Nice article from ODB

"I tried as hard as possible to find someone other than Neil" Simon Sadler said. Wonder how that makes Stephen Dobbie feel !

It's a bit formulaic, clearly having to respond to a set brief. Don't like to see any of us calling out our own current players in a popular magazine. I agree Dom is wildly frustrating at times but how will he feel to read that? He needs direction. That is allegedly Critchley's strong suit, lets see 😗

The breadth of opinion on CJ is interesting. And quite unusual.
I'm a big critic of CJ, think technically he's awful and was nowhere near the standard required for the Championship. Sure, he had the occasional purple patch of 20 minutes or so in a few games but overall he had no consistency to be good enough for that level. Let's see if Critch gives him a chance to prove he can be consistent and if so, I'll happily revise my opinion of him.

It really is! I'm a fan, personally, particularly in L1. He's looked sharp pre-season as well. Interesting that every manager we've had would appear to rate him highly as well.
do they? He's spent a lot of the time on the bench and perhaps only started because of injuries[long term] to others eg Keshi

Agreed, most frustrating player we’ve had in ages. Technically poor and little to no football brain.
But…..
Pace to burn and will terrify defences in this League. If we can get the ball in front of him with space to run into and a very simple instruction of “put the ball in the danger area, close to one of our strikers” he could be a huge asset this season 🤞

My memory's not the best over the last 3 years but sure he's made more starts than not when he has been fully fit. I never really saw him and Keshi in the same position or having the same role to draw a direct comparison tbh. Anyway, let's hope he has a great season as he was very good under Critch when we were last in L1 until he got injured.

In 3 years CJ has made 54 starts and 31 sub appearances in the League. Had a long injury absence of course.

League 1 is CJ's optimum level.

I'm expecting big things from him this season.

If CJ is played correctly in the right games ODB is spot on. However I can see him as LWB or RW more often than not under NC.

Thompson I think ODB is being harsh on, but he does suggest the solution, which is simple, ** the XXXX for every time he makes a pass inside from the touchline. It must be the easiest thing to teach him only to look to playing it down the line and for CJ or The Wasp to know where it's going and show for it.

Apart from that the article catches the mood. SS has to learn quickly, Bishop was a disaster and Lyons will score 10, or more.

Popping out of lurker mode to make a couple of comments.

Firstly, I agree that the “player I’d drive to another club” question is mean-spirited. You’re expected to provide an answer to it and I dithered over refusing to answer. With hindsight, I wish I had done and if they ask me to do the Blackpool bit next year then I will do. When I got the hard copy of the magazine and saw it in black and white I would agree it feels harsh.

I actually think Thompson has been given a bit rough treatment in some quarters and think he could do alright this season with the right coaching. If he has read it, then apologies to him. Picking anyone out was tough as we don’t have any arseholes and nobody who is truly awful (and even then it would still be mean-spirited).

As for underrated, it’s clear that CJ is not everyone’s favourite player. I’d argue that’s exactly what makes him underrated. He cops a lot of flak and I get why at times, but he also has games where he can be a real handful. He could make bottom half teams in this league look very silly potentially.

Worth noting with these sorts of things that it’s done to a word count and they can heavily edit your answers. For instance my full answer on the CJ bit was:
Our most underrated player is…CJ Hamilton. It’s easy to understand why he gets a lot of flak because sometimes he can be extremely frustrating. Nearly all wingers are inconsistent though, and on his day I think he could cause a lot of problems for other teams having dropped down a division.
In that context I don’t think picking CJ out for that question was a million miles off. And again, you’ve got to pick someone. Who else is underrated in the squad?

End of the day, it’s a bit of a fluff piece and heavily edited to fit a particular format. I’m not expecting a Pulitzer on the back of it, that’s for sure.

I'd drive Thompson just so he can go to a club where fans appreciate him.

I don't mind negativity but slagging Thompson off before a ball is kicked is ridiculous. Husband makes two mistakes against in a friendly and it barely gets mentioned. Borders on bizarre.

Agree on CJ, he could be a big player for us this season if we play with wingers and not that silly 3-5-2.

Formation will change depending on who we are playing and the game situation but I think it will be 3 5 2 to start off with, hopefully not conceding many .

Mean spirited, exactly. And he could cause some teams problems this season. Quit the lurking.

You are missed on here ODB, agree with CJ and as I have pointed out on here a few times, he started late in football and is still a relative novice who can get better. Definitely our most underrated and over slated player. UTMP 🍊
