As a South Shore lad I swam mostly at the Lido, but I went to Derby Baths a few times
I didn't have the bottle to dive off the top board, but the 2nd board was high enough.
The lifeguard used to blow his/her whistle loudly to ensure swimmers got out of the way when someone was diving off the 2 high boards.
So if you were having 2nd thoughts, it was quite an incentive to dive off because the whole pool was watching you.
Thought I would bottle it if I stood on the edge, so me and my mate dived off without looking down - wimps.
