OLD PICTURES OF BLACKPOOL FC

When you think about it there aren't really that many pictures of Blackpool and Bloomfield Road pre 80s. The Gazette must have tens of thousands in their Library? Sadly as supporters we have no access to it and they very rarely use anything we haven't seen before.
Maybe they could publish a picture book of Blackpool playing at home with 100 unseen pictures OR The Gazette could scan the negatives and put the whole catalogue online where supporters could then buy and download a high res image. Just a though.

Is there anything in Central library? I always meant to go in and browse the local archives but put it off and am now exiled.
I'll perhaps give it a try when I'm back as it all absolutely fascinates me.

I was reading (again) only last night about the black pool that gave the town it's name, how the stream from Marton Mere still exists but is now fully culverted somewhere under the roads and appears at Manchester Square pumping station. I'm such a saddo.

I remember going into the Central Library reference section which used to be upstairs donkeys years ago and poring over reams of microfiche of old Gazettes. There's every possibility they still have the material in some form.

The owners of the EG JPI Media must be sitting on thousands and thousands of negatives. They need digitalising (scanning) and sharing with supporters. I'm presuming either a local photographer working for the either the local paper or the club took pictures at every home game spanning over 133 years.

as
Oyston got rid of the gazette photographer I think when we made the PL. Think he might be back now as I spoke to him when on cleaning duty and I would imagine he's got a pretty extensive back catalogue.

So was I and still have the programme. Pool won easily.

What was it a friendly?

I'm more interested in the older pictures. 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s. The night we beat Arsenal in the cup 3-2, My first game losing to Chelsea 3-4. Where are the pictures??? Mathews, Morty??? Jimmy Hampson?? Who were the local photographer's??

Well he might still have access to them. He's a better option than the photographers of way back when.
Simply trying to be helpful. I would imagine he's a good choice for first port of call if you wanted to follow it up.

It was a fiendly for the opening of the floodlights.

Are you saying the EG or whatever the local paper was then used free lance photographers.
Whats his name?

Tony Quested would know who has the catalogue for Blackpool FC. Is he still alive?

Jumped off the top board but never dived. Used to go in the summer holidays regularly. Highlight was eyeing up the talent on the sunbathing terrace on the roof.

I could not believe the Derby baths had been demolished. I used to go there often when living in Blackpool. Also saw a number of competitions at the poo the only drawback was there was no diving pool. On one of my visits "back home" I was disappointed the swimming pool was no longer there.

I swam in the Derby Baths once in the early 70s in the local inter-schools swimming gala, second leg in a 4 x 50 yard freestyle relay. I had never swum there before that, and as I hit the water I was shocked to realise it was seawater! Put me right off my stroke for a few seconds, that did. I was used to freshwater pools and no-one had told me.

As a South Shore lad I swam mostly at the Lido, but I went to Derby Baths a few times
I didn't have the bottle to dive off the top board, but the 2nd board was high enough.
The lifeguard used to blow his/her whistle loudly to ensure swimmers got out of the way when someone was diving off the 2 high boards.

So if you were having 2nd thoughts, it was quite an incentive to dive off because the whole pool was watching you.
Thought I would bottle it if I stood on the edge, so me and my mate dived off without looking down - wimps.

I swam rather badly & I if I had plucked up courage to actually dive in it would have resulted in the biggest belly flop ever seen ouch!

At least you went for it Dave. I climbed up just to have a look. Whistle went, everyone moved & life stood still (all I could hear was my mates pissing themselves). Long & humiliating climb down 😞

Did you ever try Cocker St you got free cockroaches in there.😆

I used to go to swimming club at Cocker St baths in the early 60s. You used to get certificates for swimming various distances. You started with 1 length and doubled it each week. I was dead chuffed to get my mile certificate by swimming 64 lengths and I was only about 8 years old.

PNE Away August 1980. Anglo Scottish Cup, anyone go ? I was sat on a ledge on the back row age 10. Another one Pool Away
Great seeing those pics from the early Alan Ball team of 1980. There was a real buzz about the attacking style of football with Dave Hockaday, Dave Bamber and Colin Morris. Also remember Bobby Doyle, Gary Williams at left back and of course Ball himself as player manager. Unfortunately, Ball was restricted to brief cameo appearances as his legs had gone. Such a shame it couldn't be maintained.

Your right there was a real buzz. Beat everyone pre-season and won the first couple in the League and the League Cup. It all went downhill after Everton in the 2nd Round. Sadly playing has beens like Ted McDougal Willie Morgan Jackie Ashurst etc just didn't work with the promising kids like Deary Greenhall and a 14yo Eamonn Collins! I noticed a clip on YouTube the other day from Kick Off in February 81 where Ball gave 100% assurance we were to good to go down. He lasted a few more weeks and we were relegated by Easter. Set us back years.

Was Everton in the second round the one where their fans were brought in at Blackpool South with the police then marching them to the ground down Waterloo Rd and round onto Central Drive?
I only ask because, pre-match me and friends were playing pool in the Waterloo and the police made the manager lock the doors. Their lot passed by banging on the windows and kicking at the doors.

Jackie Ashurst was pretty decent I recall.
Had a couple of good seasons at Dirty playing alongside Brendan Ormsby. Not many players have a conscience and play consistently to the best of their ability but he was one of them.

66. Yeah your right. I saw the Everton fans escort. I was only young and with my old man and I do remember hanging back across the road from the Waterloo to let them go down Central Dr. I also remember another big escort in that area a few years before against Forest. They brought loads and were marched down Saville Road to Blackpool South. Different times. Was it a regular thing to use Blackpool South in the 70s ? Train specials maybe ??

Until the early 70s the London trains still went from South direct.
