Liverpool fans boo the national anthem

I just walked past a street party in Poulton. There was a buzz of excitement and enjoyment. It was lovely to see.

I suppose itā€™s a choice. You can live a happy positive life, or wallow in and spread misery, jealousy, resentment and divisiveness.

I know what I prefer.

By the way, I support free speech so I wouldnā€™t deny anyone the right to voice their dissent or the right to peacefully and lawfully protest.
Iā€™m not comfortable with the police arresting protestors merely for displaying banners.

One is factual though and one is an opinion.

It isnā€™t an opinion heā€™s your king. Itā€™s your opinion you oppose the monarchy. Personally I couldnā€™t give a shit either way as it literally doesnā€™t affect my life one bit.

Just had you a down as a bit more intelligent than to join the ā€œNot my kingā€ bollox that has cropped up in the last 24 hours.

Letā€™s be honest BFC x 3, the majority of those screaming ā€œnot my kingā€ are nothing more than career protestors. Itā€™ll be the next thing to be upset about tomorrow.

But I am sure everyone will be protesting today and going to work as normal tomorrow?
Thereā€™s nothing ā€˜Factualā€™ about itā€¦ Itā€™s a bloke in Fancy Dress.

The ā€˜Not My Kingā€™ response is a natural and legitimate retort to the goons who seem to want to inflict this idiot and the whole nonsense that goes with him onto the rest of us.

If people want to play along with the Pantomime, then thatā€™s their choice. Itā€™s certainly not the intelligent choice though and it is a morally abhorrent choice, so letā€™s be clear about it.

Morally abhorrent to you. And youā€™re welcome to your opinion. But it sounds like an extreme one which I doubt you can justify.

Itā€™s just morally abhorrent generally. Thereā€™s no morally acceptable justification at all.

Iā€™m not saying I donā€™t understand or ā€˜getā€™ why people are sucked into it, nor all of the ā€˜financialā€™, ā€˜tourist basedā€™, ā€˜pomp and ceremonyā€™ justifications that are always bandied about at times like these, howeverā€¦.

Ultimately the principle of Monarchy, the assumption of power based on birth right is repugnant and Iā€™m afraid thereā€™s no getting away from that.

Course it did, do you honestly think we wouldn't have been invaded if we were on mainland Europe? It was 100% down to geography due to the logistics of amphibious landings.
If we were on the mainland (silly proposition because we aren't), I'd hazard a guess it'd be us rampaging around Europe needing to be repelled.

I don't doff my cap nor tug my forlelocks. I'd guess the monarchy have little or no impact on your life whatsoever yet you want to live a life full of hatred.
Donā€™t do the ā€˜hā€™ word. Hope those who love the Royals had a great dayā€¦.I just despair at the cost of it all when food banks are losing funding and people are living in abject poverty; no hate just my opinion.

The cost is astronomical of course, but life goes on despite all the many social problems the country has, It's easy and relevant to state issues like food banks etc but poverty has always been an issue but there's still a great many people packing pubs out etc and just getting on with life despite all these problems. It was a very special occasion with all the pomp and something we in this country do very well and long may it continue like that.

We actually rampaged all over the world many decades before.
A bit of water didn't stop the English yet a thin strip of water prevented the Nazis from claiming Europe.
Phew, thank god for the English ChannelšŸ¤Æ

Is there an element of hypocrisy and double standards? People raise the question of poverty and food banks. Don't know if Liverpool is one of the worst areas in that respect but hey they are all for putting on a good show with Eurovision. No expense spared with regards to cost no doubt.

Obviously the French (with their bollocks) decide its better to chop women and children's heads off.
Unfortunately when Adolf came marching through their country, the majority of the bollocks carriers all shrivelled up and rolled overšŸ¤·
Case of pick and choose when to have big bollocks eh!!
No, Pierre Big Bollocks doesnā€™t quite have the same ring to it, does it!

Spot on. And imagine not using your natural defences to even up the fight a bit lol.

The battle for France lasted for 46 days, the British evacuated at Dunkirk after 17 days of defeat.

The French army was completely compromised by the high command ignoring reports of the approach through the Ardennes. Despite this the French fought a land war for a further month in their own country.

They in no way capitulated and the reason we never refer to their continuing battle is because we are conscious we backed out and left them to fight alone.

