Is Points per Game a fair system?

If the season is to end is this the fairest way to resolve it. Won’t take in to account home and away advantage, teams still to play or of course the Play Offs but seems the favorites option are at the moment.

No. Doesn't take account of who you still have to play, the squad you've got left, as well as the factors you've mentioned.

Points per game is just too simplistic for me.

As well as not taking into account home and away it won’t take into account who you have played so far. Some may have played Liverpool & City twice whilst others might have played Norwich and Villa twice. Then you have to consider things like who was on a 5 game winning streak and who had 1 draw in the last 10, suspensions pending etc etc etc.

Would need something akin to Duckworth Lewis in Cricket. And i’m no mathematician but I assume it would be pretty much impossible to take in every variable.

I don’t care as we can’t go up or down. Kind of the duckworth lewis method of doing it. Fair as you can do it without playing I guess

Fine with me. Done on sporting prowess and the luck of the draw fixture-wise. Seems better than voiding the season and making all the games played worthless. Least worst option but can't see some being happy: P/boro, Cods.

The only option is to class the season as Null & Void.

No promotions.

No relegations.

Use last seasons placings for next season (if there is one).

Use this for every division in the football pyramid.
Totally agree. What has happened this last few months is bigger than football and clubs should take it on the chin and not be idiots about it. If your squad is good enough you'll get promotion next season.

I've gone from being a tad annoyed with the selfishness of trying to continue at all costs, to finding it quite amusing and revealing.

To try and save this season to potentially screw up further seasons is beyond parody. Then some of the ideas from behind closed doors, neutral venues, shortened half's, all in the name of integrity of course, is showing true colours.

Remember the thick of it and the last series? The stuff they were making up were government initiatives a few weeks later, this seems very similar. Maybe get Iannucci on the EPL board.

Of course it is unfair on Liverpool, Leeds. Also on tranmere, Wimbledon, Swindon (yes there are teams outside the big league). But the lack of common sense is palpable.

Will the EPL fixation have an effect going forward on people in this country - will it bollocks. It will be sold out grounds and 100 pounds a month sky subscriptions for all!

Bring on the next excuse for carrying on - whoever said on 2-man cuppies maybe on to a winner!

Just don't forget, it's all about the integrity of the competition.

That's your view Ghost, many others feel different and you should respect that. We are not all half wits you know.
Anyway, a simple question. Declare it null and void. Who goes in the Champions League? The teams that were in it last season?

Probably best to wait and see if there will be a Champions/ Europa League before deciding who will participate in it.

It's Uefa's showpiece event. If and when football resumes, then so will the Champions League.
Agreed but it isn’t going to be like a normal Champions League with qualifying starting in July. It might not even start until January and then what do you do.

Right so if you're saying football won't resume til next January, then why not finish this season off then. And scrap the whole of the20/21season

Whatever the solution, wait for the complaints, allegations and legal challenges. Hours of fun ahead for G of E. My hope is that it does not distract from the primary objectives of saving lives and getting to whatever future normality will be.

I’ve said exactly that on various threads before. I don’t get the rush to sort something out right now.

It could be that it’s not safe to play football until next March so you could just pick up this season where is was left and call it 2019/20/21 season.

Anything that UEFA, FA, EFL come up with before we know it’s safe to play is pure speculation. It’s not unrealistic that they pick a date to start again and the night before an entire club has to isolate for 2 weeks because someone catches the virus, therefore ruining all plans and timetables.

That is absolutely what it boils down to, PB. The financial impacts. For me there are two broad categories there. The 'fat cat' side of things where FIFA/UEFA/the FA/Prem/Sky/big clubs are not making even more piles of cash. And the 'grass roots' side of it, where clubs outside the top leagues across Europe are potentially going bust because the financial stakes are so high in the game now.

For me we could easily say that, as soon as we find a safe way to do it, only domestic leagues run next season (closed doors or however) and not run European tournaments next season at all - to avoid the bunfight for who should be in Europe next year if we cancel this season.

We could easily do the above, but as 20s touches on these are Uefa/Fifa showpieces and the mix of hubris and money will mean Uefa/Fifa will fight tooth and nail to run them no matter what. The point is that really they don't need to! I'm going to suggest that deep down most of us know that it doesn't matter if the various leagues and cups have a blank in the history books against who wins them for this season, and possibly next. What really matters is how we keep as many clubs as possible alive.

I'd argue that what FIFA, UEFA and top leagues like the PL should be doing is forgetting about showpieces for this season and next and looking at how they can use their huge reserves of wealth to keep the lower tiers of the domestic leagues alive.

What about simply finishing the leagues in alphabetical order?
Arsenal would get to win the prem for the 1st time in years rather than Liverpool 😁

Something would obviously still need to be done to punish notlob though!! 🤓

PPG is probably the fairest way, but it's far from ideal. But what actually is? There isn't actually a fair way is there, apart from playing out the season and that's not guaranteed. So if the season can't be played out, and they have to decide league positions, PPG would probably be the best way

I don't see how they can resolve this in a fair way.
Every season there are dramatic changes of form etc.
There is always one team at least that suddenly upsets all the form books.
There's no way that they can sort this out.
Just end the season with teams where they are. It's the only way.

Yep, end the season now, tables as are, promote/relegate as is...simples...
Start next season as would normally be...
Winners and losers......but realistic...

There's only two options 1) Call it null and void or 2) Final standings as is.

You can't play any games in time.

That's it, take it on the chin and move on either way, since when has the game been fair?
Or throw it all up in the air and draw teams out of the hat at random to populate the Leagues next year......be great to see a Premier League clash between Macclesfield and Mansfield on live tv on a Sunday afternoon while little Leeds and Chelsea battle each other in League 2 👍

I still think there will be legal action whatever they decide to do. My problem with points per game is that it doesn't take in to account who you have to play and where you have to play them. Ironically if our season in the Prem had ended this way, I'm pretty sure we'd have stayed up!

What about everyone who says all games are hard at the end of the season, teams at the bottom desperate to stay up? Points per game is as good as anything

I doubt there will be legal action
