Jerry

Clever switch by Appy. Their 14 was causing chaos. I was screaming for the switch over purely because Jerry has the engine to track back and we needed him to do that as Theo couldn’t cope with their LwB.

What a shift he put in. He’s got serious physical stamina hasn’t he? To do that much defending and have the energy to score that cracking brace is testimony to the kid.

Jerry always wears our shirt with pride and even when not at his best, he never fails to give 100%.
All the football experts (Shearer, Lineker etc) are forever saying that strikers need to score goals to build confidence, and a confident striker will always score goals. These two goals will have done Jerry the world of good and with service, his goals will start to flow.

Properly selfless player, often sacrificing his own figures for the team. So glad he got those two goals as it's vindication of his attitude of 'team first'.

As an aside, I think he suits the slightly wider role in the Championship. Allows him to use his intelligence and touch to find and create space rather than getting caught in a constant physical battle. Helps that he's fit as a fiddle too for the defensive side.

With respect, I suspect many of us, like myself, on here were keen players in our youth, but frankly weren’t good enough.

For me the next best thing was to watch a player busting a gut & playing with the sort of pride I’d have felt for just a minute in the famous tangerine shirt.

I always felt that from Brett Ormerod - & I get the same vibe from Jerry Yates every time. 👏👏👏

Bridcutt for Carey was a good shout as well, made a big difference. That brace was the old Jerry and his first goal was also a brilliant finish and great ball by CJ. Hopefully the goals will do Jerry and Madines confidence the world of good because that's the only thing that's been missing.

Top lad - really pleased for him and the team

so you've nothing positive to say about Madine or Yates after todays performance from them both! Think that says it all really.
I wasn't giving a review I just questioned the logic of saying someone is Championship standard after scoring two goals.

Yates 2nd goal was unbelievable, Gaz frustrates the hell out of me but keeps scoring so what can you say.

Dare I say it, and assist for Shane too for Jerry's third. Corbeanu who is a decent prospect but frankly a bit greedy being shown the way to play for the team by Jerry and Shane. Good positive subs at the right times. Anyone would think Appleton knew what he was doing.

They were but as others have said it was only one game.

I love Jerry and you'd hope he can kick on, must have done so much for his confidence.
Hes a confidence player so it'll be massive for him.

All open play not some pen, or even just some tap in.

Absolute quality strikes and brilliant play for the 2nd.

I dont know which is better, a left foot volley right into the corner or his weaving run and finish.

Both class.

Proved he's championship quality after one good game? Sorry what...
He usually plays very well, works hard, but due to the fact he’s a striker and hasn’t been scoring he comes in for some negative comments, I understand why you would say that but if he was played in the middle where he should be he’d have scored a lot more
In the same way that I work on the cardiology ward but if I was sent to the gynaecology ward I wouldn’t be as effective in my job, come to think of it I wouldn’t have a ** clue

I wasn't at the game JJ but I've seen the highlights and the second (his second) all day long for me.

Both class as you say.

I know, I think banging that first one gave him the confidence for what he did in the second. Him and Gaz hopefully hit a run of form.

I've watched his second goal three times on replay, had that been Harland or some other premiership player the critics would have been creaming themselves.

Well done to all the team, they didn't give an inch, and deserved their win.

Credit to the ref who was decent, and to Watford for not play acting like Norwich.

All in all a great day out.

Unless you're the Watford fan who got nicked

I've said it for a long time now that Yates is our best striker, and today is a perfect demonstration of why. None of our other strikers have the ability to do what Yates did for our third goal. And at Burnley just after we equalised he did an amazing turn that, had he scored, would've been an incredible goal. He has bags and bags of ability, he just hasn't had the rub of the green recently, and often the support and service from midfield has been poor. If he stays injury free I'd be amazed if he didn't comfortably get into double figures.

Madine was brilliant too btw.

Just watched the highlights big Gaz's goal was better than I thought (I was a long way away) Jerry's 2 strikes were both fantastic & seeing the second from a better angle wow. 😀

That first goal has been described as a scuffed shot by the Preston supporting Neil Mellor, which has then fed into a number of reports, including the BBC.

It was a lovely half volley, sweetly struck as a cursory glance at the highlights show clearly.

I posted yesterday pre-game that he needs to play down middle with better service.
Also, I noted before Tuesday’s game that he went round every player embracing them. What a fantastic attitude. I am sure his team mates yesterday were as delighted for him than just winning.
