Is Sonny Carey as good as Patino

Carey is unbelievable when you consider where hes come from, after he came on against Preston he was a bit shaky at first and I thought "it might just be that this lad is not up to Championship standard", then he played like a footballer who'd spent years in the 2nd tier for the rest of the game.

Is he has good as Patino? I dont think so, Patino has the potential to go on and play for Arsenal and England if things go well for him. Carey has the potential to be a very important player for us and not someone else though - hopefully he stays clear of injuries and suspensions from now on and fulfills that potential!

I think Carey is, or has been, a little underrated tbh. He's been in and out of the side and it does affect your game - see the difference in Jerry this year vs last year. I agree with everyone else that long term Patino has the greater potential, but Carey has the quality to be a top player imo. That skill to get away from their player to set up Patino, and that through ball for CJ were both brilliant, and it's those little moments that separate the good from the great. It's the ability to affect a game.

The difference between Carey and Patino imo is that Patino would be capable of those two moments, but also has the final ball to get him those assists and goals. That's what Carey needs to work on, but we're lucky to have both of them this season and while they're both injury free, along with Yates, we'll have more than enough to keep the points column ticking over.

I don't think there's a massive gap between them currently, but Patino’s weight of passing is something that's hard to coach. You just get the feeling with Patino that you're watching the start of a very special career, a player who is playing at 25% of what he will be capable of in his peak years.

Carey is quality who isn't at his ceiling yet and will only get better, but isn't as special as Patino. No shame in that either as there's very few youngsters around with Patino's natural ability.

We're very lucky to witness Patino for a year and we're very lucky to own Carey outright.

So much talent in this squad, we just need them to develop some collective consistency and they could be a force in the Championship. Second half of the season will be very interesting.

To be fair it’s an interesting question in the sense I’d intuitively say no, but only really on account of Patino being slightly ahead of Carey and a few years younger. Trying to decide who has more long term potential is definitely above my pay grade! It’s just exciting to me that Carey is able to hold his own after being plucked from obscurity at this level. Barring injuries he will only get better, and he’s ours.

Sonny has the potential to be a fantastic player, but young Charlie has the ability to make difficult technical stuff look effortless…

His touch for the cross that set up Jerry’s second goal was superb as was his goal.

I don't know as both have shown signs of what they can do. Let's hope there's a bit of competition between them both. It can only benefit us.

At the same age I suspect he was nowhere near. He is still young though and definitely an asset who will get better and better

Carey has plenty of potential having come from non league, but Patino has the edge having come from years in the Arsenal youth teams.
I hope Carey nails down a first team place

I hope Carey does more running at defenders through the middle of the field. He didn’t half spook the nobbers central defenders!
Patino is, hopefully, loving his time here. Does anyone else think he is developing “a can’t wait for Saturday” attitude?
House mates? Good for them?

Carey is 2 years 9 months older and still not a first team regular. Charlie is way ahead. He's an incredible talent.

It’s a shame Sonny got injured at Udders on Boxing Day as that definitely set him back. I’ve always been an admirer of him and he will definitely be a great player for us with regular games. Charlie on the other hand is already a regular in the team but has a great passing range and the ability to find pockets of space, that’s what makes a very good midfielder.

Both look as if they are going to be very talented players. Would not at all though be surprised if Patino is the more talented and successful. His vision, composure and range of passing alone mark him out as special.

Big Carey fan but no he’s nowhere near as good as Patino and never will be.anybody who thinks differently I’d question their football knowledge.

Carey flatshares with Patino and Corbeanu.

Can only be good for Carey to be constantly learning and competing with both of them.

Today will do him the world of good. Some good balls into the strikers (should have been 2 assists for Madine alone), a decent shot off the post and looked lively all game. Hopefully, he keeps his place and we get to see the best of him. His technique is superb, that 1st touch to put the ball where he wanted before he hit the post was insane!

Hyper critical mode here...but both did "disappear" at times today especially when Coventry were pushing on.

However, that's because they're so young, still learning and have to do the horrible stuff a midfielder has to do.

When they push forward though they're a massive threat.

Be interesting to see how they manage without Dougall now he's suspended.

Has had 3 good games in his entire time here, two of them off the bench, so let's not get carried away.

Can't ignore the fact he often makes the wrong decision and a large percentage of his passes are either over hit or under hit.

Why is Dougall suspended? He’s already served a 5 card ban.

Quoting the Oracle Chisnell.....maybe he's not....🤷‍♂️
5 bookings in the first 19 games is a one game ban, which he has served vs Watford. 10 bookings in the first 37 games is a two game ban. I can’t see Kenny avoiding that!

Marv and Connolly both on 4? So they need to behave for the next 2 games I think.

Patino makes the difficult things look easy. His assist for Yates second goal last week is a prime example. Just three touches of the ball. One to receive the ball, the second to make a sharp turn rather than check backwards and out and the third to hit a delicate pin point cross. Don't underestimate how difficult those three touches were.

Today he was a much more important player for us than Patino. His strength was fantastic. Don’t get me wrong Patino is a great asset but Carey should be starting if he plays each game as he did today.

Both of them need more games to develop their game to their full potential. Patino has more vision at present but he has less pace than Carey. As someone has said, both drifted out of the game today at times. Typical of young players with few games under their belts.

Charlie's touch and the effortless way he moves are something we haven't seen in a very long time. We are so lucky to have him. As said above, once he and Sonny add more of the defensive cover element to their games they will be right up there. But Charlie will go all the way.

I wrote on the Coventry message board that I thought Gyokeres was a good player but that they left it too late to bring him on. This was one reply:

Your man Patino, feet to fast, started to early...
Watching him play of the left in the second half was a joke, couldn't get near the kid.

There is only one problem with Charlie Patino who can we find to replace
him when he returns to his parent club?

We worried who would replace Bowler, we ended up replacing him with the current top goalscorer in the Championship.

In short it's a problem for another day, and probably won't be someone you can predict.