Theres good reason why we never discuss the Battle for France but are happy to focus entirely on the Dunkirk miracle.

Fair Play to them for not being weak lily livered hooray Henry's. They're standing up for something they belive in when they feel Thatchers government let them down badly, almost to rot in the 80's and with Hillsborough which again they were let down with.

I have Scouse relatives. They all to a man hate the way the city was let down. At least they believe in something.
Was Thatcher the queen?

Thatā€™s a rather selective rendering of the Battle for France. The German push through the Ardennes was targeted at the boundary between the French and British armies initially aimed at Paris. The Germans then wheeled north towards the Channel ports concentrating their fire power on driving the British back and using a thin shield on their southern front holding the French in place.

The French had thought they would go straight for Paris and so had pulled their forces back in that direction having initially tried and failed to stop the breakthrough. The British attacked the northern flank of the German advance with slow tanks but were outnumbered and outpaced. After that, being surrounded, the only option was to evacuate to fight another day. Thatā€™s me being selective, too.

Perhaps more relevant to this thread was the behaviour of the ex-King Edward VIII, the Duke of Windsor who was definitely a Nazi sympathiser and is now thought to have been sending them information about British government intentions. He fled to the south of France disobeying Churchillā€™s instructions and only fell into line when threatened with a court martial and imprisonment.

For the record, I believe he was possibly a Leyton Orient supporter, while the late Queen Elizabeth II was an Arsenal fan.

I am British and no heā€™s notā€¦ I wrote to the Queen personally a number of years ago to confirm my legal position on the matter of opting out.
Well that was a waste of a postage stamp. Imagine taking the time to write to YOUR queen to say you don't want her to be your queen, as though she'll write back to say she's sorry to see you leave and is there an incentive to offer to make you stay. It's not a marketing mailing list or a mobile phone subscription. You can feel whatever you like in your heart but it doesn't change the fact that they are YOUR Royal Family.

I didnā€™t write to her to say ā€œI didnā€™t want herā€

I simply gave her notice to formally clarify my status in order to avoid any confusion.

Not to mention that the heroic defence of Lille by the French bought us extra time to prepare the evacuation.
After Lille fell, the French that managed to escape, and other French made up the rearguard whilst the evacuation took place.
40,000 of them were left at Dunkirk.
If the French had had no balls, the BEF would never had escaped.

Well, the French resisted in Lille for about 4 days. But it was not really the French, it was a 1000-strong battalion of Senegalese troops, with a few small pioneer units.

To add injury to insult, two weeks after the French had surrendered and signed an armistice with Germany the Royal Navy shelled the French fleet at Mars-el-Kebir on 3rd July 1940, blowing up a battleship, severely damaging two more capital ships and several smaller ones. 1300 French sailors were killed.

All to stop the ships falling into German hands because the arrogant French admiral, Darlan, refused to sail them to safety in the West Indies. That was viewed as dastardly ruthlessness and caused French animosity for many years afterwards. Thatā€™s why many of the French prefer to think that the Americans liberated them in 1944

Didnā€™t know that, it makes you understand to some extent, why the French donā€™t appear to like us, and as a result, we donā€™t like them.

There was about 40,000 French at Lille. It did include some African troops, But the vast majority were mainland French. There were about 35,000 prisoners taken at Lille.
No arguments with the rest.

The French High Command failed the ordinary soldier with their decisions. The French Army outnumbered the Germans in men but their tactics were doomed to failure. Tanks were not mobilised en masse and retreats were ordered in most cases where they could have stood and fought. After France was defeated the Germans discovered to their delight many planes, artillery, tanks, and other equipment that had never even been used in battle.

Iā€™ve just done some googling to make sure I wasnā€™t mistaken, and found that apart from Churchill praising the defence, saying it was a major factor in us escaping Dunkirk, the Germans granted the French prisoners ā€˜honours of warā€™. They were allowed to march through Lille, with German soldiers stood to attention, in respect, as they passed. Hitler threw a track, apparently.
Historians reckon that by distracting 7 German divisions, the French saved 100,000 British lives.

I donā€™t think we disagree; I was referring to the siege of Lille citadel defended by the Senegalese, which lasted 4 days.
The 40,000 French troops covered the whole of the Lille region, from the Dutch border in the north down past Calais and Bologna to Abbeville at the mouth of the Somme and as far south inland as far as Arras, probably 3,000 sq miles.
