Lousy time to be in the EU

Personally, I don't care much for slugs, amphibians and old cheese. I'll take roast beef and yorkshire pudding every time thanks.
Each to their own, I usually find a varied diet is healthier but enjoy the roast dinner as you turn up the central heating in April and look out of your window at a leaden grey sky😉

The problem with our vaccine strategy is it relies on wholesale cooperation, there are 68m of us in a world of 8 billion. Will the vaccination programme work when we are a tiny fraction of the world population.

We are a tiny proportion of the world population and the vaccination programme is working.

For how long with 7.9bn+ people unvaccinated and the chance of mutations. How can you state it's working three months in? It's a bit early to say that isn't it......let's reconvene in 12 months, I hope you're right.

Empire building never worked long term, Rome, British empire etc, there’s too many at the committee table with different agendas.

“In the long term” how long is your long term? The Roman empire lasted 400+ years, nearly 1500 if you include the eastern one as some historians do these days. By your yardstick nothing ‘works’ in the long term.

Also are you comparing how the Roman empire functioned (which changed dramatically throughout its lifespan) to the EU? Or even the British empire? Crikey.

Also what qualifies as “working”? Many empires led to huge levels of human cooperation and access to large resources that was previously unprecedented, and subsequently often allowed rapid development in technology and economy, that would have been impossible otherwise.

I can say with confidence that the UK's vaccination programme is working three months in because our infection rates and hospitalisations are going down significantly while Germany goes into lockdown again with a death rate of 300 a day, with France locking down and shipping out victims from Paris as its hospitals are full and Italy struggling to cope with a third wave of infections. The reason why our programme is working is because we've rolled out considerably more vaccinations than those three countries together.

I agree that at this point in time we are doing well comparitively to other European nations but shandy is right to still err on the side of caution. Still a way to go yet before we as a nation are out of the woods and of course we need the whole world population to be hopefully virus free too.

I've read this morning that the antics of the EU leaders in trying to undermine the az vaccine has had knock on effects around the world, but particularly in Africa. It mentioned problems in Ghana and Uganda where locals were saying they deserved a proper vaccine rather than one that didn't work. All this after the makers of the av vaccine have provided it at cost price to the third world countries.

How will VDL, Macron and all there cohorts feel when they are accused of causing preventable deaths from happening due to non vaccination of local populations?

No doubt they will not be held to account.

Slightly worrying news is that 10% of new French cases are from the SA variant, it's only a matter of time before it arrives here.
It's unclear what protection the vaccines provide against this.

It’s a struggle to quickly gather data reliably on how the vaccines perform on protecting us from any mutations. This is where we should all be working together. Not the vaccine scramble & politicking we’re seeing. It really doesn’t surprise me though.

No, they won't be held to account, despite the high death rates they are personally responsible for. Maybe Catinstalbans will want to comment on the innumerable unnecessary deaths caused inside and outside of Europe by three EU leaders, or maybe it's not a matter of concern because Boris can't be blamed.

Today we hear that some European countries are now not recommending the AZ vaccine to under 50s because of the risks to the young. But there are no significant risks. Everyone knows that. Did these very same countries choose to not roll out the AZ vaccine to over 50s last month for the same reason? How many more lives are they prepared to sacrifice in order to save their own necks?

As many as necessary.

There has to be serious doubt about the Euro's ability to survive the pandemic, the extra debt and damage to economic activity is likely to push some of the larger countries over the edge.

Knock on effects of the collapse of the Euro plus anger at the vaccine programme, who knows what'll happen next.
Geert wilders will win in Holland the EU IS TOAST
le pen will be French president the EU IS TOAST
There's a refendum in Italy the EU IS TOAST

I believe the EU has continued vaccinating people, just not with AZ for a couple of days. I’ve read that the Scandinavian countries are still not using AZ. Norway in particular, which I believe is not in the EU, attribute 5 serious cases to this vaccine.
