Hello,

My Washington machine which was a hotpoint started to set on fire last week. It is not on the recall list, but I need a new machine.

wife is a nhs worker for the discounts.

has anyone made a purchase? After links and recommendations. Anything but a hotpoint as 609k machines are being recalled.

Sounds like Hotpoint living up to its name.

Btw, people should not leave house / go to work etc with washing machine or dryer still on. One of the biggest causes of house fires. Or move them to an outside (separate garage) if you can. You only need the thermostat etc to go and you’re in trouble.

Bosch. First got 9kg one when we had our B&B, towels and pillow cases every day. Left it when we sold up, bought a new one, 7 years and good as new. If you can get a 8 or 9 kg and use less frequently, really efficient. Bosch also for tumble drier, but not for cord free hoover, the batteries were rubbish.

Give up with branding years ago I just buy the one with the longest guarantee which is far cheaper than paying the added insurance they offer.
Washing machine 5yr
Tumble dryer 5yr
Boiler 10yr
Fridge freezer 3yr
It works the companies are backing their product not to break down.

I write off electricals at £100 a year - so if it's £300 I'd be happy for it to last 3 years. If it's £5000, I'd expect 5. I think the quality of things like washing machines is much better than it used to be - regardless of where they are made and what brand they are. The manufacturing processes are far more automated and consistent.

Miele are the best in the world imho, buy shite buy twice is the rule ive gone with for years. PAY THE EXTRA and it will pay you back in time and grief ... good luck pal

I used to work in Currys a few years back. Obviously depends on how much you're looking to spend but would typically recommend Samsung as they're reasonably priced and offer a five year guarantee as standard. However, if you're looking for an investment go for a Miele, they cost the best part of £1000 but they will typically last for 15+ years.

Thanks for the tips so far.

My wife works for the nhs so do any companies offer further discount?

It’s the washer-dryers that are dangerous. They collect lint (very fine cotton fibres from clothes) in the space where the drying heater is. Absolutely awful design, bordering on the criminal. The wife’s gran’s house was burnt down by one.

I had a Hotpoint once, but it used to chew shirts up as they got trapped in the door seal on a spin cycle. It cost me more in ruined shirts than in buying it in the first place.

As others have said, if you have a family who are doing washing daily then most washers only last 4 years. And most of these have so many programmes you never use. In the past we have had all the main makes (Hotpoint, Creda, Bosch, etc.) We then met a local, experienced washing machine engineer who advised us to buy one of the less well known makes as they are much better value and last at least as long. The last 2 machines we have had were ones we had never heard but were recommended by him. They have both worked as least as well as the brand names and actually lasted longer. Our current one is a make called Amica

hoof to this thread my attempts to get a new machine from the manufacturer are dead in the water.

many top offers this week?

Bosch
Scrapped our 3 year old Hotpoint as uneconomic repair. When scrapped the engineer offered us a second hand reconditioned Bosch for 45 gbp.
5 years later it is still going strong

Just get it insured after guarantee runs out £100 quid a year with domestic &general the house I have in Blackpool has had the same washing machine for the last ten years (and any problems ,they usually send engineer within two/three days of contact ).
