So many rumours as to why....suffice to say we lost a magnificent resource and amenity for the town not to mention an architectural gem.

Swimming baths are very expensive to run. The town couldn't afford it. Short-sighted though. It needed a commercial enterprise to take it on.

Our annual swimming gala (Highfield School) was held at the Derby Baths, think it was 1967 when a lad in our class dived off one of the boards and smacked his head on the pool bottom, Mr.Bates ( guess his nickname?) dived in fully clothed and saved him, heroic stuff!

Never seen that picture before.👍
It is it's from the history of Newcastle United and is a young Alan Suddick in 1966 outside St James's
Edit to add the actual date of the photo is 1st October 1965
It is definitely not a young Alan Suddick who was only 21 in Oct 1965, it is an older player, Ron McGarry I think who was 27 in Oct 1965. Check out a Newcastle United squad photo from the 1965/66 season.

The hairstyle threw me but that was taken from Newcastle 's own pages. It also crops up on line under Newcastle fans. See for yourself it actually gives the date as being 1st October 1965. Alan Suddick signing autographs for young Newcastle fans. I can't believe they would get it wrong. I d like to see confirmation from any Newcastle fans around that time before dismissing it.
if you Google young Alan Suddick that pic even comes up. Try following it through and see where it takes.

I am surprised we are still discussing this, that photo you put up is 100% not Alan Suddick, google “ images Alan Suddick Newcastle United “ and check it out for yourself. Suddick always had a flat hairstyle and his face looks nothing like this player. Suddick was a hero of mine frm Dec 1966 when I went to all the Blackpool home and away games well into the 1970s and I spent hours at the Squires Gate training ground, Suddick’s memory is indelibly printed on my brain. Don’t wait for Newcastle fans, you can also check out images of Suddick when he joined Pool in 1966, it was only just over a year after this Newcastle photo was taken.
