Marvin back to being Marvellous šŸ‘

Pleased for Marv. Some great defending and that probably wasnā€™t even him at 50% effort.

Thought he was lucky not to concede a pen though. Thoughts?

Marv is a monster defender ! ...I think we all know that šŸ§”. Beckenbauer he aint. Then again, that's how like I like at least one of my Centre Halves. He throws himself in front of anything whenever it occurs. Never less than 100% šŸ’Ŗ

But he canā€™t do the keep ball Critchley wants him to do. Pennington will be back in for sure.

I think we all know if we want a rock solid defence then we need to revert to a back four, that being=
Pennington Ekpiteta Casey Husband
The extra defender would make us so much harder to beat.instead of Dale or CJ pretending to be wing backs.
In the last few weeks we have conceded important goals through our wing backs switching off.
Thompson and Dale being the culprits.

He was outstanding tonight and he had plenty of the ball at his feet too. Tonight the players around him worked hard to to get into space and offer an out ball. Easy passes and he was fine. He reminded me of Evatt tonight. Marvellous!

Ekpiteta has a bit more pace than Casey , I'd like to see Marv get a bit more game time as not too long ago he was the best defender at the club

Evatt? Calm down, there's no comparison. In either game last week he'd have conceded a penalty with that challenge. Yesterday's ref let a lot go without punishment, including a penalty for us when Carey was bundled over. I love Marv like everybody else, but I recognise his limitations.

Absolutely fantastic to see. Some his blocks were outstanding. I don't think he's defended particularly badly this season to be honest.

I think there's a bit of 6 of one and half a dozen of the other about the choice at the back.

Thought he was outstanding tonight, plus thought Paul Robinson was an excellent co commentator
He was good.

Seemed like he'd done some *actual research* on both teams as well which is nice to see an ex pro bothering to actually find out information as opposed to just trotting out cliches and relying on the authority their career gives them.

Brett is allowed to say 'it's one of those Chizz' though because Brett is Brett.

Maybe play Pennington Husband and Ekpiteta and don't look to Ekpiteta to be the play maker at the back.
No reason why Pennington couldn't play centre of the three and Ekpiteta on the right.
I think penningtons distribution can be a bit ropey at times. Out of all of the defenders the player with the best distribution is saint james of husband - pity we dont have another left sided defender to allow him to play there, or even as the holding mid if dougal is suspended.

Seen him a few times on sky sports and also on screen in betfred and heā€™s very insightful. Thought he talked a lot of sense about teams styles of play being all very good but you need the right players to implement them.

Wait a minute - is this the same player dome we're saying is a busted flush, at best league 2 ...

Great game and great defender when played to his strengths - not a playmaker at the back and not as captain.

Good to see his return to form and confidence .

No Gabriel?

Marv was good yesterday against non league puddings but I will defer my judgement call on long term marvelousness till after the Bolton game.

We really have to hope that Husband doesn't get injured, we haven't got proper cover for him and he has consistently performed at a good level all season.

Absolutely. That part I noticed too. šŸ‘

I think Lyons could play anywhere across the middle and left or right side of the defence

I'm not convinced that Lyons is primarily a defender and he definitely isn't left footed. He looks capable at right back or right wing back but his biggest strengths appear to be a good engine and some attacking ability.
Tharme is an unknown to me so maybe he could do a decent job.

Those non league puddings created several good chances and weā€™re comfortably better than most league 1 sides weā€™ve played in the second half. They would have probs scored too against grimmy who is no better than Maxwell as Iā€™ve always said.

Much better performance but still had a couple of moments, one which could easily have resulted in a penalty. Hopefully the MOTM award further boosts his confidence. If we can get Marv back to his usual levels, we'll be a better team for it.

Fully concur with the majority on this thread and admit I expressed doubt about his performances earlier on in the season. I think credit should also go to Critch (although some will find that hard) because heā€™s identified the lack in performance and (contrary to what the supporters think) has dropped him from the squad which is now paying dividends as Marv is certainly getting back into it and showing signs of his former self.
Can someone please remind me which manager stripped him of the captaincy. Was it Critch?

I thought that Pool were gash in the 2nd half at Bromley, and Marvin saved our bacon on two or three occasions. Had Bromley scored, I feared that Pool might well ā€˜have been overun.

Still had a wobble, and is scared to show an interest in receiving a pass at times. Defending wise, which is his job and what he's good at = spot on

I think it was Appleton ā€¦ Said that he was better just focusing on his own game.

In the first half we were like Barcelona. They were like, er, Bromley. The gulf in class was obvious. Game was over at half time. Ok, eased up after the break and let the lower league side back into it a bit. No worries really as their star striker couldn't hit the cheeks of a cows arse with a banjo. The very epitome of a pudding in fact.
