Ian Evatt

Not sure about that tbh. Crellin is a young lad playing his first season as proper no. 1. Not sure that will fo him any good. Bet Barton isnt happy about Evo's comments. Gilks is goalkeeper coach there too.
Think Evo is under huge pressure.

I'd hate for a manager of ours to do this, I just don't think it helps at all. Successful managers need the respect of the players and I don't see how this will help that.

The very best managers defend their players and take the blame/responsibility themselves. It may be different in private but in public you would never hear Guardiola, Klopp etc talking about a player like that in the media.

When Mourinho was at the top of his game (and Holloway for us) he would take all the focus and pressure away from his players, whether that was shouldering the blame, taking on the media or coming out with something controversial. Evatt is a young manager, he has a lot to learn, I just don't think he will get the time at Bolton to get it right.

Poor show from Evo no way that’s going to inspire a young keeper, using him as a scape goat for his teams failings. Can see Evo
Getting sacked soon

Does seem a bit bizarre, not often you see a manager publicly shame one of their players. I used to hate when Grayson used to IMPLY the results weren't his fault and the it was simply the players not doing what he wanted - feels a bit like blame shifting. I guess you can't win though as Critchley has been criticised for not doing similar to what Evatt is doing here in his post-match interviews.

Surprisingly saw quite a bit of support for what Evatt has said here though by Bolton fans, as apparently the lad has made two unforgivable mistakes two weeks in a row (or something like that), mucking up really basic stuff and cost them points. As others have mentioned we don't know exactly what's gone on so its hard to comment.

Surely he's got a point hasn't he?
I'm amazed the Fleetwood players didn't get tested.
The protocol didn't require that but he never complained when they beat the Seasiders did he? I think that's the point really, although the Scottish international player who was stopped playing for Celtic this week thinks the controls are too draconian.

I can't get my head round the fact you play a team who you discover after the match that several of their players have tested positive and then 3 days later you play another match and don't test any of your own players. Am I missing something here ? Protocol might not require it but surely that's wrong.

I don’t agree with effectively shaming the young keeper in public. Why do it privately behind closed doors if you’re going to do this as well? Makes no sense and won’t help the lads confidence at all.

For the record, he WAS at fault for the first goal by Cambridge, but equally Evo has dropped the ball with his comments. Here:

IAN Evatt has apologised for his choice of words in Saturday’s post-match interview at Cambridge United.

The Bolton boss came under fire on social media after saying his 20-year-old keeper Billy Crellin must “man-up” after a series of first team errors.

Speaking to The Bolton News, Evatt admitted he should have chosen his words more carefully but stood by his decision to discuss the Fleetwood loanee’s form in the media.
“The terminology should have been better,” he said. “And I apologise for that if any offence has been caused.

“What I’d meant was that there is a big step up between junior football and senior football and that Billy does have to get to grips with that as soon as possible.

“I have spoken to him this morning and he understands what I meant. He agrees with the sentiment, in fact. So there is no problem there at all.”

Several prominent football voices on had questioned Evatt’s viewpoint, including former Bolton striker Marvin Sordell.

“It baffles me so much. If he thinks his performances have been shaky so far, what does he expect will happen now?” he wrote on Twitter.

Evatt maintains, however, that his words will not have come as any surprise to Crellin or the rest of his team-mates.

“I had spoken to Billy during the week about my concerns and it was the same after the game,” he said. “Nothing I said in the media was any different to what I said to Billy in person.

“Bolton Wanderers fans will know by now that what you see is what you get with me, honesty and clarity. I won’t hide anything. And my players know that as well.

“I fully accept, though, it wasn’t the best choice of phrase and I can’t take that back.

“And I am disappointed that we’re sat talking about this on a Sunday rather than what was a good performance at Cambridge.”

Macmahon used to do it all the time. It didn't seem to stop the players playing for him or staying at club for long spells and seemingly mostly enjoying it.

I don't like it, but at the same time I think sometimes there's an obsession with how 'top managers' do it - the pressure on a City player is global, it's enormous. They shelter their players cos their like Hollywood stars. Ours aren't.

For a Blackpool player it's very different. So when Critchley straight bats everything, you feel as if it's not entirely necessary, there's not the same interest. His words are not going to be reported globally by hundreds of different sources... What was it Macca said about Phil Barnes and his clown shoes?

Sometimes the elephant in the room needs confronting - Evo's maybe said the wrong thing but I'd love Critch to say something like "Jerry needs a goal" - cos we all know he does!

Macca was also the one who accused John Murphy of missing games 'with a twisted sock'

Yep, forgot that.

Macca really shouldn't have worked should he.? Nepotistic, always playing golf and sarcy about the players in interviews but somehow, on balance, he worked really well a lot of the time.

It’s a tough environment and as a keeper you’re going to get stick for errors that lead to goals. As a young player, you have to accept that and push on through or you’ve no chance.
The irony with this of course, is that just as the keeper has to learn the hard way, so does Evo in terms of the tricky world of media communication. He probably never thought twice about what he was saying and now is having to deal with an uncomfortable situation.

His fellow keeper at Fleetwood is Alex Cairns who lost his brother in a tragic car crash, but fought back to get his career re-established after spells at Chesterfield,Barrow and Rotherham.

Cairns of course had a baptism of fire for Leeds against someone I just cant seem to re-collect at the mo.

Personally IMO it depends on the player’s personality, some players need a kick up the backside to get them onside and some need a cuddle. It’s no different managing in everyday life situations. We’re all different and react in different ways to different situations.
one thing I would say is in today’s society it does seem more often than not a cuddle is required.

Still my favourite manager by a massive country mile.

Also said Brian Reids injury something along the lines of a lost eyelash.

And of the the Welsh under 21 defender from Liverpool (think he was Liverpool. Reserve captain), he said something like 'he s good with ball at his feet but cannot head it or tackle, which is no good for a centre half'. I don't think he played for us or anyone again.

Eiffion Jones?

I used to work with someone who lived near the training ground. Said Macca turned the air blue on many occasion. Could hear him yelling from their garden. 😁

I used to work with Billy Crellin's mum. Cracking lass.

The lad was very highly thought of. I don't think Barton will be happy about Evo doing that. FIGGGHHHTT.
