Millwall v Blackpool Official Matchday Thread 28.08.21

The players were immense today and unlucky not to get something out of the game.

With the notable exception of CJ who looked like he couldn't be arsed when everyone else was working their bollocks off.

CJ is fast proving that he’s not got the minerals for this level unfortunately

The frustrating thing is we're not getting tonked.
Yeah and when eventually we play we are casuing problems for sides....but reality is still losing lots and not scoring many.

Yates has been wayward all season, doesn't look like he can hit the target currently.

Playing so well but getting undone in moments of lapses or poor finishing or indeed decisions.

It was obvious really looking at the players weve had out, the lack of some key area players, to go up a division and try and somewhat wing it like that.... always going to be tough but thats a very tough ask.

Not what we all expected a few weeks back with talk of exciting lists. All well and good talking up the exciting lists but can't be short in other areas.

We have got some exciting players like Lavery and Bolwer, but just aren't prepared for the Championship as it stands and thats a bit of a joke as we cant expect to slow start and come good time after time.

Big window coming up.

Can't fault the team, did well and would have come home with points if the ref wasn't diabolical.
The 10 played well and tried so hard, were unlucky today but still could have defended that last one better.

But a joke of decisions today.

Agree about the ref overall but unfortunately he had to give the red as Connolly was out of position and reacted
This poor defending cost us 3 points

why did Yates foul in such a dangerous position absolutely no need

Laverley and Bowler off for JJ and CJ
Ruined any chances of a second goal

some good performances esp Keshi
and the travelling fans (again)

But some new quality signings needed urgently

Anderson looked particularly good today and Bowler was his usual quality self. Great performances from the likes of Ekpiteta and Maxwell, James did well filling in at right back and that was Keogh's best performance in Tangerine (although I felt he began slipping back to the Keogh of old in the last 10 minutes). Lavery and Yates worked their socks off as always.

From what we've seen so far I do think unfortunately Hamilton won't be able to cut it at this level. He seems to look out his depth in all of his cameos, he still has time find his feet to be fair to him but we need to start seeing that improvement soon. Prime examples are the two chances he has absolutely skied against Coventry and today, against Coventry he probably should of scored and today he should of done better, can't fault him for not scoring really as it was a tight angle but it was nowhere near and we can't afford that at this level.

More positives than negatives to be taken from that game in my opinion. We seem to look better every week and I think we'll continue to see a steady improvement as the season goes on - hopefully topped off with a huge crescendo that sees us avoid relegation easily!

I'll say right now. Our players played well. We were up against a team that were well drilled in exploiting the spaces left by us being down to 10 men.

Yes, Anderson played the occasional wild pass when it was important that he didn't. But, he played well.

Bowler played some wild through balls - and he played well.

Nobody deserves less than 7/10, apart from the referee, who should be shot.

Just watched the goals back there.
Never ever a sending off.

Brilliant run and pass from Bowler for our goal, sheer determination from Lavery, good goal.

Their free kick was a pearler, power and accuracy into the top corner. I can't remember the foul that led up to it, avoidable??

Their winner very very disappointing. Winger not closed down, and they've got 4 in a group, all unmarked, around the penalty spot for a simple (well executed) finish.

gutted, we deserved at least a point
Foul was avoidable, Yates doing that thing where he turns into someone. The Millwall player wasn't doing too much. These little details can make the difference as I thought we generally did well and definitely deserved at least a point.

Massively growing problem is that linesman’s one week are running the line in premier league with the mandate to keep their flags down & VAR will sort it. Next week they run the line in the Championship & incompetence go hand in hand as they don’t or won’t flag.

Absolutely not….! I’m as pissed off as anyone, and my ‘tonked’ statement was made out of anger and frustration. Yep, I got it wrong and I should be more positive! Right I’m off for a beer and reflection 🙂
You didn't get it wrong and you don't need to feel like you need to apologise Kirky. We're all feeling p1ssed off tonight mate.
Go and have your beer and try not to reflect too deeply, you'll end up with a permanent frown 😄

Unfair on CJ. They could all be arsed. That said, not sure if CJ is the man in this division. Jury's out.

Majorly brassed off, but not panicking. If an established Championship club, playing at home with a man’s advantage, for in excess of 80 mins (added time included) and they struggle to beat ‘little old’ promoted Blackpool, then I think we’ll be ok. After clawing back a two goal deficit against one of the Championship’s main contenders last week, to holding out for so long today - it’s given me reason to be optimistic. Very slow start last season and likewise this, but I can only see us improving.

Good, considered post TA. But, like all of us, you're waiting for that win. Frustrating isn't it?

Good analysis. It was a sending off, simply because the laws of the game don't allow for anything less. If Connolly was the last man, it's a foul. If it's a foul, it's a red card. For me it wasn't a foul. But, for the ref it's an easy decision.

This is a major test for us, winning breeds confidence and we don’t seem to be able to get one. I believe NC will keep them focused..

Travelling back on the coach regards the ref I have no words I've seen some shocking ones but he is definitely in the all time to 10!

Their free kick seemed to be taken closer than the actual foul? (Was there a foul?)

We couldn't seem to buy a free kick for what looked like clear fouls.

Thought we fell asleep on the 2nd and didn't think the subs helped in any way.

It's going to be a long journey home

Never mind Lee. That’s football for you. Makes the good away trips all the better.

Thanks, lots of things in a 2 week period, very poorly pooch, partners dad diagnosed with stomach and lung cancer, had to sack an employee for gross misconduct and other stuff. It happens but it has been relentless!!
Sounds like life is a bit of a bummer for you at the moment and no win today to cheer you up.
Here's hoping things soon improve on all fronts.

I agree Herts, this month couldn’t have been much worse. Puts our moans about recruitment etc into context, I hope your luck changes for the better and soon.🤞🤞

We are competing in all the games despite all the pre season handicaps and ongoing injuries bar Cardiff City

If we were nailed on bottom rung we would have been torn a new one today. The fact is away from home with 10 men we led and then held parity until the last kick of the game.

The international break is a good opportunity to address those small details that make the difference plus any new acquisitions can bed in with one already through the door.

At some point it will turn.Keep the faith and applaud a brilliant effort today.Keep that up and we will be fine

A harsh red, yellow more like. Didn't look clearly a last man foul, and quite far out. ME looked great, Jerry some good touches, Lavery a shoe in for the first 11. Starting to try to pass more and keep possession. Let's hope we get a good right back, plus a ball playing, calm in possession midfileder - we'll be fine then.

We've signed Ryan Wintle.

When you compare that sending off, due to a man who made a meal of going down and well away from the goal to the penalty incident at Bournemouth, where there was clear contact within the penalty area, one resulting in a red card, early in the game whilst the other resulted in a penalty but no red or even yellow card for the offender, it makes you wonder how referees make their decisions.

One wonders if Lavery would have got anything from the pratt had he not got up, after being brought down in the box and put the ball in the net. Great goal by a great signing.

A magnificent effort from the ten men, who obviously tired towards the end of the game, and a match that was ruined by that pillock of a referee.
