New Signing Confirmed (Dominic Thompson)

Had a quick look through his stats on FotMob for his loan spell at Ipswich.
He typically scored 7+.
Ipswich generally play a back 3 but Dominic played in front of them at LWB.
Against Morecambe he was highlighted for creating 6 chances.
At the other end of the spectrum he lost the most one-on-one duels (5) against The Cods.
Soccerbase says Brentford paid £1m for him. No idea if that is accurate.
A back 4 of Gabriel, Eky, Williams and Thompson is looking quite tall.
Plenty of time to develop so hopefully we will help him do that.
Welcome to Blackpool. 👍

Sounds alright to me, though I'd have had the bunting out for David Ferguson and Scott Darton the way it's going. Need to settle both full back positions down with a pair of solid dependable lads who you can just put in the team and forget about for the season, and they just get on with it.

Just happy to see someone sign tbh at this point, and I guess Appleton will be too. Welcome aboard, please don't get injured after two minutes on your debut.

Excellent cover for Hubby while he's injured. Husband was one of our most consistent performers in the Championship last season. They can then compete for the left back spot. Garbs under pressure now.

Largely positive comments from Ipswich fans, from when he was a couple of months into his loan last season.

The piece on the fishul site reckons he aims to contribute to attacking play, but the Tractor Boys observe that he wasn’t ideal for their wing back system, being predominantly a defensive full back – maybe we’ll see more of an attacking aspect if he’s in a different system (and a bit more experienced, a bit older – he’s still only 21).

“No coincidence the defence has been so good since he’s been part of it. He pretty much marshals that whole left side himself. Granted he certainly still has a lot to learn but feel he could be a great player for Town if a buy option becomes available. Strong character.”

“I think he has the defensive attributes, certainly does look a good 1 on 1 defender and appears to be improving each game.
Not sure about him in an attacking capacity yet, but that might come, he's definitely athletic enough to get up and down it just looks like a bit of an unnatural concept to him still at times.”

“Not sure if I'd want Thompson to re-sign but I think the criticism of him being unable to push forward is a bit unfair because it's not his role in the system.”

“Adds good balance for me on that left side - less marauding and effective than Burns but does add a bit more defensive structure.”

“He's still got moments where I feel he's not switched on and concentrating, but perhaps it's more of how he appears rather than what is actually happening....”

Without wanting to be negative not all comments are positive. Infact there aren't many here. Hope the lad proves them all wrong though 🤞Link and comments

Good for him. Decent player but totally wrong for our needs.

average for me offers little going forward.

I found him to be slightly underwhelming

Presumably we didn’t want him then. Good - not attacking enough.

A poor signing all in. It made our threat completely redundant and predictable down the left. Easily the worst left back in the final third we had last season, bar Burgess.

Time will tell whether he proves the LB we needed, we have been poor on that side pre season with Garbutt ineffectual in defence. Hopefully MA can bring out the best of the lad.

Let's hope Thompson is good enough to be first choice. Husband is good enough as left back or as cover there, and also cover as centre back. Garbutt isn't available enough, so for me he can go.

I love it when you have a busy day then tune in to Avftt to see that the club has calmly gone about its business... could be that we’ve signed up a young lad with potential in a position we were desperate to fill, with height and hopefully abit of pace and quality.

Welcome to the seaside Dominic. And you’re right about us fans. 👍 🍊

😂😂cmon Phil at least try and be optimistic
As Phil may say.
"Weak shoulders that lad. He can't even hold a shirt straight
Pleased about this, and more than a little relieved.
A 6 ft LB who will feel he's got an opportunity to prove himself after not getting a chance with Brentford since the 2019/20 season. Another ex Swindon loan player I see.

At 6ft we've a chance of defending against Cardiff near post nod ons in the LB position, rather than leaving Garbutt to it like Critch did last year.

Cover and options at LB beyond Husband and Garbutt, really happy with this

Now for Lyons at RB.

Much happier about the season start than I was an hour ago. Hope we can get a RB before Saturday?
Dave,
Lyons is toast not tea for us

This sounds like the way our fans rated Turton, before he went and smashed it for Udders.

