Kenny Dougall

He does everything you need from a DM, almost perfectly, week in week out.
When you're playing two in the middle you need someone with more influence on the outcome of the match. Can't afford to be carrying people who pass five yards left or right.

We struggle to keep possession because we usually we have just two in midfield with Bowler, Keshi and others staying wide. I'd prefer a 433 set up with Bowler one of the 3 upfront - and 3 decent midfielders - Kenny one of them.

I agree you can't have 11 superstars but what does he actually do apart from a few side ways passes? League one Gareth Barry.
Apart from the dirty stuff, he's one of those players that can get the ball on the ground and provide a bit of calm when it's all hurly burley. Two or three times set bowler on his way yesterday, the same for CJ and at least one good throughball for lavery to get on the end of. He's not a hyper creative player but he knows how to pick a pass.

Yes ideally you need somebody who does the dirty and the basic stuff consistently and calmly, and somebody who can link up to the attack and get to the edge of the box when needed. We’re missing the latter player for sure right now, but that doesn’t change the fact that Kenny is excellent at what he does. He is just missing a creative partner.

I have to say I'm scratching my head reading this one. Did we not see the first time slide rule pass for Lavery in the first half when Lavery stung the keepers hands, or the absolutely class diagonal out to Bowler in the second? Couple with that, his positioning was fantastic throughout, calm and solid on the ball for 90 minutes - a Rolls Royce of a defensive midfielder and performance. I suspect Keogh and Ekpiteta wouldn't agree he's average, he keeps so much trouble away from our defence just by reading the game so well. He was MOTM IMO.

Gets about the pitch as he always does but technically is shown up at Championship level for me.

Yes, that’s exactly what I mean, he’s an excellent League1 midfielder, but a lower end Championship midfielder and his technical deficiencies are shown up at this level.

I appreciate that for some people certain players have this weird immunity to criticism but the fact is if we want to progress again players like KD will have to become squad players rather than guaranteed starters.

Thought Dougall was a bit of a mixed bag today actually. Scuffed his volley at goal and gave the ball away a number of times, but he got through an enormous amount of work in the middle of the park. He is definitely a huge asset to the team, but not quite at his best today.

Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't it Kenny that gave the pass of the season to Bowler for his goal???
AND he took some pretty decent corners today (not had many of thosethis season) including his other "goal assist" for Gary today.
They were the icing on the cake on top of his normal solid, workmanlike performance.

Man of the Match today for me
Man of the Match today for me.
Said that to my mates…well I hope they are😉…equally one said difficult to pick anyone of them as it was a thoroughly good all round team performance on a difficult day of weather and a pitch that was obviously hard work in those conditions.
Players from both sides looked completely knackered at the end.

…and finally where have all those twats writing off, nay abusing CJ just a few days ago.
….and a special mention also for Thorniley…another who was on the ball today.

Only negative is the amount of times he gave the ball away needlessly... but then again he won it back a fair few as well

Jeez! I remember him losing, not giving away, the ball twice and helped to instantly rectify that.
My unsung Player of the Season so far for consistancy, contribution and class.
He passed it directly to their player at least 3 times. I'm not saying he was shit, I actually think he played very well, but he definitely did give possession back to them 3 times at least. If you actually read my post I did also say that he helped to win it back many times as well, and ofcourse he chipped in with some uncharacteristic assists as well!

Did you watch a different game to the rest of us ? Lavery didn’t play 😜

Hmm, slightly random reply, because while Lavery certainly did not play yesterday, he did play (and score) on the 22nd January which is when I made that comment you're replying to! :)

Kenny's corners were excellent. Even the near post one was awkwardly dangerous and had to be dealt with.
