Maxwell

I have to agree.

Just need CJ to have a good game next I and I am happily eating humble pie all week.

agree with Maxwell closely followed by the two centre halves but special mention for McCarthy who not only picked an attacking line up and we played very well for the first 15 mins but also recognising the need to change and was quite inspired to go 5-3-2 which not only gave Jerry the much needed help up front but curtailed to a certain extent their threat down the flanks which was causing us no end of problems in that first half with their long diagonal balls.

Bang on.👍

Nelson actually won the official MOM and he was our best outfield player but Maxwell was really good today and that top drawer save was ultimately a match winner.

MM has really praised him today & quite rightly so.
Mick says he only took the captain's armband off him because he doesn't believe keepers can affect what's going on in front of them.
MM: "I said to Maxi after the game, when you play like that, why the hell would you want the captains armband?".
Let's hope this win sets us up for another less stressful win at Rovers.

Didn't see anything today I didn't already know, he has always been a good shot stopper - the one at the south today was phenomenal.

It doesn't alter the fact that grimshaw is a better keeper and an asset we should be nurturing.

Absolutely superb. Distribution early on left a lot to be desired but some fantastic saves to keep us in the game.
Well done Maxi.

He was good today . Credit where credit’s due . He caught the ball better and made a couple of great saves however distribution still poor .

Played well for the first 15 ?what game were you watching ?it was hoof hoof hoof and was dreadfull I was thinking here we go again doesn't matter what side we pick when we play like that .In fact under mm we have played the worst football all season

nonsense. Are you a Stokie, it was them with the hoof ball from one full back to the opposite side. First fifteen minutes we got players like Poveda and Fiorini on the ball and we played more football in that first fifteen minutes than the total of the rest of the games this year. And even if you yourself thought it was hoof ball we got the three points. Perhaps that's not important to you.

I have criticized Maxwell all season but today he played well, came off his line, caught a few and punched a couple and made good saves. I'm eating some humble pie but he needs to back it up on Tuesday at rovers.

Credit where it's due, he made some good saves today, one was particularly good, but he has always been a decent shot stopper. It's the other areas of the game he isn't great at and it mostly comes from his height. He is too short to come for a lot of balls which means we are under a lot of pressure with balls coming into our box. A taller goalkeeper comes and punches or catches them which relieves this pressure.

Again, well done today, but I want a taller goalkeeper as our number 1 next season.

Quote from Stoke City fanzine “Why do keepers always have the game of their life against us.”

What were you watching? Rogers saw plenty of the ball and we looked sharp. Stoke were hoofing it and we matched them at times, but there was only one team trying to get it down.

Just for clarity we played 75 long balls out of a total of 228 passes. (32%)
Stoke played 87 out of 496 passes. (18%)
We scored 1 goal.
Stoke didnt scored any and that's all that counts.

That's because they dominated possession so it naturally follows that there's gonna be plenty of short passes too.In other words four short passes and then one long one makes it just 20% but it distorts what is happening. Facts can be twisted to suit and in that first half they were constantly playing that long diagonal pass to either wing.

If we do go down it wont be because of the keepers...we have two adequate keepers and theres not much between either of them. It really isnt a position to worry about

Possibly, IMO, Maxwells' best performance in a Pool shirt (OK, it; was a keeper shirt 😉 ), but he was immense.
Should have been MoM.

I'm not trying to prove or disprove anything I'm just telling the numbers.
Jagielka made 84/100 passes and Wilmot made 69/84. That is a fact.
They probably made 65 of those to each other from less than 20 yds. That's not a fact but I do remember noticing it in the first half and that's one of the reasons they dominate the overall possession stats.

I know your not, I'm just saying how stats can be deceptive.

There should be a stat for meaningful possession because this sideways backward shit counts for nothing
Agree, I know I've mentioned their long ball game but to some extent it wasn't really hoof ball in the way ours can be. I thought their diagonal long balls from one side of the pitch to the other was very effective and it caused us no end of problems particularly in that first half.

That diagonal ball is something we lack in the current squad and only Thorniley is half proficient at it. When we are in the market for next season that should be one of our priority. Marvin is a decent defender and his athleticism often gets him and other players out of trouble but his distribution is barely league 1 standard let alone the Championship. Husband is capable of the long diagonal but is very hit and miss. Connolly and Nelson may be able to give it a go particularly if we play a five with wing backs. Not sure about Goode.

He's a great shot stopper , no argument. However , much of the hoof ball comes from him because he's too slow to react when he has the ball
If you watch closely he looks for outfield players to release to quickly ,but a lot of the time they are not in good positions or are being marked so he has to curtail the quicker releases.

spot on. Think he gets way too much criticism over his distribution. He often looks for a quick release but I don't see a problem that if he doesn't see it then hold on to the ball til we are back in shape. Especially like yesterday, when we are actually winning.

When Holloway was manager I know some don't want to talk about him but when the keeper ( whoever it was) had the ball the central defenders split and moved quickly to the corners of the penalty area and the full backs moved out wider further upfield giving four options. That left a gap in the middle for a midfield player to come short and make himself available.
