Lowest football moment

I'm possibly an exception here, but I didn't mind the Torquay defeat because I'd seen us play at Wembley, something I never imagined I ever would. A once in a lifetime experience that was repeated 12 months later then on many subsequent occasions.
I'd done nearly every game that season and the thought of traipsing around the same miserable grounds for another season was very depressing

Listening on the radio trying to find out the score from the Cardiff vs. Orient game in 1978. Even though I knew it would be a "fixed" result with Orient winning away after losing 6 out of their last 8 away games it was still devastating after being so close to promotion the season before. This was followed by virtually 30 years of mainly hurt although there was a few bright spots (Billy Ayre) along the way
Cardiff had an excellent home record that season beating most of the top teams. The Cardiff and Orient managers were best mates. That's what I read anyway

Losing at home to Hartlepool in 82/3,plus points deduction meant we had to apply for re-election. Regular crowds of under 2thousand and all the shit that came with 80s football.
Fans who aren’t old enough to remember those days wouldn’t believe that you could avoid relegation out of the football league if you had good mate’s who happened to be chairmen of other clubs

Can see some people saying it’s the worst they’ve seen us play which isn’t even close, even recently under Grayson and Mcphillips was far worse - what IS the lowest football moment? Taking away off the field issues - the one time you thought ‘this isn’t good for me’
There’s so many , certainly more lows than highs - I think it we’re losing in the F A Cup at Donny in Dec 1980 under a certain Mr A Ball - that was really, really bad and the reality of our woes was sinking in fast !

Agree with all the horrible moments mentioned on here.

Will add Walsall away in 1991.
Had a terrific run under Billy Ayre and confident we would win that game as Walsall had nothing to play for.
We took a decent following of at least 5K.

Lost 2-0 and knew something would go wrong in Play Offs
Following season it was repeated at Lincoln. Fortunately won Play Off final.

Walsall did us again in 1996 under Allardyce. Again knew we had blown it.

Lowest for me was Man Utd away when we were relegated from the Prem. All of the great moments that season - and the naff ones (Fulham away) - just made it a brilliant season. And there we were, clinging on over those last few games and now it had gone. Once it got to 4-2 I just went round the back of the stand and moped about. I didn't watch the end of the match. Went for a couple of pints afterwards with mates but my heart wasn't in it.

I had expected us to lose to Brighton away last match of the '78 season but when some time later it dawned on me that we were to be relegated courtesy of other league results that dropped us into the third division, when the season had started so well.
It just never needed to have happened, but alas it did, leading to long term consequences.

Yes, we were definitely stitched up but tbh it probably just speeded up our inevitable descent down the league. Burnley, Blackburn and PKE went through similar phases as attendances fell and the big city clubs took over.

I think the lowest moment was probably the Huddersfield game at home that got abandoned, because it was my final game prior to boycotting. At that point, I along with everyone else had no idea if I'd ever get to see Blackpool at Bloomfield Rd again. There was no way of telling - the Oyston family could've feasibly been owner for another 50+ years. That was truly depressing, and I'd say life changing in the sense that I started to think what I'd do on Saturdays now that football wasn't a part of it, having been a major part for so long.

Anyone thinking of not going to Wigan because we're at a 'low ebb' ought to read this thread and have a re-think.

1967/8 season, thousands of us went to last game of season at Huddersfield we beat them 3-1, only to hear QPR also won at Villa meaning they were promoted to the old First Division by .3 of a goal as it was decided on goal average back then. We were 15 at the time and at the height of teenage angst, no words to describe how devastated we were!
That is mine too, Levi. I felt bad after Torquay although I can't remember much of the match, having drunk too much beforehand in the Harrow Tavern, and Bradford was bad, but to win and then have it taken away is the worst feeling ever.

Worse for me was being on holiday ,the year after the devastation of the horror at Wembley ,and missing the win against Scunthorpe ,well pissed me of cause i was not there.

Yeh it was KT, on the other hand 2 seasons later was probably the best feeling ever, sending the nobbers down and us getting promoted! 😂

Games where I was in the crowd
Luton at home in the 6th round of the FA Cup probably in the 50’s, we could only draw and lost the replay. Billy Bingham and I think Alan Brown, formerly of Pool were playing for them. Thought we were going to win the cup that year so as a young lad I was very disappointed.
Peterborough away when we were relegated to Division 2. Up early on then lost 4-1. Took my 6 year old grandson and he’s never been since and I’m not surprised as it was awful!

I was at Huddersfield too, well gutted. We had run onto pitch at the end of the game to celebrate promotion only for the manual scoreboard to tell us a late goal had screwed us elsewhere. Think it was QPR but not sure.

It was waiting a fortnight to find out that really meant it didn't sink in. One more point and we would have been 14th

Yep, I was going to post the same. We were stitched up good and proper by a very convenient draw.
I went to University with a Cardiff fan and he was adamant, for 3 years, that the game was fair. On our final day, he came up to me and admitted that the game was clearly rigged. He was not a person to make such statements unless true,

It was a no brainier for both teams, we all knew it was going to happen but we were helpless, head and shoulders above anything else for the lowest moment personally.

Bradford. Numb. We've never been as dominant as a side over the course of a season as then. To lose like that was just shocking.

Brentford away in the Riga/Clark season. There was the odd time that season where we competed in games and looked like a poor Championship. The Brentford game (and I'm sure there were others) just showed how much below the level we were. There were players in that game who won't have played league football again, let alone Championship football.

Gillingham away. Dear Old Muggers season. Nothing particularly unusual about the game, but the atmosphere in the away stand was toxic, with a clear divide amongst fans that was boiling over and borderline (and justified) paranoia that we were being filmed by the 'performance team' in order for the Scum to sue more supporters.

Didn't feel too great when my old man keeled over at Huddersfield this season, but we both agreed that the win more than made up for it.
Funny you should mention that Gillingham toxic atmosphere. I was getting a half time coffee and made a comment about the regime. I really got verbally attacked by a mushroom. I’m not a shrinking violet, but it did seem strange and so I managed restraint

First away game with my Dad on Standerwicks coach.

Without a doubt Udders away ‘68. From ecstatic to despair in minutes.

We were already to a large extent doomed before the game( they were about to celebrate winning the league and no ref was ever going to disappoint their cretinous supporters )but yes it was a hard pill to swallow especially as we had played some of the best football I have ever witnessed that season but then we also had the infamous ref when we were up at home against them who denied possibly the most obvious penalty ever and to cap it all a clearly offside goal that was not disallowed which sealed a totally underserved win for Manure.

Wembley against Torquay was pretty bad, and to rub salt in my mum had no orange wool so knitted me and my mate white and brown-ish bobble hats to wear.

Halifax away, we were cruising at 3-1 up and lost 5-3.

Choice of two for me with Bradford play off game being hard to swallow and then the loss to Torquay at the old Wembley. Has to be the Torquay one, as we were on a coach that struggled to get down there and took many hours to get home doing 30/40 mph max all the way.

Torquay play off for me. I was working in Harrogate that week, rocked up at work on the Friday morning and an hour later a mate comes up and tells me my car is on fire, f$$k off, I'm going to Wembley later was my prompt reply. No, it's really on fire was my mates response!! As the bosses son, my dad said you can take the van. Believe me Harrogate to Wembley, Wembley to the Gold Coast is a long way in a Transit van with no 2nd gear, no radio, no headrest & on your own. If Carlsberg did shit days☹️
