o/t First car you always wanted/First car you got

Allegro 1.1 DL in harvest gold with one rattle canned wing, diffwhinetastic. Not as bad as everyone who's never driven one pretends they are, excellent ride on the hydro.

Always wanted a 1966 911s, has to be a 60s one with the Fuchs, not the cocaine yuppy mobiles that came after.

First car was an old rusty triumph mayflower, wooden floorboards, tubular steel chassis, bought for £90 with two mates to go camping in Cornwall and sold it for £90. Perfect car would have been and still is an Aston Martin

Got a 2nd hand Morris 1100 in the 60s.

The starter motor kept jamming, and I always had to park it on an incline and roll the car to unjam it.

Bought a new Ford Capri in 1970 (they advertised it as the car you always promised yourself !!!). There was a design fault and I went through half a dozen clutch cables in the first 2 years. The car looked good, I paid extra for the vinyl roof, but I couldn't get rid of it quickly enough.

Btw, that was the only new car I ever bought. Most cars today are light years ahead in terms of comfort and reliability.

I had bikes rather than cars when I was younger.

Bike I wanted: Kawasaki Ninja ZX-12R (2001)
Bike I ended up with: Kawasaki GPZ 500 (1986)

1936 Ford 8, no heater, semaphore indicators, vacuume operated windscreen wipers and oftern had to use the starting handle to get it going.
Took my driving test in that car, bought my dream car a few years later an E-type for £1375 in 1970, wish I still had it.

And the MK2 Escort would be worth WAY more than the Manta now.

I had a Mk2 Ghia, my favourite car.
Ye, I was told when I bought it that they didn’t make that many and it would hold its price in the future, canary yellow , loved it.
And there’s time yet….

Wanted a fiat x19. Got a mini from 606 car auction. Great car first trip to see the mighty at Aldershot

Wanted Mini Cooper or 1275GT or Mini converted with a huge engine 😂
Got Mini 850 & it spent more time in bits in my dads garage, than actually on the road JFV755F 1967/68 & you can guess what I decided the F meant. I did learn load’s about what to look for when buying a banger though & served my apprenticeship with that heap. 😬

My dream car has always been an Austin Martin, my favourite the DB7.
Alas only a big win on the pre bonds, lottery or Billy Hills will allow this to happen.

My first car was an Escort Mk1 canary yellow.
And yes, as others have said about their first car I wish I still had it👍🏻

Wanted an MG Magnet got a Commer Cob. Big end went and last heard of abandoned in Northampton by my Dad who had borrowed it.

With ref to Olygon. I had a new Ford Cortina (company car). Drove it from Bootle to Blackpool and it was stuck in gear. New gear box required. That was the start of two years of breakdowns. Never touched a ford since.

first car was a mini 1.1 clubman in metallic bronze. Even from a young age always wanted a TVR particularly a Tasmin.

Started lusting after jaguars when i was at college, i worked for a guy who occasionally let me drive his XJ.

When i was in my mid to late twenties I drove a series of very boring company cars, so i bought a 1976 BMW bauer convertible, which i absolutely loved, one day driving up to blackpool from london with the roof down I overtook a guy in his fifties in a jag xk convertible, realised i didnt love the BMW quite so much.

Was in Harrogate 1981 with friends and saw, parked up, a 1930 racing Bentley, in BRG with leather straps over the bonnet. It looked bril.

First car...an X reg Talbot Samba hatchback. Not bad on the motorway but hated going uphill.

Best mate had a 1600 Ghia ( square headlamps) lovely car... rang me at 2 am one morning to tow him out of a hedge in Longridge... don’t know who was most angry... him for bending his pride and joy... or me cause he got me out of bed😡🤣

Ah, real wooden dash and door trims!

a bottle green (and filler) Hillman avenger where the gear stick came off in your hand as you were driving? and my dad's mk 2 escort van which could hold 8 p!ssed seasiders for away matches no bother!

always wanted an RS 2000 - they go for a fortune now

who can remember the blue Invacars that you'd see parked up behind the goals at different grounds - I think they were known by a different name back then! 🤓

Wanted a late 80's Ford Capri 2.8 laser in Racing Green. Think they stopped making them on an 87 E reg.

Got a 1984 XR3i that had been absolutely thrashed. Had all sorts of problems with it.

Minu clubman with wooden frames along each wing and the back double doors. Wanted a Capri.

Got a 1.6L Racing Green Capri afterwards Y regd 82 iirc. Much more versatile car than I expected. Carried all sorts of furniture etc. Great car (think they stopped making them at the old D reg?)

Edit can't recall seeing an E reg Lewis W.

In 1975 bought my first car a D reg vauxhall viva HA for £15 got £8 scrap for it after 11 months cheapest motoring ive ever had. Always wanted a Ford Capri got one in 1983 a 2.0 S was a great car for me

... with you on that ... swapped the escort pop for a MK2 1600 sport... than a MK3 XR3i... MK4 RS Turbo..finished with RS Sapphire Cosworth... swapped that for 3 kids 😳and a Landrover Freelander 😭🤣
Talking about swops, when I got married in 1970 I had a mk10 Jag. With encouragement from my new wife, I swapped it for a Ford Thames van and a Bendix automatic washing machine. I still have the wife but wish I still had the Jag.😉

Am I right in remembering that for the 1970 World Cup Ford brought out an Escort Mexico and that it was a very limited edition?
Started with the Mk1s and as mentioned above from the London to Mexico 1970 rally (Jimmy Greaves finished sixth fact fans) the Mk2 was fairly standard with a 1.6 Pinto with some aluminium bits.

Saved my ass off and wanted a Mk3 escort, ideally red …… this would have been ideal, however my Dad told me he’d find me a perfect car…..

As reliable as it was , he came home with a mark1 escort in dysentery beige. Hardly the fanny magnet I was hoping for……

I crashed my mum’s Ford Fiesta into that big wall coming out of Longridge when I was 18. she wasn’t very pleased either cos I wrote it off 🙄

wanted (desperately) an Escort RS Turbo - would have settled for XR3i or XR3 cabriolet
1651241203769.png
got a 1988 Rover Montego - absolute pile of crap (but mate was struggling financially as his wife left him with massive debts - so i got it cheap and it was only about 3 year old)

You should perhaps spare a thought for the youth of today.. my son’s first car two years ago was a 6 year old 1.1 Ford Fiesta and he had to pay £4,000 to insure it!! He’s just replaced it though with a BMW and it’s dropped to £1,500… 😀
