Jordan Henderson...

Lay off him I say. He’s gone to play football in a Micky mouse league for a crazy amount of money, so what, it’s his life. If somebody offered me a million quid to go and work in Saudi Arabia for a year, I would park my morals and be on the flight in the morning and I think most people would
No problem with him going there but please do not take us for idiots.

Should not be considered to play for England after opting to play in a sub standard league which could ultimately damage all credible leagues it’s more Southgate that annoys me who just seems to thrive on the controversy of it all

He’s messed up, should have been honest and said I’m going for the money. As one of the best midfield players in the world why would you join that lot.
No one is going to remember him as a quality player now.
‘One of the best midfield players in the world’ .. sorry goose but you are really having a laugh. Good motivating Captain agreed, but skill set he’s always been average. Klopp and Southgate appreciated the former not the latter.

It’s amazing no top team ever targeted him!

The Wendies had him on loan as a teenager. Once you've played for the massivest club in the world no other team can be regarded as "top"

Shouldn’t be picked he’s playing in a sub standard league he’s been a good player in his time but he’s finished now. Pig headed Southgate will still pick him and Maguire though we’ll never win anything with him in charge blokes an absolute arsehead.

Yes, but we would still have the right to call you a **..

But most would agree it's for the money rather than the love of Al Camelshagger FC 🤷

We all know he went for the money and considering how rich he was in the first place it smacks of greed and even more so when it's basically cut his career short but....what's he supposed to say in an interview? Although it's true he can't just say 'well I just went for the money' No player in history has ever said that because its disrespectful to the club and fans you've signed for. Whether you like it or not he can never say that and no professional would . You'll only get that when he finishes playing.

Never been a natural pick for England for me despite his 80 caps.
Not facing top quality players weekly so can't be sharp enough.
He must have earned more money than he ever needed in the Prem.
Not bothered about his hypocrisy as its his conscience and reputation.
Don't insult the intelligence of footy fans by trying to justify it to himself.

Despite this, Southgate finds it 'unfathomable' why he is resented.
He must be selecting him on stubbornness and if he honestly can't see why fans are not happy he should go himself.
Grateful for what he has done but don't think he has the balls to make the hard/brave decisions when critical.

Also, as a fan of football, I want to see Greelish play more than a bit part.

Sorry for the long post, these are just my own thoughts 😊

It's odd that such an apparently poor player has garnered 80 international caps and captained Liverpool to victory in six different competitions, including the Premier League, Champions League and FIFA club world cup. Why have a succession of Liverpool and England managers failed to see how poor he is at football, when it's obvious to all he's not very good?

It's so obvious that he's only gone to the Arabs for the money, like all the others who've gone there. Before condemning him for that let's see what he does with it.

Please re-read my post above. There is no reference to him being a poor player other than a passing reference to my own preference.

Don’t apologise - good post

As Ive alluded to several times, its indisputable his value to Liverpool and to a certain extent England for his motivational skills (which I have to admit are good), and that is why hes been successful in obtaining honours. If anybody thinks that he has a skillset with football ability, then you need to concentrate on him playing in a match and study his stats for club and country over the years. They are abysmal and for him to be mooted as a top footballer in the same breath as Robson, Gerrard (who I really can't abide) and Lampard, people require therapy and need to ask themselves the question if they really know anything about football.

This is a player Brendan Rodgers wanted rid of and to my knowledge has attracted no or little interest from other clubs.

Good, maybe top Captain, very average player.

..and if posters think I'm off the mark with my comments, remember Mike Brearley in cricket?, average cricketer but a great Captain and that's why he was always picked...likewise Henderson.

Afternoon Bendit, so he wasn't playing for a top team in Liverpool?

Fair point Rusty, but as I pointed out on another thread, Brendan Rodgers wanted rid of him. To his credit he waited until Klopp was appointed and he realised his motivational value.

My post about a top team was directed to the fact no other team (than Liverpool) made offers (known to the public)

Yes Rodgers wanted rid. Apart from the pub league north of the border, he's hardly set the football world alight.
You could also say that no other top team has tried to buy Salah, Van Dijk or Alisson from Liverpool.
And they're certainly up with the very best.

I think you will find Rusty, that Salah and Van Dijk have attracted substantial 'interest'. I don't know if Alisson has or not to be perfectly honest. I agree those three are up with the very best. You know my views on Henderson.

The Brearley analogy is very pertinent and one I was going to use but my post had drivelled on for long enough. However I'd disagree that Brearley was just an average player. He captained an England team of absolute world class talents, and didn't shine as brightly as them. He wasn't world class as a batsman but he was well above average (his first class figures bear that out), and he was the greatest captain of all time - after Jardine of course in case there are any Australians reading this 😉 (sorry Kenny).

I havent looked, but I bet Henderson's goals scored, and goal assists for a free scoring team like Liverpool are well below par.
And probably the same for England.

I haven't looked, so I stand to be corrected.

In Salah's case, Barcelona and Chelsea, albeit that was unlikely as he'd played for them unsuccessfully before. At one time Real showed an interest in signing him, although to be fair they show an interest in everyone who played football...even me (only kidding on that one)
Actual bids or click bait social media/press rumours?

The Barcelona team (Mess, Xavi, Iniesta vintage) which were more free scoring than Liverpool and had a midfielder called Sergio Busquets.
He was quite rightly lauded as the player who allowed the flair players to play and score goals and was an important part of that Barcelona team.
He had a total of 20 goals in 765 appearances
Henderson had a total of 39 goals in 593 appearances
I don't remember Busquets ever being criticised for his lack of goals.
I don't remember Keith Southern being criticised for his zero goal tally in the Premier league season
Perhaps that's because people who really understand football know that it's a team game and it's the sum of the parts
rather than the individual that's more important.

Thats exactly why I concede he is a very good Captain. Nobody will ever convince me he was a very good footballer, because he wasn't, and isn't.

Top bit of googling Rusty 👍 ;)

Henderson is not on the same footballing planet as Busquets...what was his assists out of interest?

Yes some top googling 😁
Good to debate Bendit. I just wish sometimes we could debate something
other than your skewed and somewhat flawed views of Henderson 😉

Now then Rusty, tut tut. No agreed there's too much abuse between some posters so it's a welcome change to have some good banter....we could always debate Politics 😁

He was far better than being a very average player. Brad Potts, Nathan Jones, Paul Dalglish are 3 very average current or former pro footballers. But actually are decent at their own level. Henderson is way way above them. In fact to call him very average is utter nonsense. Is he Gazza? No. But no English player ever has been.