Loads more. We miss Jimmys presence in the side imo. Big character and works his knackers off.
We miss Jimmy loads. He might not be the world's greatest player but he's brilliant at setting a tempo. He always, always, always shows for the ball, gets us moving up his flank. Left sided players always do better in front of Jimmy. He's also decent in the air, doesn't take any prisoners and talks really well through a game. If only he could cross...

Honestly, I know I bang on about Gaz for the lols* but I think Jimmy is deeply undervalued and here's an interesting stat just cos everyone loves a Jimmy related fact.

Jimmy goes off with score 0-0 Vs Derby - we then ship 7 in 150 mins without him. We also ship 4 twice in preseason with Garbs at left back.

*And cos he's ** ace too tbf.

Completely turned his career around since he grew that topknot. I thought it would make him even more of a wildcard but he's been sound.

If only they could sort out his dodgy hamstrings.

My Brentford mate reckons he's decent...
"Quick and very left footed.Didnt think he was 6ft but good stature for a full back. Got him from Arsenal for around £1million,but never got a chance ahead of Rico.Still only 21just indeed).Done ok on his loans. Was MOM against City when Rico out."

We are in total harmony on Jimmy. Yay! He's a key character in our side. Last season he Marv and UD played big roles in our success. So mentally robust.

The comments on the Brentford forum aren’t exactly complementary towards him either.hopefully he improves in tangerine.

You could hear it when he did commentary on the Leeds game. He talked well but seemed really pissed off with the shit goals conceded but that didn't last too long. He seems to me like someone who sets the tone, keeps things light and people laughing but also takes football deadly seriously.

Yes. I agree. Gutted he's injured.

Luke Garbutt when fit is hardworking a reasonable defender & in our promotion season his delivery was pretty good. Hubby is a better defender & shows guile & cunning along with a never say die attitude, perhaps we've moved on somewhat now & LG hasn't played much at all since his rather unlucky second injury last season. As for the new guy I haven't a clue if he can be a success for us, as before today I'd never heard of him. I'll give my opinion after I've seen him play a few games. PS glad we've managed to sign a few players, I don't think we'll be too far off with a proper defence available & the new players bedding in, I know we lost against Everton but we started creating more chances & that can't be a bad thing.

Pity he will be playing in front of half filled ground due to many of our fans spontaneously combusting over lack of new players.
Very good, but note there’s nothing spontaneous about it … plenty of bored attention-seekers who’ve been waiting impatiently for the excuse to go into full-scale ‘look at me’ meltdown for years …

Ipswich fans are a weird bunch. He's a defender. They kept 9 clean sheets in his first 12 games, conceded only 9 goals in the 17 games he played for them and they moan he didn't attack enough!

Certainly getting mixed reviews, however he's playing CB and not wingback, seems he's decent at defending.

Still young and the recruitment team and Appleton see the promise in him, so all we can do is give him that support.

We always seem to get more out of players anyway, I put it down to the great atmosphere and at positive support at the games.

However it's not great to hear some of the comments we have seen including Ipswich some on here.

Wonder how much we got for him
"Probably not a lot.

Blackpool are investing in their infrastructure at the moment and have said their playing budget is restricted, probably one of - if not the lowest - in the 2nd tier.

Could be wrong but suspect it’ll be a deal with some nice add-ons if he comes good but very little in the way of up front cash"

Its also interesting that clubs seem to have heard of us having no money as we're investing in infrastructure. Which isn't exactly true, even though limited activity doesn't help this right now.

So is it a shrewd move by Sadler to paint the scene as not spending much to try and get the best deals or does it not inspire a fanbase into buying tickets as much and being as excited if you say it.

Doubt we have the lowest budget.

Yep some comments aren't good.

However in league 1 for a club looking to get out of it you want attacking qualities which doesn't seem to be his game and played at wingback.

In the championship we want him to be defending well for us at fullback.

I don't know, maybe the position is a key difference.

Yes it sounds like he's a decent defender and that's what we need most, someone to snuff out the threat down our left.
