Is a rebuild really needed? Next seasons squad

If everyone had been fit this season - all strikers, creative midfielders and wide players the I think we'd have been about 16/17th. I still think we had holes in the squad but if we'd had the right man at the helm and a fit squad I don't think this would've happened as it's a poor league.

Think it is interesting to see what the starting line-up at Wembley was when we beat Lincoln. I think we all know we were the best team in L1 that season after the first dozen games or so.

Maxwell
Turton Ballard Husband Garbutt
Mitchell Stewart Dougall Anderson
Yates Embleton

Compare that with a team of players that are contracted or with option for next season.

Grimshaw
Gabriel Ekpetita Husband Lyons
Carey Trybull Dougall CJ
Yates Lavery

Doesn't look too shabby, then add a couple of good loans, new signings, other signed players (Tharme, Beesley, Thompson, Apter, etc) and we would be pretty competitive. If Jerry goes then we need to move quickly to find a replacement.

yep, when you look at that comparison, it really doesn't look too bad. The key is retaining those current players who might attract interest from better teams.

Yeah plus all our players have championship experience, some have progressed and improved.

Just need that confidence back and against slightly lesser teams and players, it's easier to perform well and build confidence.

But we're not down just yet.

Think wholesale changes would be a mistake

Enough of them players would make the core of a good League 1 squad

A few good additions along with a decent manager ( not ruling out Dobbie) and we are contenders in that league

Too much disruption and/or drama will lead to a poor start

Steady as she goes approach- boring ,yep, but effective
Time for cool heads and taking Avftt with a punch of salt

But we may be forced into a whole sale change by natural contract ends and higher placed clubs buying are more talented players.
Looks like there’s a realistic chance we’ll need to sign 3 goalkeepers. 3 centre backs. A left back. A right back. A central mid. A winger and 4 strikers.

I get what you’re saying but in honesty to not go through a ‘total’ rebuild you’d need to activate options in people like Husband, Lavery Garbs Stewart Dougall. I think there’s more cons there than pros.

Taking the options on Husband, Lavery and Dougall is a no brainer for league 1.

I'd let Stewart and Garbs go though

Not sure id agree.
Dougall’s the only one I’d give way on I think but he’s looked fairly poor for over a year now.
Lavery didn’t seem to be able to control a ball at many points this season before injury. Regardless of the level we’re at that’s a problem. Husband was similar for me for the majority of this season. That karate kick ‘clearance’ at Luton. What ever level of football you’re at that is basic stuff.

Plus I’d we do lose Jerry Ekpi Grimshaw. That’s a fair few million I think we’d reinvest in really good, younger replacements.

Here is my 2 peneth for next season in Division 1.
1, A N Other (6ft +) & Grimshaw

Fullbacks
2, Gabriel & Connolly
3, Lyons & Thompson

Centre Backs
Ekpiteta, Tharme, A N Other (Experienced) & Casey

Midfielders
A N Other, A N Other, Trybull, Stewart (pay as you play) Carey, Trusty.

No 10s
Fiorini, (must) & Anderson

Strikers
Beesley & Lavery, Rogers (must), A N Other, A N Other

8/9 New signings for me, adding any players to the above the likes of:-
Charlie Goode/ Clarke Robertson CBs
Mat Bayliss, Oliver Norburn, MFs
Lee Bonis, Lyle Taylor (Experienced) Ronan Curtis.

With the support of Holmes, Trusty, Lankshire, Moore, Mariette, Lescott etc I would hope we have a chance
of promotion next season.

Connolly's not an FB, Lyons is more a RB than a LB.

Trusty couldn't make the grade at Hartlepool.

Fiorini, are you out of your mind?

Connolly is a must in a match day squad of 18 for next season in Division 1, Trusty is a developing midfielder who left Hartlepool because of injury he will get his chance which the club need to do. Fiorini is a talented young player, the more games he gets the more influencial he'll become.
You seem 'lost' are you out of your mind !

Hamilton's out of contract, James and Dale will likely be permanent moves to their loan clubs, Yates will probably be sold.

Hamilton I imagine would accept a new contract, but we'll need another couple of wingers as well, a holding CM to replace Stewart/Bridcutt, a first XI CB, at least one striker, and possibly a new contract for Stuart Moore.

Is it worth it to have him as backup for Grimshaw? Isn't he one of the higher earners?
I think Dale could be coming back unless we drop the price

We’ve a few more relegations yet before I’d have Thompson in the team - headless chicken and can’t believe we paid for him.

I said on another thread we have to be careful to avoid a knee jerk reaction to relegation (if it happens!!) regarding the players with options.

Husband, Keshi (I know we don’t have an option on him), Kenny, CJ, Marvin, even Garbutt and probably others I can’t remember right now we’re players who were part of the best team in league 1 for the second half of the season just a couple of years ago. None of them will be too old, just need their confidence back.
'...we're players who were...'
How on earth does 'we're' (intended as 'were' - clearly...), only for it then to appear (quite correctly) as 'were', make an appearance (with a slightly altered grammtical structure), within the space of no more than 4 short words, and whilst contained in the very same same sentence?
With your carefully constructed articles , P_B, you are clearly a highly valued contributor and always submit entertaining pieces. And I'm certainly not trying to preach to you (I've submitted my own share of material, featuring articles with more than their fair share of errors, believe me - and that's after they've been carefully proofed!). But, and I'm sure you don't need me to tell you this, this was quite a glaring glitch, and I just felt the need to raise it. Consider your knuckles suitably rapped.
(P.S. To slip into footballing parlance, this is perhaps an example of 'taking your eye off the ball.')

Horrible flashbacks of Mrs Stockley in English GCSE there……

One shall consider oneself suitably chastised by Spider-Man. One can only blame a combination of the fact I should have been working at the time, autocorrect and a general dropping in standards of the English language in society in general. Will file somewhere under must do better.

Anyway. 3 points tonight 👍🏻
