So my flights to Vienna have been rescheduled and do not suit my needs now šŸ„“

Anyway rather than sulk at home Iā€™m off to Dublin on Tuesday instead for a couple of days.

Any must see sights or recommendations ? Never been before.
Thanks in advance šŸ‘

Never been on the bucket list so look forward to this thread and if anyone suggests that shite Guinness they can forget it.šŸ¤£

Never been, but son was at Uni in Belfast and visited Uni mates there regularly. He said it was brilliant, but a bit expensive in the touristy bits (not unusual, I suppose).
Iā€™ll peck his head, when I see him tomorrow, for you.
Iā€™m into military history, so for me Iā€™d be visiting the sites of the Easter Rebellion, but thatā€™s probably a bit heavy for the casual observer.
Like Belfast, thereā€™s loads of ā€˜traditionalā€™ Irish music bars in the city centre, but my lad always said if you go slightly further afield you find the bars that are putting on the shows for themselves, as opposed to being a tourist attraction.
Have a great time.

Think the bus tour is decent, there's also one that takes you into the hills just outside Dublin. Also did the Dart [train] which takes you to Bray -seaside resort in the south and Howth to the north which is very pretty. You can do both ways easily. So go to one and then just get a later train back to the other and then one back to the centre.

I loved Belfast and Northern Ireland amazing place to visit.

Thanks Johnno, appreciated as always šŸ‘Œ

Cheers 20ā€™s. The bus tour does look good šŸ‘Œ

Jamesons tour is worth it, especially if you 'volunteer' for the tasting test.

Book of Kells at the Uni, Trinity College

Oldest Pub in Dublin - The Brazen Head

Have a coffee and cake at Bewleys, Grafton Street

Guinness Storehouse is definitely worth a visit, for the history and the view of Dublin from the top

The Comedy Club near to O'Connell Bridge

Get on the Dart railway and nip to Bray or Howth for the morning

Its a great city and very walkable.

Its a pretty safe city LaLa, can be a bit expensive, but very welcoming. There's a pub just off Grafton St (city centre), its name escapes me where The Commitments was filmed and there is a bronze statue of Phil Lynott

If itā€™s on and you fancy being a true tourist, the Riverdance show is always good.

Temple bar of course. Irish music and a drink or ten.
I stayed at Bonoā€™s hotel The Clarence in Temple Bar (think heā€™s still involved?) last time I was there and breakfast was epic. Lovely hotel for a coffee or cocktails later?

Just remembered. The Morgan hotel on Temple-bar is great in early evening too to grab a drink and hang out. Itā€™s a cocktail bar so not the same as the pubs further down the road but depends what sort of night you want. (Dressed up or casual?)

A few years back, wife bought us four nights in Belfast for my birthday. We had a great time.

Been a few times and just tend to stay in the pub :) . . . some of the best pubs in the world though.

From memory the best are Kehoes, The Palace, McDaids, O'Donoghues

Thinking of military history there is a fascinating tour of the GPO in Oā€™Connell Street depicting its role in the Easter Rising.

It's ok but tbh not a patch on Vienna.

Bratislava just an hour away from Vienna if you want to hit another city/country while there.

I looked at Bratislava a week or 2 ago Tommy. The architecture looks stunning and it seems very inexpensive to stay in good accommodation.

Itā€˜s on the list šŸ‘Œ

The bus tour is good and there is a point you can hop off cross the Liffey and pick up a different route or redo part of the same tour, but you may find the guide could be very anti British in their ā€œsupport commentaryā€ ( one of ours was to the point we walked off and crossed the bridge in disgust).
Trinity College and the Book of Kells definitely worth a guided tour and Christ Church and St.Patrick Cathedrals worth a visit and surprisingly neither are Catholic.I thought weā€™d walked into Mass in the latter only to be informed it was an Anglican service.
There is obviously the Guinness Tour but as the other half doesnā€™t drink alcohol there seemed no point and in any case we were only there for a cruise stop, though it was a proper full day.
Nice city which we might go back to for a proper stay over one day.

Great city and a great country too. Wish I had spent more time in Ireland really, so off to Belfast and the Antrim coast in May.
We did a walking tour, and the bus tour in Dublin. Both worthwhile.

Book of Kells and great pubs. Otherwise, I didn't find Dublin that interesting. I'm sure you'll have a good time there.

I lived in Dublin for a while and played football there. A completely mad city with an amazing history. The Guinness Tour is a must for visitors. And, of course, Temple Bar for a late night on the tiles. I'm off to Ireland myself on Wednesday. Have a great time.

If you're staying in the city, then do an afternoon pub crawl across the Liffey around by the Post office and towards Parnell Road....some great pubs
Lunch at the Guinness storehouse is expensive but well worth it, if you can get in
Take the Dart out to Howth for an afternoon....great food, decent pubs and some great scenery......only 40 mins away
My own favourite is Clontarf.....and the walk out to the Virgin Mary statue that's in Dublin bay...then back to Dollymount for tea and more drinking..
Sinnotts bar which is under the shopping centre just at the top of Grafton street is great for food and people watching
Baggott street is worth a wander down....loads of little pubs and restaurants....

The best visit we had was to the National Museum of Ireland located on Kildare Street. The craftsmanship of the Bronze Age gold work and Celtic metalwork from the ā€œDark Agesā€ is stunning and could not be bettered today. Their collection is better than the British Museum, imho. And itā€™s free admission too.

The Tara Brooch, used to pin a cloak together, was made in the 8th Century, dated 710 to 750 AD.

A big group of us lasses went and of course the well known temple bar and all the bars on that street are great. Most have them have live singers on. We all had a blast. A few of the girls did the guiness tour and enjoyed it

I asked my lad if he had any recommendations for you, Karen, and he just said ā€œIs she going on a pub crawl?ā€
Sorry, I should have known better.

Book of Kells at the Uni- a MUST.

Howth is really nice, a couple of really good restaurants there. Odd fact The Blossoms, Ansdell had a painting of Howth in the men's bogs. Not me Guv.

JonnieFox's pub outside Dublin, but is a good night. I think they run a bus from hotels there and back.

But you are in Dublin, no need to travel out unless you're there for a week.

Have fun.

Perhaps I'll think better of posting this, but...........

We stayed at a place called the Aberdeen Lodge in Ballsbridge- very leafy and grand. We were a little late last morning, taxi to the airport was booked for 9am so I checked out, Mrs ordered our breakfast which we asked for quickly. Breakfast arrived 5 mins later. part way in, Chambermaid comes in to the dining room and shouts 'Room No 7, who's in room No 7' it was us so I responded, she then dangled a pair of underpants around her ear, as if to say who owns these. They weren't mine, not my boxer style, which begged the question or whether they were trapped between sheets and the bed wasn't changed? Euw. People stared.

If that wasn't bad enough, we got in the taxi and all started well, 'have ye had a grand time...' etc then a programme came on the radio about the Michael Collins film and the driver excuses himself to listen. Head shakes, were followed by tuts, then mutterings and soon after ranting about the history of it all. I tried to rationalise with him, but eventually he started to blame us (English) in a pro English way. All this had been building for the last 20 mins of the ride and it got to the point we saw a couple walking and pretended they were friends and got out about 500m short of the terminal.

I remember nothing of the rest of the day.

That bar is called Bruxelles on Harry Street. There was a former poster from here called 80s Casual, top lad by all accounts. Used to drink in there a lot.

Dublin is only just recently back to normal in the last few weeks following very strict restrictions on pubs restaurants and the hospitality sector. It's still finding its feet.
