. I would guess he will be first choice for that role once he is match fit and Yates will play in a front 2 or off the bench.
