The letter from the Black Lives Matter group to the POTUS elect and his Vice President is all well and good although it does appear to have a somewhat threatening undertone.
Regardless of that one thing is for certain, regardless of how Biden tackles this issue.
As soon as the next black, gun toting, knife wielding, assaulter of pregnant women and all round nasty piece of work gets shot and killed by the police (whether that be a black or white officer) then once again the streets of the US will turn into rioting and looting, etc, etc, etc.
Joe Biden needs all the help he can get to resolve this pandemic amongst certain parts of the American population.
This has been festering for many, many years and sadly it is not going to go away any time soon.

On a lighter note, I was quite amazed that when “gammon” was being discussed on this thread the gastronomic expert (aka Allez) didn’t make an appearance to discuss eggs or pineapple as the best accompaniment.

Could I just say I’m an English, white, baby boomer and I don’t feel victimised or offended in the slightest. I suspect it’s a tiny minority who just enjoy being outraged all the time.

I’m also quite chilled about this kneeling malarkey. It only takes a few seconds and doesn’t interfere with my enjoyment of the game in the slightest. I certainly shan’t be joining in booing the team.

Anyway. Back to more important things. I have a lawnmower to clean.
 
I seem to remember that on some US TV shows of the 1970s that some of the black characters used to refer to 'White Honkys'. I never really understood the term, but assumed it was some kind of ethnic insult. I can't remember a reaction of indignation and horror against it though.

I do agree that times have moved on from then and I welcome that. Unfortunately, there are some that have gone too far in trying to find offence in every word or action. And the sad thing about that is that the some are usually the metropolitan elite, not the minorities who may sometimes have a genuine gripe.
 
I don't think the term gammon is at all racist, what I find funny is that since the Brexit vote, its the rabid remainers who are the Red faced vein buggers!

'Gammon' in this context is clearly used as a derogatory term based on skin colour - only a fool would argue otherwise - and should be called out just as anyone using the term 'chocolate drop' should be challenged. I think you are possibly misunderstanding what the term "White Privilege" means?

Firstly it definitely doesn't mean you are 'privileged'. though you might be of course... Though you could just as easily be Black and 'privileged'. What it does mean, is that you will not be disadvantaged in life because of your skin colour.

Being white doesn't make you racist either, though being racist does make you racist. As for slavery, I'm not sure anyone would suggest you are 'responsible' for it.

So whilst this appears to have gone down well with our in house racists and RWNJ's, it wasn't really the best or most accurate of opening statements.

Of course the rest of it is equally "These Days you can be thrown in Prison just for saying that you're English" TBF...

Yes, the left got trounced in 2019, but it also provided a better result than the centre or centre left did in 2017.

The narrative that labour need to return to the centre is incredibly useful to the Tories because it actually reduces the pressure on them. You could, from a purely historical level, make a pretty strong argument that right now (in the face of severe economic challenges) the time is actually ripe for some 'left' politics - I don't mean liberal left, identity politics and all that jazz, I mean FDR new deals, post war rebuild type left economics and a modern version of serious industrial stimulus (probably around renewable energy, technology etc etc, as opposed to coal mines and steam trains etc!)

But whilst labour grub about trying to find some kind of imaginary centre ground that doesn't exist, they don't really stand for anything and thus, there's no real prospect of debate about *what we should, as a nation be doing*

And everyone has their knickers in a twist over bullshit on twitter to do with statues and stuff. It's weird. I've not heard one serious debate about economic recovery. I've not really heard labour doing anything that's not reactive. You may loathe John Mcdonnell and his pastel living room, but you could be sure as hell, he'd be making some kind of economic proposal for recovery and whether that's your bag or not, it contributes to the debate. What's Labour's proposal for fixing an economy broken by 16 months of stagnation, inactivity and vast public spending? I haven't got a clue.

I think that's equally problematic to be honest.

A simple example of this was the total uproar on the internet to the headline "Bacon Banned" and the subtext underneath was that Bacon had been banned in the UK in order to appease Muslims. Now let's face it, even the thickest racists on the planet ought to be able to work out that it is rather unlikely that Bacon had, in fact, been banned, yet still we had the ignorant fuckers up in arms about it.

The whole post is just riddled with ignorance and absolute nonsense....

That doesn't mean, that there aren't some valid concerns that we might reasonably hold in regard to issues surrounding race, religion, sexuality, gender etc... But lack of understanding, ignorance and the proliferation of the sort of shyte contained in that post doesn't do anything at all to advance the situation or make things better.

Just because we can recognise that some people are advantaged or disadvantaged in life does not mean we can't also recognise or apprciate personal achievement. You might consider his post shit, ignorant etc, and some of it was no doubt tongue in cheek, but in the last few years, particularly the last couple, things have changed significantly, and not all for the better. I feel unable to say anything without thinking carefully first, am I upsetting someone, possibly, but I’m not sure, will I be in trouble, possibly, but I’m not sure. If I say I don’t see the point in taking the knee, or I don’t quite get all the gay pride stuff pushed in my face the whole time, or I just don’t understand gender neutral etc, I’ll be castigated because I’m supposed to comply with current trends. Frankly, I’m glad I’m of an age where it won’t matter much longer
