M55 near pointless new junction Westbound

Travelling Westbound from scumtown, just before the new totally pointless motorway junction, there are three excavations, into the banks to the side of the motorway, using huge "Lego" concrete blocks as retaining walls, & they have enormous concrete piles in front of them... I can't think what they are for, but must be very heavy, looks like they went down a good 20m, with about a 1.2m diameter... & each area has about 6 piles...

At first I thought maybe a small bridge, but there is nothing on the Eastbound verge...

Any thoughts??

How do you know they went 20m down.

The spur down to Carnforth off the M6 is no more than a mile long and is classified as a separate Mway
The Mancunian Way is also classed as a minor motorway but is two miles long…..oh and possibly the most dangerous entry slip road imaginable if you join it Salford bound at the A34 junction.Your safest bet is to join it when the there is a traffic jam. They have reduced the speed limit from 50 to 30 but nobody seems to comply.
I was going in the opposite direction on tuesday keeping to the 30 when an effing coach driver came up behind me at clearly well over 30 mph and had the audacity to flash his lights for me to get out of the way then glared at me when I let him pass.Just hope the cameras were working and caught him.

Same passing the pointless junction, I was doing 55mph, & a big Merc is right up my backside, flashing me to get out the way? So of course I slow down to exactly 50, & he passes me on the inside & flies off at about 70plus? Where's plod when you need him? Also why Eastbound do we need cones from one side to the other 3miles Before any works? In Spain there would be a man with a board 20yds before the junction & it would work, elf n safety gone mad...

The length of those road works are a joke either side ….and ok I only use it on match day Saturdays but I never see anyone actually working on either side.We must be the worst country in the world for building anything in quick time,in fact even on scheduled time.We are masters of “ the over run “.

Like a 4billion. Yes billion!!! overspend on a station on the Elizabeth line in that London, an overspend more than the whole rest of the country has had for transport infrastructure in that time

With regard to the M55. It’s a bridge that’s being built.
Thought the bridge for crossing traffic was already well in progress…..if it’s a pedestrian one then why the xxxx did they knock down the existing one and in doing so shut the xxxxxxx motorway when we had a home game meaning we had to drive through xxxxxxx Preston to get to and from Blackpool for the likes of me ( adding over an hour to my normal journey on both ways and for the away supporters when the area around the Docks or going out or into Preston had its own set of major roadworks going on.
…..as for the proposed siting of the super Mosque at the existing Broughton Junction they have to be kidding…..no doubt further disruption for that area and the motorway traffic.0EF161ED-5D50-43DE-AE84-E3433703FC13.jpeg

On the plus side I've never seen a single police car and there's no speed cameras...

Whist I agree there appears to be no visible signs of cameras i for one am not prepared to take the risk of getting done for doing 70 in a 50 mile an hour zone and nor should others especially as those two lanes that are open are surrounded by concrete when not bollards…and there is always the risk of a camera on one of the bridges or pull ins in the area.

When the motorway is finished is that stretch going to be "smart" with the hard shoulder being used as an extra lane?
In which case where the excavations maybe emergency stop areas?

The M96 is the shortest motorway in the UK - but the public won't ever get to drive it, the M96 isn't a public motorway.
It's a mini mock motorway based at a Fire Service College in Moreton-in-Marsh. Its purpose is to train blue light emergency workers in how to deal with major traffic incidents, so you're unlikely to ever drive on it.

..and in a place where it is of no benefit to the majority of residents.
part of the master plan for cottam, fulwood, broughton, Barton to effectively merge into a one massive blob, with the intention of eventually (although it’ll never happen) joining up accross the river at howick cross.

Considering there are so many roads that have needed to be built over the years, this one came out of nowhere, without a current need, just the future need of the above "blob" of housing being built... How long have we needed the St Annes link that is finally being built, I have know about the need there for 30yrs, & the Fleetwood link road probably needed for 40yrs or so.....

I don't think it came out of nowhere considering that the junctions were numbered 1, 3 and 4 when the M55 was originally built. I think that indicates that a future need for a junction west of Preston was identified back then and whilst the Western Distributor does unlock land for housing it also improves connections from the Warton to the Strategic Road Network.

Not near Preston though. That's the only criterion for getting funding for roads.

Junction 2 was originally left for a service station just outside Kirkham.
