Irrational dislike of players

In my youth when I was a gobby immature prat i picked on a couple of players. On reflection it was totally irrational. John Evanson was the first player I took such a dislike to, tricky left winger who went on to play with Best, Moore and Marsh at Fulham. I used to get stupidly vocal towards him…not helpful at all thinking back. I did the same with Iain Hesford, good keeper but not in my eyes as a teenager. My mate used to give stick to Mike Davies…club stalwart. Why do we do it?

Players are still singled out more than ever on AVFTT.

Think it's a case of you see a player early doors do something bad or that you don't like then you cannot help but keep monitoring them to see them make the same mistake.

Turton's back passing really ground my gears last season in his earlier performances but it is irrational because overall he did a splendid job for the team in multiple positions. It's just football I guess.

Grant Leitch

Because he lived a few doors down from me and I always felt as a kid he was a bit cocky when playing in our gardens ... Probably a nice bloke now

Also, Andy Gouck, coz when at school a fancied a lass a few years older then me and then he ended up going out with her for a few years 😭😂

Whoever the prick in the West was who never stopped giving Hillsy abuse for 90 minutes.

Obviously being from the West he never travelled anywhere so at least he wasn't there at Crewe.

Bobby Thomson signed by Sam Ellis from Hibs for £5,000. As a kid I thought 5 grand was a huge sum of money and expected said player to justify the price tag. All I witnessed was a cart horse only worth sending to the glue factory with mistimed tackles and bookings galore. One or two posters have stated they thought he was a decent player, but that £5,000 weighed heavily on my mind.

Micky Burns. Just couldn't like him. Scored plenty, but missed too many more. I used to stand outside the players entrance collecting autographs, but never asked for his.

Sorry Micky...I was too young to see your value to the team...sorry!!

Caig and Bardsley, then O'Kane soon after. I was just joining in but they were woeful players.

Recently, I never took to Spearing. Objectively, I could appreciate him but I dunno. Never gave him stick,I'm too old for that but I never liked him in the way many did.

Now that is just weird, he was ace.

Mind you what about that bloke of here who had that irrational hatred of Holloway, even argued with him...... weirdo!! 🙃

Always supported our players and in some cases forced myself to like them. Loads of players from other teams that I have really disliked.Edit. Never liked Norris.

A guy used to stand near us on the South paddock years ago who slagged Mark Bonner off every time he touched the ball, nicknamed him Bonnerator!

In all honesty I was never a fan of Richard Keogh. If ever he was playing in a game I was watching on telly I’d say to my lad to just wait for the Keogh error and a few times that mistake came. I’m now happy to wipe the slate clean though and look forward to see what he can achieve for us.

I used to say "bloody hell" a lot.

When Jason Wilcox played for us and me and my 'kids' had seats in L block, he kept slicing his balls in our direction - so I was always saying "Bloody Hell, Wilcox" 😱

So now, whenever any of us say or write "Bloody Hell" it's always followed by "Wilcox" ...🧡

Think it's the eyes. Always looks like he's just seen something really bad happen but doesn't know how to tell anyone.

John Evanson wasn't on my Christmas card list either. It seemed he didn't want to pass to Mickey Walsh. Used to really frustrate me.

If there are any tarts on here tonight please don't take offence, but John Evanson was an absolute tart in tangerine!

He was a real 'Fancy Dan' grrrr...

My old man found Kevin Phillips really annoying which was a real strange one 😂
I used to get pelters from guys around me when I yelled at Phillips. Eventually they began to see what I had noticed about his game...he could no longer pass or shoot in a tangerine shirt. He'd lost interest! I'd sit there quietly smirking as those around me did the yelling for me. In his day he was lethal though, even for us at times.

funny you mention Burns. I thought he was a very good player but he was so soft, softer than Suddick. He wouldn't go anywhere near a tackle and if some-one tackled him hard he'd often then go missing for the rest of the game. , But scored some great goals for us and overall a very good player.

One good season for us and one very poor one whereas you say didn't look interested.

The best is when a mate develops an irrational hatred for a particular player, who then goes on to score a screamer. Allowing you to relentlessly extract the proverbial from said mate for the rest of the match. Or even the rest of the season if it’s a really good goal.

two more recent ones spring to mind, one valid and one not so.

Rob Edwards - the nobber one - he was gash so not really irrational.
Andy Morrell - frustrated me because he was a good team player who did a lot of his good work outside the box in the team build up play. But I always thought he needed to get in the area more, especially the six yard box.Maybe that's just the type of player he was.

From his Wikipedia profile:

"He was unpopular with a section of the home fans, who regarded his playing style as too individualistic, and in the summer of 1974, he asked for a transfer."

So, maybe I was influenced by the "weirdos" around me! 🤣

Some people don't get goalscorers, it's funny. My ex-GF's dad was a Man Utd fan who loathed Ruud van Nistelrooy. "He doesn't do anything except score." 30 goals a season wasn't enough apparently.

POTTS......One player who I totally dislike....even more now that he's at the knobheads down the road.

WTF was with that Alice band he wore..... 🙄...spent more time adjusting it than kicking a ball
Walked around watching the game and only when the ball was 5 feet from him would he run.....
A legend in his own mind.......and the only player I would happily knee cap with a shotgun.........That's not irrational in any way!!!

Ginger top Davies, in the period when he did the lot from corners, throw ins , free kicks etc, problem was he wasn’t any good at any of them. Big heart ,no talent

Grant Leitch - Was that in Carleton? Think he was the year ahead of me in primary school
