Until the start of the season; so what do we reckon the team against Stoke is going to be?
I’m going

Maxwell
Turton Ekpeteta Thornily Husband(c)
Ward Robson Anderson
Sarkic Yates Kaikai

Sims, Howe, Nottingham, Virtue, Hamilton, Nuttall, Madine

I am so far behind with us as a team at the moment, I don't even know where Antwi plays!
Central defensive midfield player. Looked very good for me in pre-season. Obviously has Robson as competition who may be ahead of him in pecking order if we only play one CDM.

My take is that Antwi looks really good but is only 18 and won't be a first choice. Initially at least. Robson and Virtue likely to be ahead of him. Maybe Williams too. But he may force his way in, he has composure and looks after the ball well. Against L2 teams, at least.

From what I've seen Antwi is more than comfortable on the ball, good positional sense in giving then receiving short passes back but I didn't see him really join in further up the pitch. Robson & Virtue offer more going forward at the moment I think.

Agree. I don't class Virtue and Antwi as competing for the same place. Virtue is a box to box player whereas Antwi sits and holds. Think Robson will start with the shirt as the CDM link up player - just as Spearing did.

I actually believe that he will start this game with the keeper we signed today as it's a cup game.
It's also our last scheduled game before our first league match, though, and we are still working on the defending aspect of our game at a pretty fundamental level, so I suspect we will want to put out a strong defence with our first choice keeper, to build the familiarity.

Maxwell
LOAN, LOAN, Husband, Mitchell (assuming he signs)
Ward, robson, Anderson
Hamilton, Yates, Kaikai

SUBS: Fojitcek, Thorniley, Turton, Sarkic, Virtue, Madine (Nottingham, Antwi, Shaw, Williams)

Ward and Anderson are very attacking players. Gives us a lack of balance IMHO. Especially with our defence and Robson being with us for about 2 weeks.

Agree to some extent but the thing is both are very mobile and cover a lot of ground...our system is going to be about three words workrate workrate workrate

A big imposing experienced centre half is a must for me but maybe NC thinks a mobile midfield player like Williams can fit the bill...I am happy to trust the manager and he hasnt done anything yet I strongly disagree with and that includes Callum Macdonald

Virtue, Robson, Anderson worked well in the second half against Everton, I thought. Everton had recovered but we held them pretty well. I felt NC made the change to bring Virtue on to help stabilise, and it seemed to work.

I honestly believe Virtue will be a bit part player this year but we will see...if we have better than him on the park then we have improved and everyone is happy

I'm not sure. Virtue puts a lot of work in, gets up and down, and scores a few goals too, pretty good finisher. Ward doesn't do enough, yet, for me. But he's vastly improved from last season already. But away to Stoke I can't see us having 5 attacking players on the pitch, basically. Could be wrong!

I think that team is too leaky at the back rekt but its a game of opinions...Big Marv is very very green and uncomfortable with the ball at his feet but I agree he needs game time...I would think about a loan to Div 2 side maybe depending on how many second string games we get

To be honest as I’ve said before I want us to sign an experienced, tall, leader of men type at centre back. To partner Thorniley through the season. Marv then won’t be thrown in.

That was my team for the Stoke game as even if we signed a defender today I dont believe Critchley would throw someone in without time on the training ground with the squad.

I hope Thorniley is good enough but long term I have doubts over all the back 4 especially Turton . I think Virtue will be good sub but just short of the first team.

Turton is pretty solid, for me. Unspectacular but organised and reliable. Marv had an almost full season in League 2 last season. Do we know enough about Thorniley? I don't.

I reckon 2 or 3 more defenders will come in.

Virtue will be starting regularly and rightly so. Criminally underrated by some fans, while others are hyped up beyond belief.
The lad gets up and down the pitch and scores some great goals.

Virtue was very good at the end of the season when he had better players around him in KDH and Ronan I'd expect him to be a stalwart in our side a 7 seven out of ten week in week out with an occasional 8/9.
