January transfer rumour thread Part 1

The guy that has signed for Plymouth. Ben Waine. My opinion is nowhere near a championship striker. Surely one for the development squad only if it happened.

We don't need kids in this window, we need hardened Championship standard players with some maturity and influence to help get us out of this mess. Trouble is we are now in a relegation dogfight with a manager who is down on his arse and disgruntled supporters. Add that we aren't going to pay the wages it will take to get these players in then we could be as we are now by the end of January bar 2 or 3 new loan players.

What we need and what we get are 2 totally different things apparently. If the board are going for some child from new Zealand and the injury prone Morgan Rogers who is also unproven at this level, then things do not appear to bode well at all...

Could be summer window, rinse and repeat.🥺

Agree. We have plenty of players. We need a couple of experienced players a quality above what we have. Happy to release some and sign 2 players over signing 4 of lesser quality. 2 centre mid or a mid and a left sided CB.

There’s nowt useless about MA, old son. Given a decent chance, (and he’s certainly not been getting that) he‘ll do more than alright. He was condemned before he even walked through the door at Bloomfield Rd. Most likely, you were one of the initial condemners? MA, has had to deal with a plethora of long term injuries, half a dozen sending offs, the loss of his star player and deal with major disappointment in the transfer market. Meanwhile, I’ve watched some cracking away games this season, claiming points at recent Premier League clubs Burnley and Sheffield Utd. We also took 3 points off QPR away. I actually think it’s admirable MA is still with us. None of our current predicament can be placed on SS‘s shoulders either. Despite the results, we as a club are headed in the right direction. New training ground on the horizon. East Stand revitalisation primed to start moving. The only downside to being a supporter of our fabulous, historic club, is the amount of negative, fickle, thick-headed, non-thinking, so-called fans we have - that especially lack the ‘human touch’. No wonder MA doesn’t go to applaud us all at the end of matches. As he says, he’s damned if he does, or if he doesn’t. Given the amount of grief he regularly receives, I doubt I would too. Anyway, give the bloke a bloody chance. A proper chance. Give the players some time and a chance. Give our club a chance. Its all too easy to jump on the band wagon, following discerning types who shout “out, out,” The amount of festering negativity that I read on here, on a regular basis, leads me to believe that many of you might just live in an area with a postcode beginning PR. I sincerely hope not. Far from removing a manager who’s trying to give his all - it would would be far more advantageous to the club, to remove the many insidiously, negative and toxic morons that inanely post tripe on this site. Just for the record - I’ve followed my beloved club for over 60 years. I used to walk to home matches and return from Poulton with my late Father. He would be mortified to read half the ‘stuff’ some of the so-called ‘fans’ spout on here. Supporters should support, end of - they shouldn’t try to destroy.
Mrs Appleton has spoken

I don't like his demeanour and was disappointed when he came as I felt it was an uninspiring appointment but he is our manager and I agree he has a totally shite hand dealt so far, when that hand improves I'll be interested to see what he can do, the time to judge is at the end of the season. I await the next OP title 'Should Appleton Go, ' What do you think of Appleton, 'If you where the manager tomorrow', 'Bring Dobbie in', as soon as times went bad lots of fans jumped ship, they obviously are not die hard fans just die hard fecking moaners, well done to Simon Saddler who has moved to club forward unbelievably in such a short space of time.
I’m not saying I was over the moon too Micky, but by heck, it happened and I’m always prepared to give a bloke a chance. A proper chance. And yes, re: SS. Bloody lifesaver

Rodgers and bowler would help our actual lack of beating players on the wing.

Plays to Appletons formation and style of play. We currently don't have a winger who can beat a player one on one.

Rodger’s and Bowler would be players playing in the correct position which we’ve not had yet under Appleton.

In addition to these we need 2 experienced quality central midfielders and a centre back for us to push on!

I thought he was sunning himself in Greece! Surely if Rodgers is a goer, then another wide man is a luxury when other ares of the team are crying out for reinforcements?
Don’t worry Michael will play him as a defensive midfielder, he probably hasn’t mentioned it to him though.

A day off the new window opening and other than Rodgers, which looks like it might happen, and Poole, which surely will not happen, have we had one decent rumour. Surely a commanding midfielder must be top of the list, but other than the French lad, a while back, we had had nothing.
The problem with Rodgers is he is another young player finding his way, when in fact we need oven ready Championship hardened players!
There won’t be too many rumours though… most of our transfers are kept under wraps, although I was told a month ago that Bowler’s return was virtually sealed and sorted. Much depends on the agent involved and their willingness to open their mouths to certain media sources. One thing that’s absolutely certain is that the clock is ticking for Appleton. A heavy defeat today and he’s toast. SS has been naive but he’s not stupid.

Funny how things can change.. a few weeks ago poveda would have nowhere near a signing for me. Now I think we really should be looking at it. Wonder what’s changed with him🤔

Looks like Morgan loan is going ahead.

