Jordan Rhodes

Is Jordan Rhodes one of the most natural finishers we've had at this club?

Kevin Phillips? DJ Campbell? I can't think of many more in my lifetime I'd rate higher.

Zero chance he'll be with us after January so the club really need to start looking around for what we do in that scenario.

He’s a goodun for sure but not sure about zero chance of retaining him.

He's already played for Huddersfield this season, so it's a similar situation to Bowler last year, if they recall him they can only play him themselves, they can't sell him or loan him out anywhere else.

With luck, maybe we'll turn it into a permanent move in January.

He's always been class in the championship so no reason why he wouldn't do it in league 1. If we create for him, you know he'll score a lot of goals.

Also feel confident he'll be here all season but let's see.

Bob Hatton, Tony Ellis, Dave Bamber all scored plenty in my time. I'd rate Hatton as the best of those 3, but I was only 12 when he left the club. Rhodes is a great player still, I hope we can sign him at the end of the season - there is still life in the old dog,

What a game that was
The past is a strange place, they do things differently there!
I was selling programs at that game, went in the south afterwards, ended up on the floor when the Hatton bullet header went in, it was like a shot I seem to remember. It seems like a dream now,
We could have had 10, Gordon Taylor played in that game too. Great post, many thanks,

He goes back to the championship in a struggling team approaching 34 and he stops scoring, he's at the right level.

Reminds me so much of Kevin Philips who was also superb for us, a class act and fox in the box.
In some ways I think he is better for us in this division than Phillips was a division higher. Both very good at what they do.

It's well known throughout his career he's not been rated as a lone striker. Sides in the Championship and above often play that way so it would mean Huddersfield adapting their style to give him a chance to do well. I doubt they would do that for a 34 year old returnee.

We were having this conversation in the ground. Nothing like this since Kevin Phillips and better than Dj at finishing.

We need to make a reasonable offer to buy him. He's way too good for this division.

I don’t think that Huddersfield will recall him , they know all about his ability & probably a tad too slow for the Championship, but great for us at League One level 🍊

Players tend to do well when they are happy with their surroundings, their colleagues… maybe he just likes the seaside and the poker nights with Jimmy Husband!

Think even those most optimistic about his signing couldn't have predicted how well he's done so far.

Looks like he's really enjoying his football and obviously craves goals like a basking shark craves plankton, can't see him wanting to go back.

Agree with this, if it comes to January and he’s still firing and Hudders want him I can see us easily paying a fee since he only has a few months left.

At 33, he’s already made a small fortune so I suspect he wouldn’t care much where he plays so long as he continues his form, which would be with us.

Fantastic. Walsh and Hatton probably the best striking partnership in my time as a supporter.
Both so strong, and both great in the air and on the ground, and both
also two footed.
Great memories, but sadly also just before the rot set in.

I think he will be here all season. We don’t want to sign him permanently in my opinion as he will be fine in Div 1 but would struggle when we are back in the Championship next season 😉
As long as you get the ball to him he’ll thrive .

The younger lads can do the tracking back and the hard stuff .

Get the ball to Rhodes and he ll finish it off . He’s a master of his craft .

Just needs the right system.

yep, agree. He's doing much better than I expected. And you make the very key point about the right system. And the right system is not as a lone target man up front. He needs the benefit of some-one alongside him preferably a big man. Yesterdays finish deserves more credit than perhaps people realise. It could have been just as easy for him to stick his chest in and try and get out of the way of the shot but his instinct made him do what he did.

Thought the comment in reference to his goal from Steve Evans was a bit disingenuous... Suggesting that it all happened so quickly that Rhodes knew nothing of it.... Absolutely no question that he reacts and sticks out his chest to purposefully make contact and redirect the ball. Not for the first time this season it almost seems like JR has the ability to slow down time Matrix style 😂

As another poster states other players would have pulled their chest in or tried to bring it down .

It’s just instinct with him . No amount of training can turn you into doing that sort of stuff .

You’ve either got it or you haven’t . .

Our problem is more likely to be another club looking at his goal return and going in with a transfer and wages offer we can’t compete with.

They can't. He can only play for us or Huddersfield in England.
I must add the caveat, "I think".

He played for Huddersfield in the EFL cup, I think that's sufficient to trigger the Fifa/UEFA two club rule, but I wouldn't want to give the impression I'm absolutely certain on this.
