OLD PICTURES OF BLACKPOOL FC

Interesting...a large advert for the tower on the south stand.
Am I missing something? That looks an optical illusion with the pitch running the other way. The advertsing is on the West Stand. .The Kop is at the top of the screen. You can see Borough Park further up. The railway line ran along the West into Central Station.

Apols if I'm misreading yours but the South Stand advertising is on its front facade - not the roof.

Ah right, can't see it clearly on my laptop. Had to really focus to see it. Apols clappers. Still looks like the pitch size wise is running the other way though.
I need to apologise for posting what you think 20s 😉

I thought it didn’t look right myself which is why I looked quite closely at the pic. Don’t remember the tower advertising at all. I think the visual effect is foreshortening of the image by the camera.

I have a signed print of the David Wright picture, 'Bloomfield Road The Glory Years" and the South Stand Tower advert is featured on it.

That big photo back up a few posts is incredible. Can't believe how close the West was to the railway. What was it like when 25-30k were coming out?

It was all sidings near the ground and coal storage. The main line was more towards the Lytham Road side. Everyone spilled out onto Central Drive which is why the kop is massive and the other stands are fairly modest. South and most of the west spilled out onto Bloomfield Bridge area which was packed.

Fantastic picture, my parents had just moved to Blackpool when that was taken, we lived on Lytham rd at the top of Lonsdale rd. Some fond memories of that area, later on, climbing over the railway line was my shortcut to the Kop end. Thanks for adding the picture.

If you look closely, the shed for engine maintenance and servicing was just to the side of the Kop with a 70 feet turntable capable of handling the biggest Express engines. Between Bloomfield Rd and South station were carriage sidings, but at the height of the summer, carriages from specials would be stored at every station all the way through to Kirkham.

Excellent post. I've never seen that one before and didn't know about the turntable.

Does in anyone have any further info on this match which I believe was to celebrate the opening of the Camp Nou? Wikipedia somewhat confusingly states that the game was held at Bloomfield Rd.?
"Also at the end of the season, on 24 May, Blackpool hosted FC Barcelona in a friendly.

Barcelona was the opposition for a pre-season friendly in May 1957. Blackpool fought out a 3–3 draw with the Spanish club.[3]"

When you go to the Barcelona trophy room there's a Blackpool pennant in one of the cabinets.

06FA8BAF-9B5C-4D3E-A52B-E5CF385F1574.jpegManaged to dig this out re-the 1957 game at the Camp Nou, it’s a bit blurred but it’s a letter sent to the ‘President‘ of Blackpool Football Club confirming the price of the forthcoming match on 22nd of May. Basically it says the total price of a match ticket, picking up at the airport in a car, which will take you to the Hotel Majestic then to the match, then back to the hotel at 10.00, then back to the airport on the day after. At a cost of 136.25pesetas roughly £40 in todays dosh. It also says please send us photos and details of players for our propaganda (Publicity purposes). Out of dictatorial necessity the letter is typed in Castilian and not Catalan, which was banned under the fascist Dictator General Franco. Mes que un Club!