Bowler one I've not heard anything about but if he (or Forest) want him to get game time then we are the option as he ain't getting it at Olympiacos or Forest and he can't be loaned or transfered to a fourth team this season.

On paper , that would be so fooking scary , but will Gaz be able to get the goals required ?
I was thinking that so we probably need a striker, has to be a unit with some pace and finishing skills. Madine can rest on the bench then, although he really has been excellent this season, not sure he is going to score many though. Maybe Yates (if he is still with us) or Lavery? Beesley?

Those 2 with Madine in the middle would fit the 433 model and with Poveda in the number 10 role, Patino the 8 and a new player as the 6.
I'd like that. Poveda has become a revelation but it was only the first half.
Not seen the "dive" replayed yet but whether it was or not it earned him a yellow. Shortly after that there was a hint of a stamp from him so bearing in mind referees current agenda against us he was perhaps lucky to stay on. The current inconsistency of referees is way beyond a joke.

I was sitting right in line with that ‘offence’ and as you will see in the replay he was definitely caught on the front of the foot. He went down a little easily, but he was definitely caught.

Rogers, Poole and the return of Bowler have already been on the radar given the links to Appleton so it begs the question what are the Coventry2 bringing to the party? Bowler is a no-brainer but not sure what the other two bring. We need to beef up (literally) the spine of the team. A dominant CH (preferbly left-sided) a strong running ball winner in the midfield and a mobile centre forward.

Again we failed to react to the changes by Sunderland at half-time and the midfield being over-run second half. Carey, Patino and CJ were just powder puff, it's a big concern that Appleton didn't react quickly enough and get Kenny Dougall on the pitch. We escaped with a draw but it was painful and frustrating to watch.

We can sign all the players in the world, if the manager can't spot when his team is losing control of a game and make substitutions or heaven forbid, formation changes, we are screwed. This 433 thing is going to send us down, at the very least I would have hoped the players would be better coached on how to play it out of possession by now.

Poole Rogers and Bowler won’t be the only 3 we sign for a start.

Starting a whispering/innuendo campaign against a new recruitment team 24 hours into a transfer window on the grounds that we might sign a couple of players we’ve heard of must be a new level of toxicity even for AVFTT…
Absolutely agree, although given the levels of vitriolic abuse some of our fans have stooped to this year I can't say I'm that surprised tbh

Brannigan!
Except he isn't especially tall (5'11) and isn't anything like Vieira or Pogba,

Of those we've been linked to Dele-Bashiru is most like them two in playing style, runs strongly with the ball etc,

Now, D-B and CamBran or Dan Barlaser would work brilliantly

I think that your point about 'Lots of sending Offs' might be relevant to MAs management?

Me and the very pleasant chap I spoke to during the Sheffield United game both agreed that getting Jonjo Shelley back in on loan would be an excellent move; it’s bound to happen once he is fully fit!

Not a rumour but a mate of mine is a West Brom fan, I was saying about needing a personality and someone strong to run a midfield etc he threw a name at me........

Jake Livermore, club captain at WBA but not played since the new manager came in and available for loan......apparently mates with MA from their time there together as well........

As I said not a rumour, but 100% what we need

It was an observation not criticism. I would much rather have a situation where the first we hear of a signing is when he is announced on the official site. My concerns about Poole and Rogers, apart from being Appleton "signings" are that Poole has never played regularly above Lg 1 and doesn't address the problem we have at the centre of defence. Morgan Rogers has been out injured for some time and while highly rated he wasn't a big success at his last loan club Bournemouth. We need signings that are going to make an impact straightaway and I'm hoping this is where the Coventry 2 will make their mark.

Would be a good signing but I imagine his wages would be out of our league.

I'm not a fan of all this window rumour nonsense and speculation but yours reads well. If WBA were to make him available and Appleton can sweet talk him, it would be a good idea. I know there's no substance but even so, good post.

So the alternative is to simply stick with him then and just accept being relegated?

Sorry but that’s not what I want we need a new manager/coach in now (should have been much sooner) to give us a chance of stopping the inevitable happening because under Appleton it’s nailed on I’am afraid.

Whilst I agree to some extent he’s had bad luck with injuries he’s constantly played players out of position, not made substitutions when it cried out for them, and in general picked the wrong starting 11, that’s no one else’s fault other than Appleton’s.
I prefer “ stick with him and stay up“, with a few good signings and key players back from injury.

Where' all our new great players then? Surely they've all been lined up weeks ago and now ready to sign. How many are Championship quality 7/8? Staying up! Staying up! Staying up!

Well done BS and the Pool board.

Just looking at a Scunny Message Board, they say Rob Apter isn't expected to play for them on New Years Day, which would have been the last game of his loan, due to injury.
He limped off on Boxing Day and has come back here for a scan......

Assuming said scan is clear he's being heavily linked with a Loan Move to Crewe for the 2nd half of the season, another step up in level for his development 👍
Sadly the scan wasn’t clear and the move to Crewe is off.
